By the way.. I thought I would add:

Tammy's demo here is what a true professional's "Rough Demos" sound like. If your demos aren't as good or better than this, then you're not being very competitive. Sure, not everyone sings as good as her, but this is a quick, last second, simple demo recording. If Tammy had another day, it would be twice as well done. She's a brilliant writer and singer, BUT she's still just another indie songwriter trying to find opportunities. So if you aren't equalling or doing better than she is, you really have a lot of work to do. If SHE can't get a deal or a song cut by someone else, how would you if you're not competitive?

Wow! "Dreams do come true" is really really good! Of the songs I have heard a few are really bad -- production-wise and in songcraft too. Most songs that have decent production values are not that memorable. This one is definitely cream of the crop.

Another very good song is by someone called kelly corsino called "tonight" you can listen to it here:

The level of the competition is turning out to be a lot higher than I thought it would be... but that is a good thing.

Yes this song has definately got the right musical mix and "feel" for AI...it would be along the lines of what they normally are looking for...so i hope it gets a chance...the only downside is ...the other songs $songwriters...obviously Tamera is a gifted and talented songwriter,in the respect this was a quick turnaround write&demo...but there definately will be plenty other talented writers..and some perhaps, may be in the "in-crowd"...perhaps nudged towards this competition...with other songs in a similar vein lying on the back burner...anyway back to Tammy's song...it lends itself to the key change...and also i can hear a clapping choir singing along to the hook...
with a "feel good" ending, and of course...production wise, this could take it to a different level....BUT...and i hope for Tammy's sake it aint a big BUT...will it get past the 30 sec stage...it is in the lap of the Gods...but what i have heard so far...this one definately deserves a crack..goodluck..Terry Moore

I haven't talked to Tammy other than an email exchange but I really do think this song has a shot. I wish she had had a little more time to get comfortable with this melody and singing it. I think it could be a Disney movie song. She has several other songs that are even better than this, but none as well suited for AI. I am really proud of her writing this and getting it to this point so quickly. Maybe this will spark industry folks to look at her other work. She's won for Best Contemporary Christian Album 2 times and best CC song 2 times as well as Songwriter of the Year in our JPF awards against world class talent. She's also one of our Awards screeners and in my opinion is the best screener we've worked with by far. She has a great ear for music and great instincts about what works and what doesn't. She hasn't had a lot of new stuff since she won Album of the Year, but this I hope is the start of another great run of music.

The year she won those big awards she performed a new song at a Pre-Awards showcase we did. There was a successful film screenwriter in the room and he was blown away be her song and wanted to use it in a Disney project he was working on. He's the guy who wrote that movie Mystery Alaska I think (When Tammy logs on she can confirm that.. I might have the wrong movie). She just knows how to construct a song that sticks with you. The big power ballads.

Hi everyone,
I'm new here - found the board when looking for others who had submitted to the AI contest.
I think it's pretty awesome how their is such a variety of songs from people. In a way, I wish AI would post all of the songs (not that I'd ever get to listen to every single one) but it would still be great to go through the various entries and see what kinds of songs are being created out there.
I'm new to this board, but look forward to spending time here (avoiding work, of course).
I threw my hat into the contest ring as well.
I had some serious percussion/tempo problems in the beginning, but I didn't find out about the contest until April 15, so...it was the best I had.
I am planning to continue on it after the contest, so any feedback would be really wonderful. Thanks so much everyone!

Yeah its a slushy, mushy, sugary WOMAN'S big ballad that makes me want to push my fingers down my throat. Just exactly what the judges are looking for. Its a winner. It is very well produced for a "rough demo" written and done in a hurry. Lessons should be learned. Obviously it is not to my macho man "Rock" tastes but I recognise talent when I see it even with songs that are not really my cup of tea. If I were to write an AI song to order it would be along those lines. Go for it "Talented Tammy" you would have my vote if I lived in the States. LOL JIM

I'm not sure we can stake any claim on probability. One of the notions put forth is that 'Idol is approaching the public to find a tune that will get more spins on the radio. Although previous albums sales have all topped the charts, radio play has been disproportionately low.

My reasoning is, as pop tunes they were great, I loved all the previous 'Idol championship songs. But most folks might agree they fall into the "guilty pleasure" category; you might crank it and sing along in your car but the volume creeps down when you're at the stop-light.

I say this to temper our expectations of what we might consider as a serious contender for the contest. I bumped into this idea after we submitted our song. In retrospect, I might have composed two - one like our submission and another a bit more edgy but true to the call out. I'd say it's a wide-open field.

I am looking for anyone who can tell me what sort of confirmation you received once you had uploaded your songs and other info to the AI site. I had a problem with entering my payment information, website indicated technical difficulties, then site expired. It was 12pm pacific time so I don't know if I got in. Any confirmation received from anyone else who entered?

Please let me know. I am very anxious to know if my song is even being considered.

This is an amatuer songwriting contest. They aren't expecting professional "rough demos" from the majority of people. While I was reading through the helpful hints they had for songwriting, they said that a piano or guitar would be sufficient for them to hear the song.

Speaking for myself, I am an aspiring songwriter, so my demos aren't going to be studio quality rough recordings. Just because some of us do not have a studio and don't add strings and/or drums to the mix (or aren't quality singers) does not mean we aren't being competitive or putting our best foot forward. I think they are more interested in lyrics, great melody, and whether or not the song is memorable.

I'm sure they have their work cut out for them. Most of the songs I've heard are good. I would have a hard time choosing.

Tammy,
After Hearing your song THANKS to Brian I totally agree it's a great song and has a very memorable hook and melody.
I have worked for WED ( Disney ) and it definately has that Disney sound! Very impressive and an excellent demo considering the tight time constraint. If Walt was still alive he'd would sign you himself! Good Job!! If this song is not picked as a Top 20 contender I will be very surprised since it crosses all age boundries.

Lifesong,

In a perfect world, songs would get picked on the songwriting alone. But the real world is far from perfect or even fair. Years and decades ago, it was true that industry folks could "hear past" a bad demo of a good song. That's not the case anymore and the reason is that technology is such that people can record demos with the quality of Tammy's easily in their bedroom. In fact, they can do a lot more than that. The band Fisher has had multiple Superbowl Ads and some of the most repeated backing songs to ad campaigns in history. They literally record it all in their bedroom. The point is that for a serious professional, it's easy to find someone to record quality demos. And there's SO MANY great songs out there that an easy tie breaker is the quality of the demo. AI will receive a lot of songs that are good enough. We've heard at least 1 hear already. When they post them, the public will vote. And just as the industry doesn't have to bother "hearing past" a bad recording, the general public simply WON'T hear past it. And that's the people you'd have to impress to get their votes. If there's 200 songs that have what they are looking for, then why wouldn't they pick 20 of them with great demos? The answer is, they wouldn't. And industry folks are the same way. Exceptions? If you happen to match the specific ad slogan or key words that an advertiser wants.. or you are an established hit writer with a long track record, the they might be interested enough to deal with a bad demo. Do you really want to finally get to the edge of the breakthrough of a lifetime only to lose in a tiebreaker because someone else has a better demo? If you think it wouldn't happen, you're fooling yourself. And if your "hit song" isn't worth spending 150 bucks to get a minimally acceptable quality vocal/instrument demo from someone competent, then I don't really think anyone owes it more respect than you're willing to give it yourself.

But feel fee to prove me wrong and come back here and show me the example.

Brian

I don't believe it's an amature contest. Avril and Elton could have submissions. A&R reps will pick the top-20, public picks the winner.

Brian,
I made mine with garageband, a midi cord to my piano, a $100 microphone, and in the comfort of my office/music room =). I'm trying to stick up for those who have really "rough" recordings. They did say that a piano or guitar in the background would be plenty.

To tatrix-I've listened to your song before and think that it is great. It has a good pop feel that I know I could hear on the radio.

Here is one of my song submissions

The Tammi tune hits the subject perfectly for AI I would be shocked if it does not hit top 20.

"song contests always say production doesn't matter"
but it does

It's great if you are writing songs for your pleasure
but it you want to compete for cuts
you're competing against pros and your songs and production need to sound like they were written by a pro

it doesn't cost much to get a good piano vocal or guitar vocal

does them for $150

Speaking for myself, I am an aspiring songwriter, so my demos aren't going to be studio quality rough recordings. Just because some of us do not have a studio and don't add strings and/or drums to the mix (or aren't quality singers) does not mean we aren't being competitive or putting our best foot forward. I think they are more interested in lyrics, great melody, and whether or not the song is memorable.

I'm sure they have their work cut out for them. Most of the songs I've heard are good. I would have a hard time choosing.

Of course Tammy could do a studio version of this and sound as good as any of the AI folks. The lyrics are what you expect, and the main theme about dreams isn't anything original, but yet it still works. It has a Disney-esque quality to it which they typically look for in the winners song so that it appeals to all family members from little girls to little old Grandmas. We played it here for some folks and after it was over they were singing the chorus melody which is a good sign. There's 2 lines that need melodic changes, (which Tammy knows about) but the fact that she conceived of this and wrote it in a day and recorded it while still trying to finish writing it on a deadline is pretty impressive. It's a smooth and polished early song demo that's right on target for the opportunity. Not too complicated.. not unpredictable but it still works anyway.

She's a brilliant writer and singer, BUT she's still just another indie songwriter trying to find opportunities. So if you aren't equalling or doing better than she is, you really have a lot of work to do. If SHE can't get a deal or a song cut by someone else, how would you if you're not competitive?

Hey...My son entered a song....I believe the winner is either Ms.Dolittle or Jordan Sparks....his song is probably not geared towards a female....imho...a guy song......but I think you should "shoot" for the top 20....because it will be great exsposure for sure....and maybe you can gain you a "cut" somewhere....here's a link to his site....the song produced by Substudio is called

Hi everyone,
Since I'm still working on my submission for other contests, etc. I would surely love any feedback you could provide.
I appreciate what other people are saying about songs here, so I'm sure you would have some valuable things to say for me.
Thanks!

Hi Guys! Thanks so much for your encouragement. Of course I am the worlds worst critic so I am sitting here beating myself up for not taking the time to fix the two hurried lines in the song. I wanted to bring on live string players and do the thing up right. I was on a limited budget. I just had the producer who played piano, synth strings and my on the vocal. It took a better part of the day plus a long lunch break. It cost me $675.00 for that basic demo. I was on a budget and he has to get back to someone elses project immediately that I had interupted. I was just grateful to get the time I did. Regardless if I make it in there or not, I am so happy that I found some mojo to write again. I am back at the piano and am inspired to try my hand at a few more and honestly it has been 5 years since I have really written a word much less finished anything.

Here are the full lyrics

DREAMS DO COME TRUE

So far from home
But I'm not afraid
To walk this road
That brought me to this place

Where I can fly
High above the storms below
And all my dreams
Are closer than they've been before

CHORUS
Dreams do come true
I picked a star from the sky
And named it after you
You always believed in me
Love carried me through
Deep in my heart I believe
Dreams do come true

I can't explain
What's in my soul
And I won't hide
What you need to know

You stood by me
And I'm thankful for the way
You made me shine
That's why I'm standing here today

Chorus

Bridge
Through all the years
I have never let go
Wishing and hoping
One day I would know

Chorus

Does anyone have any suggestions for my hurried line "I am thankful for the way"? Maybe a shorter way to say it? Also the line "you make me shine". I want to say some thing to that context but not in a conceited way.

I was really challenged to write this song in a humble but happy way. I tried to put myself in their position. I asked myself, "What would it be like standing on the stage ready to sing a final song, confetti falling and all to millions of people who had selected me to be the American idol."? I had to get in that frame of mind. Of course it was my dream at one time too. But reality hits when you are 42. I will never be the American idol. I will be lucky to sneak in the songwriting door one of these days. That is what I am shooting for. But what would it feel like? It would be so overwelmingly incredible. The person who wins that will never be the same.

I went back to all the winning songs, checked out the titles and lyrics. Of course "A moment like this" is awesome and wins hands down for a hit song. But I didn't think the others were all that strong. I think plenty of us can write just as well as they did. I think alot of us here at JPF can do that. I will just lay it out there and and say "Do I make you proud" That Taylor Hicks sang really did not move me. I was shocked that they came up with that for him. In fact I could tell he hated the song when he had to sing it. I felt extremely bad for him the night he won. From what I heard he didn't even put that on his album. We don't want that to happen again. I hope whoever wins, will enjoy and love the song chosen for them. The past songs were simple in many ways. When you write commercial you can't get complicated. Most the time it can't be too much of a story, like country often does and some other genres. You have a short time to deliver a clever thought and make it stick. It has to be singable and memorable. The more simple the better. Often time the melodic line is the hit of the song, not necessarily the lyrics. Like Brian said, if you have company over, test a song out with them. See if they sing it when it is over. Or catch them humming the hook line later in the evening. I've done that before and it is cool when it works. One time friends did that to something I had played them and I just looked the other way and smiled. (It was just what I needed to know) I don't know if any of this is helpful. I am not a songwriting expert, but I have been to tons of seminars and sat in on alot of Nashville sessions. I think the biggest things for me is that I must have listened to millions of songs since I was a baby. I was raised around music and I just listen to all the songs off the radio and see what they are doing that really works. I think it's got to be catchy. And some advice that one well known songwriter gave me that still has stuck with me, is "you have to learn the songwriting rules and structure before you are free to break them."

Have a super day! Thanks!

Tammy

P.S. Now I am going to go listen to some of your songs. Good Luck to everyone! Never stop writing!!

Hi Tatrix
Great link for anybody who wants to hear the opposition or add to the long list of hopefuls. I am not going to listen to them as even the titles of most want me to throw my fingers down my throat. There was a JPF thread advising what type of song AI was looking for and most of the entries must have read it as the titles are virtually identical. One of the comments at bottom of link SUMS UP THE WHOLE THING it is worth a look.

Big Jim you live in UK
you can't enter the contest,
you wrote about where you want to put your fingers earlier.

The challenge dangles a wonderful carrot and is asking writers to submit songs that:

1) are written to be sung by the winner of American Idol in the finale show,

2) feels like a fitting end to the series

3) has powerful melodic and emotional hook

4) reflect the emotional journey of contestants

5) makes people want to dance sing or even cry

6) connects with the American Public
has a meaningful lyric that connects with the AI audience
by the way lyrics and music must be accessable and appealing to the audience

it's asking writers to create a product for the listeners

there are writers who only write ME songs and

there are also writers who write songs for their fan base

Tammy...After reading your post i went back and listened again to your song ..a few times,i may add...just to get the "feel of it"...hindsight is a great thing for all of us Songwriters..my favourite words are "if only"..Don't beat yourself up over it it is done and it is out there...and there is nothing major that really needs to be fixed..it just needs streamlining...ie..it needs to flow better..it is rushed here and there...but if you see past these little concerns underneath lies a gem of a song...i just hope they let it run to the "hook"...that is where the song takes off in my humble opinion..the rest can be quite easily sorted....concerning your request for an alternative lyric for those two lines you mentioned...i jumped into the flow of the song...you could perhaps try this line..

You Stood by Me
Showed Me The Way
You Made Me Climb
That's Why I'm Standing Here Today.

Good Luck Terry Moore...

A good deal of what you say is true. But to say that only one song posted here is good is not accurate. The songwriter that you refer to has a really nice voice. But the fact is that a songwriter only needs a decent singing voice to present their song. Tammy's song is a good one and especially if Melinda or Jordin become the Idol. But what Tammy's song lacked was the emotion that another song posted here had. I don't remember who the songwriter is but the song is titled "Tonight" and if that song doesn't recieve attention from a major publisher soon, somebody is not listening. And then there is my own submission which I posted earlier. I sang it well enough to sell a great melody and appropriate lyrics (A couple of "Dream" words included)I wish that I would have had a few more hours of production time. Technology is one thing but whether you use an outside studio or your bedroom somebody better be a good producer and arranger. I may be one of the older guys but that guy from "Green Day" who sang that hit song with just an acoustic guitar depended on melody and lyrics to sell that song. And he didn't do a bad job despite a rough vocal.

Hi Phil.....Personally i havent got the time to listen to a lot of the songs..why i picked up on Tammy's ..she has a bit of "form" shall we say as far as Songwriting goes...and i did like her explanation about how, when you write exclusively for this type of contest, you do try to get into the mind of the singer as they go out on that stage..and perform this new song..which has in part, to reflect their journey, the realization of all their ambitions...and this sort of "unreal" scenario actually happening to them...A WHY ME..I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE DONE IT...notwithstanding,the writer has to include all these parts of the jig-saw in the lyric..and also make the melody.....simple,catchy, and memorable...and you really dont have a lot of time with this sort of song to achieve this...ie..no long intro's..that is a death sentence right away..
So with that in mind, i had a listen to your song....it is not bad at all...but i wouldn't think in the context of how i understand it..it wouldn't be the type of song they are looking for..the first criteria i would put to any song for AI when i hear it is this...can i hear the winner of this contest singing this song...and that is the first criteria of the "screeners"..
It is all very well for any given Songwriter to say ..ok ..i think i have a song for AI...BUT..you can't put a square peg in a round hole...it really has to fit the criteria...and be bloody damn good in the process...i dare say there will be plenty great songs entered...and the somgwriter will probably end up dissapointed and scratching their head.&..wondering...it doesnt overnight, make them bad songs...it is very simple..they just do not fit the occasion....if you want to write a song for this contest with an earthly of a chance....you must put yourself in the trembling shoes of the performer....you have to look at the big picture..and write a novel in just over 3 mins...from where they started..to where they stand now...that in my humble opinion is basically it..in a nutshell...but try writing it..

Big Jim,

"Oh... I get it. It's very clever." - Tyler Durden

There's no mistaking why folks dispise the duality of weaving heart strings with purse strings. We could throw darts all day long at any of these submissions (including mine) in regards to that topic - the bull's eye is the size of the hole in the ozone.

Be that as it may, a lot of folks are genuinly entertained by this type of music. That's enough for me whenI listen to pop.

Example?:

My orginals on My Space ( http://www.myspace.com/randytate ) have pulled down maybe 4 spins tops, since being posted to these boards. These are not straightfordward pop tunes.

"Without you" (our Pop tune - http://www.myspace.com/planetsundayproductions
) has been cranking upwards of 100 spins a day... Ho -leeee cow! Pop is fun and people are entertained - that should suffice.

See you at the Grammys - Warmest regards,
Tatrix

Terry, thank you for your comment and for listening to my song. However as the directions said "Don't write with an Idol in mind. Write a good song. We have an experienced production team who can arrange a good song to any Idol's ability or style".
But anyway, my original post was in response to a comment made that there was only one good song posted here. Good Luck to All of Us...

Phil..thanks for your reply..i wasn't really sure if your post was a response to mine ,to be honest...This only my take on this contest..only my personal opinion,i may be miles out...i'm just going by what i have heard on this side of the pond regarding the UK version of "IDOL"..and the type of song that Cowell normally goes for....all the songs i have heard from previous winners all seem to follow a set format...a rags -to-riches type story about them.."feel good" melody..key change..normally something where Cowell can utilise a choir...that is the typical format of those kinda songs..on this side of the pond anyhow...whether he will break the mould..who knows..and by the way, over here he likes his face to be well to the fore in any accompying video...of course he will throw the field open..it is a business venture after all..think of all those ten bucks...but if i was entering it...i would be more inclined to follow the previous winning formats...the downside regarding this type of song is that is has to be a pleasureable listening experience to children&grannies alike...therefore in that context,a lot of genres will suffer...no doubt some great songs will be binned..but on the other hand you never know...perhaps mybe just..some songwriters may get recognition even tho their particular song may not be picked for that contest...it may be passed on to some other artist/producer looking for good material..i would'nt be surprised if that happened...Terry Moore..

Terry, I like what you have been saying. I do agree, there will be some AWESOME songs that won't necessarily be picked for the final show song. ONLY because that wasn't what they were specifically looking for. It DOESN'T mean at all that an industry person won't hear it and say WOW lets contact that person to use this in another area. That is the wonderful thing about this contest. That is why I am not gonna freak about it. Let's just all enjoy the chance. I wrote my song the way I did on purpose. I know alot of Rockers and other genre people probably hate my song. That is ok. You can't please everyone. I wrote for a specific purpose and I did it based on what they used in the past and what I thought might work. It doesn't mean it will at all. Just like if there was a country song writing contest. I would really be in trouble and I am sure I would not fit the bill. What we all can at least try and be supportive of each other. This is directed at all the people who have been following this thread. Terry thank you for your support!

Tammy
P.S. I believe there are many good songs on here. I hope no one thinks there is only one good song. That is not true. Please let's all get along.
P.P.S. Thanks to those leaving me some suggestions on the lines. I will try them out.

I entered two, both downloadable from broadjam (search by title or my name):

1. Real Life, an up-tempo family man song
2. Crescent City, a soulful ode to Nawlins

Good luck to all JPF entrants.

Thanks Tammy...you are very welcome......perhaps some Songwriters will get a life changing experience out of all this..i certainly hope so...and i do sincerely hope they are "unknowns"...that would be a real fillip to all Aspiring songwriters...To each and every one of you on these boards, who entered a song...i wish you the very best of luck....Terry Moore..

I entered 2 songs that would appear seemingly not what they are looking for, however, I gave it a go. I could kick myself for not having the resources (lame, I know) to get a quick demo together for my recently written songs that are still on paper with melodies still in my head or on my answering machine. Pathetic admission, I know.(I write acapella)

Thus, submitted a couple my "heart" said would have to do, with hopes that maybe they would atleast get on the radar screen for some other project. A girl can dream.

I have heard some great entries and am excited to see us all getting excited and coming together on this!

Track 1 and 3.....God'll Get Back/Gonna Remember You
Feel free to offer any critiques. FYI Am very aware that #1 is too long and should probably not have a third verse AND that the lack of appropriate build-up after the bridge is, just that, lacking. Feel free to remind of these things if you are so inclined!

Three AI submissions that stand out for me, for what it is worth, are Tatrix's, Finest Hour by Mother (?) and the LauraVFamily.
Oh,and I also like the Zane guys submission. The gal has a cool voice too-(side note)

Keep liven the dream.

Thanks Stephanie for the mention.

What's funny is I was just listening to your tunes and clicked back to this board to find your post.

Top shelf stuff by the way. You've obviously spent time developing your craft.

Don't worry if you feel your songs don't fit neatly into Idol's traditional mold. The contest is a potential sign they're looking for a change anyway. "God'll Get Back..." hits the Idol mark IMHO anyway.

Thanks for the feedback Tatrix! It is interesting that you commented that God'll Get Back fits the IDOL imho. However, like you said, maybe it is mold breaking time. That is my secret wish of course!!

Take Care and keep your hopes alive that you will be in that top 20. At the current moment, I would post a vote for your entry, for sure!

Hi All
Yes I live in the UK. I would not enter even if I could but I am still entitled to my opinions. As I stated before I am not a big fan of this genre of disposable mushy contrived ballads. They make me FEEL SICK. However as a fellow JPF member I wish all who have enterd luck.
Personally I am of the opinion that the winning song was picked before the comp was announced. I think Mr S.C has a "ringer or two in there. It will be interesting to see just what links the winner has with the organisation. I suspect a close one.
S.C is in a win win win situation. He has all the 10$ in the bank plus all the cash from the phone votes. He selects the final 20 and has the right to add to it or delete any other song he chooses. He does not have to prove that all songs have been judged or even listened to. He does not have any independant adjudicators scrutinising/announcing the result of the votes. In theory he can announce any winner he likes and nobody outside the organisation will be any the wiser. Regardless of all that the winning song will be a huge seller however bad it is.
I already spoke about certain Brits having a fall out with his similar UK X factor program for "secret reasons" and suspect that it might have something to do with the issues I have raised. If the .... hits the fan then Mr. Cowell could be in serious trouble.
There is to be a program screened this coming week in the UK exposing the scams and cheating that goes on with premium rate phone lines used for voting and entering TV comps. It should make interesting viewing. Will let you know details after I watch it.

Hey Ande -
I entered a song called "While You've Got the Chance" ... It isn't on my soundclick site yet. Not sure it the theme is spot on ... but then again.. it could be crazy While not about catching the dream... it sings of living and loving...NOW ...
I am with Tammy... I figured it was a no-brainer to submit - who knows who may listen.
Good luck to all who submitted
Joanne
