http://www.rpmchallenge.com/"This is the challenge: record an album in 28 days, just because you can. That’s 10 songs or 35 minutes of original material recorded during the month of February. Go ahead… put it to tape. It’s a little like National Novel Writing Month, (NaNoWriMo.org) where writers challenge each other to write 1,700 words a day for 30 days, or the great folks over at February Album Writing Month (fawm.org), who encourage artists to write 14 new songs in February. Maybe they don’t have “Grapes of Wrath” or “Abbey Road” at the end of the month, or maybe they do—but that’s not the point. The point is they get busy and stop waiting around for the muse to appear. Get the gears moving. Do something. You can’t write 1,700 words a day and not get better. Don't wait for inspiration - taking action puts you in a position to get inspired. You'll stumble across ideas you would have never come up with otherwise, and maybe only because you were trying to meet a day’s quota of (song)writing. Show up and get something done, and invest in yourself and each other."

Ask Harriet Ames how long it took to record her cd "Teach Me to Fly.' http://cdbaby.com/cd/amesOr check out Lesley Schatz on Bear Family Records http://www.bear-family.de/tabel1/product/bcd15674_e.htmTwo thirds of Lesley's album "Walls Hearts and Heroes" were recorded in one day, with a full band (drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel, piano and back up vocals), direct to DAT, mixed and mastered. Les' three folk albums, "Brave Wolf" "Hello Stranger" and "Banjo Pickin' Gal" were recorded and mixed in three weeks...60 songs, and they get good reviews all over the world. It can be done. I love this challenge. Cutting an album on a deadline, just like doing anything on a deadline, is good for your art and craft. Like Vikki says, "Don't wait for inspiration." Sometimes inspiration needs nothing more than a good swift kick. Good post, Vikki.

Record an Album in 28 days. Probably as long as the songs are already selected and ready to go. Write 14 new songs in one month. Do they have to be good? I only wrote one song in 2005 and none in 2006. To be sure I wasn't trying as I have a pretty good catalog already. Maybe I will pick up the Guitar this year and write something. Maybe I will re-visit some of my songs and see about re-writes.

Hi Vicki,
This is a great idea too. When I saw the 'write (is it 28 songs?) in February', I decided to change that to record 14 songs in February. I am recording challenged and that is what I need to start doing. I am only going to do work tracks, plan and practice it 1 day, record the next. May have to sign up for this next February. If I record more than 14 songs all the better.

Talk to Sub about us doing THIS! Over 40 hours for just one song! I did that before though,,,,but demos really, not master quality records. Was also inspired. Beatles recorded their first full album in ONE WORK DAY. Broke for lunch too, and went to their cafeteria! Tight performances as well. One day! 12 songs! Pressure of them too, to do well at the big label.

ok - extra credit for those that write the songs too in that time frame. Not just record ones you've rehearsed over and over in the caverns.

Vondelle,
Don't forget, you've got five tracks credit. Email work recordings soon and I can get them back before the 20th.

Mike,
I thought that might be like the restaurant gift cards I forget I have and they expire...
Okay. Will send work recordings soon. Thank you.

The offer expires when I do.... even after You did keep the plastic card with the magnetic swipe, didn't you? Actually, I'd need them by Tuesday at the latest to get them back by the 20th (got a road trip in the middle of that). But...anytime.

Terrific idea. I have limited "home studio time" (6-7 hrs a week max) and my kids are out of school for a week in February (I know, it's weird). BUT I'm in for doing as much as I can in the time I have to work with! Writing songs--that I can do--the house doesn't have to be quiet. I'll keep this in mind for next year too. I hope to be booking studio time by then. This year is "practice."

Great idea...but, do to unexpected circumstances that are taking up huge amounts of my energy, I will have to pass on it for now...will try to do it next time! Thanks for the link...it sounds like a very cool organization.

Musica,
My throat is much better now. I've actually written 4 new songs, 2 already completed, should have the other 2 done this weekend! I seem to have hit a stride, it feels good!

I haven't been able to record anything for the RPM yet, as my new audio computer just arrived and I'm just getting it set -up. However, I have been writing songs for FAWM, I have 4 complete, 2 lyrics with music I'm working on, and another piece in development.

It's cool to see everybody GO on this! I have to pretty much do a book in a month in March. So I'm out for the count this year--but I'll be producing SOMETHING artistic, and my book fans will be very very happy that I've finally finished it (when it's done)! Linda

However, I am on song #8 for the february Album writing month challenge (write 14 songs in 28 days)..
good luck on the book writing, Linda!

Thank you, Vikki & Musica!
As for me--master quality at home is out of my ballpark too. I might get to "demo quality" after some time and practice, but master stuff will still need a studio.
Good for you, Vikki! Almost done, musica, that must feel good!

I've posted one of my new songs for the RPM challenge on their site, it's called 'Knock it Off'. Man, talking about rushing everything to get this done!!! Sorry for the pitchy-ness.
I'm still pushing, almost there!

I completed it at 3:30am, Feb. 28!! Very cool journey, but I'm catching up on sleep now, and eventually must get my studio back into some type of 'normal' working order. It is a total mess!! I posted four of the songs on my myspace site.
