LL,
I tried to arrange a press conference, but I just couldn't get it organized quickly enough. And I do admire the manner in which you so proudly but humbly accept this pinnacle of rhyming achievements. It was my pleasure to have bestowed it upon you. I am sure you will wear with the pride and enthusiasm it merits.
And, BTW, it is still my favorite of all the rhymes I have seen offered. Merry Chrsitmas, Lynn. Hope 2007 is your best ever.

Buzz,
Your last statement is so true...don't try to rhyme with orange! And yes, I agree as well, if it enhances the line and adds to the song overall, it's a good fit.
As far as "adorned" is concerned, I think it is a perfectly acceptable word usage. And I do not think it is too antiquated and is adequately conversational. It works fro me, at least.
Merry Christmas and hope you have a great New Year.

Alan, just wan't to let you know that I beat myself up the other night trying to find a rhyme for orange. Didn't get to sleep till 2AM. I tried compound words and two word rhymes. Nothing stuck to the wall.Orange sucks. I've got other rhymes to worry about. Orange can take a hike. I won't drink orange juice anymore. At least I can think of a rhyme for V8.

Guy, I think your right. Stone-inge and orange would rhyme if it were in a song by Herman's Hermits. But I don't think Grandpa Jones or Uncle Dave Macon could get away with it.

Alan Hi Alan, Thanks for the input on "adorned." One never knows what kind feedback one will get when it comes down to opinion. IMO, if a word is used enough and/or one has a reasonable expectation that most people have been exposed to it enough in life, it should pass muster as being conversational. Anyway, I'm sure I'll use orange in a lyric somewhere along the way but it most likely won't be used as a rhyming word. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. Van

Linda,
Hey, you're even prettier than I had imagined Ya know, tis avatar option is pretty nice. Those who choose to do so, as you did, can post with a picture so we can see what we all look like. But, for some of us, that may not be a wanted service for the community. I have noticed that since my wife has put my picture on display, we've had fewer critters in the house. At least it serves a purpose other than reminding me that I'm not as young as I used to be. I'll be 60 in March! Yikes!!!

Okay, so you can rhyme something to V8...how about 6 Cylinder? I know...nobody likes a smarta$$!

Okay Ben Willis , First , you tell us you want a one syllable word to rhyme with a two syllable word and you neglect to mention that you want to specify who's going to be singing them . What's going on here? Cough up the cookie Willis Pete:)

Dang You, Ben!!!!
If I recall, you're the one who brought upthis Herman's Hermits stuff. I can't get that Henry The Eighth crap out of my mind. I've benn singing that freakin' song in my head since last night. As soon as I jumped in the shower this morning, yep, I'm humming "I'm Henry The VIIIth I am, Henry The VIIIth I am, I am. I got married to the widow next door, She's been married seven before.......". It's all your fault! Payback for the oranges, huh? Okay, I see how you are...can't let any insidious deed go unpunished!
Best to ya, amyway!

Alan, actually I mean't to say Rex Harrison but I couldn't remember his name at the time.So the next best British accent I could think of was Herman's Hermits. Did'nt mean to cause so much agony. Ben

I can't imagine how you could pronounce carnage to rhyme with orange.
However, I'm amazed that no one here has offered up grunge.
That's about as close as you can get.

Jody,
Thanks for the visit. And you're right...grunge is pretty doggone close. I think grunge and foreign are the closest so far. And, can't imagine anything getting any closer than either of those two. As usual, nice contribution to the thread. Have a great holiday!

I rhymed "torn" with "orange" once in a poem, just to show it could be done. Who was it that rhymed "purple" with "maple syrple"? Ha!
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

LOL. Do not try this at home folks. Roger Miller was a professional: They say roses are red and violets are purple Sugar is sweet and so is maple surple Well I'm the seventh out of seven sons My pappy was a pistol I'm a son of a gun.

Yep, Ben and Graham...that was Roger Miller. We are all familiar with his humo(u)rous songs, such as "Dang Me", "Can't Rollerskate In A Buffalo herd", etc. But, he wrote a lot of other serious songs that were really good ones...such as "Little Green Apples" and "Husbands And Wives". He also wrote the entire score for the Broadway production "Big River". there are a lot of good stories about him writing that score. Too bad he died as young as he did. He was a great talent. Best to all of ya!

When I was ten years old I had a Roger Miller 45 and knew every word of it. The kids at school thought I was crazy when I sang it. See if you remember these glorious rhymes.
My uncle used to love me but she died a chicken aint' chicken till' it's licken' good fried keep on the sunny side my uncle used to love me but she died
Got a letter here this morning it was post marked Omaha it was typed and neatly written offering me a better job better job at higher wages expenses paid and a car but I'm on tv here locally and I can't quit I'm a star

Ben,
Yep, I remember. Of the two you offered here, the second is my favorite. It is from his song "Kansas City Star"...a great song. Although somewhat silly on the surface, the lyrics tell a pretty good tale of of a person realizing who he is and what his life is all about.
If I recall correctly, the chorus goes something like this:
Kansas City Star, that's what I are Yodle, odle latey, you ought to see my car Drive a big ole Cadilac with wire wheels And rhinestones on the spokes I got credit down at the grovery store and my barber tells me jokes I'm the number one attraction on every supermarket parking lot I'm the king of Kansas City, No thanks Omaha, thanks a lot.
I think that's pretty close. Yeah, he was a good one, alright. I've heard Bill Anderson (Whispering Bill) tell outrageously funny stories about when he and Roger Miller shared an apartment in Nashville in the late 1950's. Bill, of course, is very shy, quiet and somewhat serious. Well, you can imagine how Roger exploited that! The band I was playing with back in the early 70's was on the same bill as Bill Anderson. Some of the stories he told had us laughing our butts off. Ah yes...those really, really good ole days! Fabulous memories, indeed! Best to ya, Ben,
Alan

Ya know, I have always tyhought that song is where Billy Joel may have got the idea for Piano Man from. I have several Roger Miller LPs, so know his work pretty well. He was the ace in, and after his time. Graham

Tiz the thing to do in modern country
"I went sky diving" "I went Rocky mount climbing"
I actually try for the near ones rather than the perfect...usually it's a combo of each...

Tom,
Yeah, I think you're right about using both. It would certainly reduce the likelihood of monotony in the rhymes. Plus, the imperfect rhymes often keep the lyric a little more conversational. Plus, they open up a lot more possibilities for telling your story.
Thanks for dropping in with your thoughts. Merry Christmas!

It depends on the effect I'm going for in the song. I agree with what's been said about near-rhymes making a song sound more conversational. I'm more likely to use near-rhyme or non-rhyme when the content of the song is more serious and I want to draw more attention to the story than the craft. I tend to use more perfect OR noticeable rhymes when I want to sound funny or clever, or the genre is more old-timey.
My weirdest rhymes are all in one song. It rhymes gothic with the following: topics, intoxic- (an enjambed line where the "ate" is in the next line), cathartic, misanthropic. It also rhymes parenthetically with peripetetically and contrarian with sesquipedalian.

Hi..and welcome to JPF! Your system seems logical to me. Of course, there are always those exceptions. Would lov e to see the lyrics to the song with those various rhymes you annotated. Sounds interesting!
Hope you enjoy your stay here at JPF...and hope you decided to hang around for a while. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Alan

Alan, I think it was the first Farmaid concert. Roger Miller came out on stage and sang "King Of The Road". The audience sang along. That was shortly befor his death. What a show.

Herbie,
You are much too kind. I will admit that I do strive to be a gentlemen 98% of the time. But, the scholarly part...that could be a discussion with varying points of view! But, I can concede to being reasonably intelligent. I sincerely and humbly thank you for your kind words and truly enjoy our friendship. You are one of the true class acts at JPF. Helen and I are really looking forward to getting together with you and Kim-Char in March. We also hope to have a chabce to say hello to Bob Young, as well.
Happy Channuka!

Ben,
One person can't reasonably keep a thread going by him or herself. So, either the punishment or the enjoyment (depending on how you see it) of this thread has plenty of people to blame!
Record? Heck, the only record I's really like to have is my lyric holding the #1 position on some music chart for longer than any other! Yeah...I could deal with that!
Glad you have enjoyed this thread. I have tried to pick topics that think would appeal to a broad spectrum of JPFers in my threads on this forum. There's nothing like getting everybody else's points of view to compare with your own. Well, at leasdt that's how it goes for me, anyway. Talk atcha later, I'm sure!

Inspiration often comes as a kick in the a$$! Makes me wonder why ihaven't found more inspiration in my life! Oh well...different subject for a different time! And, giess you know that the weight of the entire lyrical world is resting on shoulders as you seek to find the yet undiscovered. I wish you success in every step of the way!
And yeah, ooohhs and aahhhs can go a long way when it comes to filling in for lyrics in need. Good luck on your quest!
