Hi Folks,
I've been talking with some non-US members about coming over to Europe for our first ever Roatrip there. Only a tiny number of Euro members post (and probably less than a small handful will see this post) but for any of you who do, I'd like to hear from you in regard to us doing a Roadtrip tour to your country. We need to learn a lot about how we might best pull this off.
Thanks,
Brian

A friend of mine ran an open mic/songwriter get-together for about a year in Belgium. He combined music with talks from relevant people. It was a steep uphill struggle all the way and he eventually gave it up. Let me know what format you think might work (from your experience), and I'll see if I can see some way of fitting it in here. Michael,
I met a woman from Belgium at the TAXI Road Rally who wants to start a JPF chapter there. She also indicated it's a major struggle to get something as simple as an open mic going and that such things really don't exist there. Why is that do you think?

That might be a deep question. The songwriters don't tend to congregate here for some reason. Like elsewhere, most bands write their own stuff. And the outside writers tend to be self-contained dance production outfits (some pretty impressive). The latter are not interested in the art and craft of songwriting as such (even when the demonstrate the necessary skills). If it's a case of getting together, they prefer to go clubbing. There are some folk musicians and songwriters that had their own open mic, but it eventually folded. So I don't really know the answer, which makes planning a tough one. But the issue is very much on the writer's side rather than a lack of venues or whatever. The only explanantion I can think of is that it's a small country (10 million) that is further split into two large language communities (Flemish/Dutch and French). So any stylistic divides are compounded by a language divide. And there is a lack of awareness about what's happening on eithe side. ------------------ Michael Leahy The Accidental Lyricist http://michael-leahy.indiegroup.com

"Sometimes reaching a goal earlier than planned is a great achievement. It shows you have worked hard, pushed ahead and made it happen. However, sometimes reaching a goal far past your original deadline, long after you wanted to complete it, and after the accolades you might once have gotten for the achievement are over, it is an even greater achievement. This shows you never gave up, due to adversity, deficit, criticism and those little life detours that end many dreams and goals. In many ways, this is a reason for even more pride!" -Brian Austin Whitney
