Attention Austin-area musicians: I'm looking for a willing participant for my digital music panel at South By Southwest! The panel is a discussion about how up-and-coming artists are using the Web and cheap technology (home studios, DIY stuff, email lists, legal filesharing) to develop their careers, DIY-style. I'd prefer a musician, but a label rep or a music journalist would be fine too. The only requirement is that you must be fairly savvy about the Web and the technologies listed above. You don't have to be a computer geek...you just need an opinion or some experience with the stuff listed above and a willingness to talk about how it helps (or hurts!) your music career. Here's the official panel description: "Industry lawsuits. The rise of iTunes. The demise of MP3.com. The return of Napster. DRM and digital distribution. The past year has seen monumental shifts in the way music is created, distributed and sold. But is technology really creating the artist-friendly utopia we all envisioned? Our panel of Web-savvy independent artists discusses the good and bad of being a musician in the Digital Age." The panel happens Tuesday, March 16 at 10am. I'd prefer someone from the Austin area since time is running out to fill the panel slot. Interested? Scott,
I am curious why it has to be a female? How would that be relevant either way? Also, does this panelist then get into SXSW free? If so, I am guessing it will be easy to find someone.

I'd prefer a woman since the panelist I need to replace is a woman and there are already three men on the panel. A lot of the panelists at SXSW are men, so I'm hoping to preserve what little balance I had. This panel is part of SXSW Interactive, which happens several days before the Music festival. It is quite well-attended; panelists will be speaking to an audience immersed in the culture of technology: websites, gaming, wireless tech, filesharing, etc. All panelists get a free registration to SXSW Interactive. However, I had to "upgrade" my comp registration to get in to SXSW Music. ------------------ Scott Andrew and the Walkingbirds Lo-fi DIY acoustic pop Hear it: http://www.scottandrew.com/main/music

Scott,
Email me and I will send you some names of some artists that might be good candidates for you. I am not sure which are going to SXSW, so you might need to email them and ask, but all would be good candidates.

"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
