Howdy, kind folks. I've been recording on ADAT machines for years, and I've grown to love them. I need to push buttons and hold tape in my hands. However... It seems that it's time for me to get with the program, so to speak, and get my PC involved in the game. For software, I'm partial to Logic Audio, but I don't have a sound card that would be up to par for recording. What I would like to do is find some kind of PCI or USB doodad that can accept the optical outs from an ADAT machine and keep all of my tracks separate, & therefore editable. Now: is the ADAT "lightpipe" configuration a proprietary thing, or can any card with an optical 'in' do the job? It seems that what I really want is the "ADAT-Edit" system, but it's been discontinued, and the few bits of it that I've found online are for Win98 only, and I'm running XP. Is there any hope for a fossil like me, or should I just throw in the towel and find some nice Otari reel machine to settle down with? Thanks, folks... ------------------ Shandy Lawson Folk-noir Ballads and Acoustic Brawls http://www.shandylawson.com [This message has been edited by Shandy (edited 01-29-2004).]

Hey Shandy, You might take a gander at the RME line of audio cards. I used to have a Hammerfall 9652, and the sound/stability was outstanding. Here's a link http://www.rme-audio.com/english/hammer/d9636.htm Rob
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not sure... My Songs

Shandy my friend...
Just about any 96k audio card that you get today will have far better recording ability than anything you could get from the ADAT's.
PCI is the best interface for an audio card... The MOTU 2408 has better A/D converters than ADAT, but also have digital connections for Lightpipe and Tascam digital. Among other digital inputs. Also the MOTU 828mkII has ADAT inputs too.
Logic rules! Even the old version for the PC - it's since been discontinued for PC and is now available as Logic Pro only on the Mac. Go computer based and you'll never look back. It's faster, easier, cheaper, and the audio quality is better.

Hey Jody! I knew you'd chime in here. Those MOTUs certainly are sexy, but a wee out of my financial range at the moment. For right now, I need something simple/cheap enough to get my ADAT tracks into the PC for a client/friend of mine so that he can take the tracks to a hard-disc fella for final touches. I might end up with this: http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-EVE-EZ8.html but we'll see. The hammerfall card looks nice, too... However, I have been awakened to the reality that digital is where it's at, and I think I can even bring myself to like it. With the right plugins, maybe I could love it. I'm not a studio for hire per se, but I record quite a few folks from the local scene, as I seem to get a sound that they like, quirky as it may be. So far I do it for beer and tape (or in this case, a sound card) but if I can keep up with the times, maybe I could make a couple bucks. Maybe. Thanks guys! Might see you this summer, Jody... - S

Hey Shandy,
Looks like you and I are on the same page...I've got an ADAT that I'm happy with, record some local folks, and need to start thinking about connecting everything to my laptop, running XP. PLEASE let me know how things work out, and maybe I'll follow your lead! --Mick

I'll second the recommendation for the Hammerfall series. I have the 96/52 Hammerfall with 3 ADAT optical lightpipe ins/outs and am very happy with it. Of course, I use it in conjunction w/ domain converters and send signals from a big board as shown here. http://milesmaxwell.com/gallery/nsn but the card is pretty sweet.

Just an update... I just took delivery of an EMU 1820 package ($399), and though I have absolutely no experience with recording on the PC, I have to say it's pretty slick. It comes with a nice little audio dock, with a couple of those combo input jacks (hi & lo-z) and decent preamps. In all, 18 inputs & 20 outs, analog, S/PDIF, MIDI & ADAT optical. It also comes bundled with Cubase VST, which I'm warming up to-- though it's a bit different in look and function than Logic, which I'm at least a little used to. I'll probably stick with the Cubase (sorry Jody ), because I've been trying to get a patch or update from Emagic to run my old Logic Gold software on win XP for a year and a half with no luck. My only Cubase VST nit so far is that it doesn't come with a printed manual-- just a mountain of PDF files. I'll have to buy a book. Anyway, I'll know better in a few months when I'm into the grit of it, but so far I'd recommend the EMU 1820 package not just for my ADAT-PC connection issue, but for recording in general... thus concludes Shandy's product review. ------------------ Shandy Lawson Folk-noir Ballads and Acoustic Brawls http://www.shandylawson.com
