On a rare occasion, I get to do perc-type stuff with the church band. Last time, I used a rain drum, frame drum, doumbek, didgeridoo and talking drum. I thought it was cool, but they haven't asked me back. :-)
(I'm always on bass or guitar there though)
Typically, if I'm doing a gig, I'll bring along the Turkish doumbek for my percussionist friend to accompany me. Great stuff.

Yes! I have played drum set my whole life, but have more recently gotten into playing djembe - a hand drum that originates from West Africa. I've written several compositions for djembe and percussion, and use it on a lot of my own recordings and in my work with other songwriters. Everyone seems to respond very positively to the djembe! It's brought a whole new dimension to my drumming! And it's a very versatile drum that is accessible to people of all skill levels.
