Anybody ever notice generalities of personalites of different instrumentalist's? For instance, I have alway's related well with bass player's. They seem to be easy going, generally reliable and....different! Guitar players tend to be the "star" in their own mind, and often can't be bothered with trivialities like setting up bookings, helping to load/unload the P.A. etc. Ditto Singers. Drummers I usually relate to next, They tend to be a little more "brash" then bass players, but still usually have 1 1/2 feet on the ground,

Of course these are just generalities, and I have met plenty of people that break the mold, but I still notice similarities in character, Do you?

In case this post sounds like I'm bashing Singers and guitar players, I'm not. (I'm a guitar player). It just seems that certain personalities are drawn to certain instruments. No?

Of late, when I meet bands prior to knowing what they play, I like to figure out who plays what! I'm about 90% on bass players, ditto drums and 75% singer/guitar player. I'm trying to get a fix on djembe players....

It's amazing how many people get it when I say, "I play bass for the glory of it." I guess the supportive role of the bass player is pretty obvious. I used to play guitar. Since I started playing bass, I began speaking more softly and wearing looser pants.

I think egos coincide with higher frequencies.

Actually, here's my take (from personal experience). As a guitarist, you think - am I loud enough? Can they hear me? Do I have a good tone for my solo coming up? etc.


When I play bass, I think - does this work with the song? Am I setting the mood? In sync with the drummer? etc.

as a bassist - you listen to the overall song. As a guitarist, you look in the mirror.

But that's just from my own experience, your mileage may vary.

Heres my personal take if we are talking generalties....I Identify with anyone who has tried to create a band with like musicians successfully..meaning that..Guitar players who are willing to tone it down a bit, bass players who aren't drunks and reliable, and singers who can sing. For myself, I am a guitar player who doesn't like to play loud and I make one heck of a roadie..I finally found a bass player who doesn't drink and so far reliable, another guitar player who doesn't want to cover me up.(even though I have asked him to crank it up a lil), A singer who doesn't set the world on fire but has heart. But I guess if you going to ask about who I relate to most, would be drummers.

You forgot to mention the band member who is also a songwriter. Don't a lot of those fall into the "God's gift to the world" arena?
