Arizona Songwriters Songpitch for October (date to be confirmed)

Nashville Publisher Clay Myers (tentative)

After gaining experience with a number of publishers, Clay Myers’ first big success came in 1989 when he was asked to create and build Starstruck Music for Reba McEntire’s Starstruck Entertainment. (Ten years later the company sold for $16 million dollars.) Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents top level talents, noticed Myers’ Starstruck achievement and tapped him to create a publishing division for them in 1998. In three short years the deal yielded a joint venture with Chrysalis Music and over 40 cuts by major artists.

Myers moved to Still Working Music (SWM) in 2002. The company is owned by Barbara Orbison, the widow of Roy Orbison, who controls the legend’s music and some of his masters. Roy Orbison would have turned 70 in 2006 and a number of special events are being planned including a TV special, a duet album, a commemorative stamp and more. (www.royorbison.com). SWM has an eclectic staff writer roster active in pop, rock and country formats.

TEXAS SONGWRITERS CRUISE - Yeah!

October 8 - 13, 2005 (Saturday-Wednesday)
Set sail from Galveston, Texas, with stops to shop at Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen on Mexico's East Coast.

Texas Songwriters Cruise <http://secure.ifanz.net/clickthru.php?C=453&M=0000005406&L=http://www.txsongwriterscruise.com/> with John and JoAnn Braheny, Jason Blume, and more - from the website:

The 1st Annual Texas Songwriters Cruise is a combination songwriting conference and 5-Day Caribbean vacation rolled into one. The cruise will leave Galveston, Texas on October 8, 2005, aboard the Carnival Cruise Ship Ecstasy with ports of call in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen/Calica in the Eastern Caribbean. The event was created by songwriters for songwriters, with the focused vision of providing something for songwriters at all levels. It will include opportunities to pitch your songs to publishers and music industry professionals, personal career/music consultations with successful music pro's, and sessions by proven hit makers and artist development pro's regarding the business and craft of songwriting. The songwriting faculty will include Jason Blume, who has written album cuts for Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Collin Raye, the Oak Ridge Boys, John Berry, and others. John and Jo Ann Braheny will also attend as faculty members. John co-founded the legendary Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase which provided exposure and encouragement to an impressive list of later-to-be-successful writers/artists including Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, Janis Ian, Warren Zevon, Karla Bonoff, Stephen Bishop, and Diane Warren. John teaches songwriting/music business classes all over the country, including UCLA, Musicians Institute and LA Recording School (Hollywood). Jo Ann Braheny has lectured on Creative Process nationwide as well and has extensive experience in the music industry gained, in part, through stints with Billboard Magazine, CBS Records, Warner Bros, Island Music, ABC-TV, NBC-TV, Dick Clark Productions, and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Of course, you don't have to live in Texas or be a Texan to participate in this event - everyone is welcome!

Please make your reservations ASAP because they've reserved a limited number of cabins and they're going fast!

NSAI TUCSON update…..

Message from Denny:

Dear Songwriters,

Due to personal obligations, I will be unable to host any more NSAI workshops for the remainder of this year. Rather than just cancel the workshops I am extending an invitation for someone else to host the meetings for the rest of 2005.

The only requirement for hosting the meetings is that they be in a "neutral" 3rd party place--meaning they can't be held at an individual's home. I will make arrangements to provide whomever volunteers with all the necessary workshop lesson plans, etc, as well as the e-mail contact list to keep folks up to date on the new workshop time, places & dates.

I hope to be able to resume my role as a more reliable volunteer NSAI coordinator by 2006; however, it is very possible that I may have to end my 5 year run as coordinator of the Tucson NSAI workshops, and am hoping that someone else will be willing and able to keep things going here.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all through the workshops and events we've held, but I don't believe at the present time that I can continue to organize & run them on a consistent basis.

Thank you in advance for your understanding,

Denny Ceizyk
NSAI Tucson Workshop Coordinator

hello board,

I'm new to Phoenix and thought I might experience the Songs in Progress workshop at Gavan's place. I tried to call Gavan, but he'd left for the day. So, I did a mapquest on the address given "8607 N 59th Ave." in Glendale. I drove there only to find that it was an apartment complex. I had no idea where to go. Needless to say, it was a very frustrating experience. Any help for next month would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm sorry that you did not have a good experience. Unfortunately, I have never been to Gavan's workshop so I don't know where it is. I just pass along the information...

There's PLENTY going on in Phoenix...have you ever checked out the New Times? You can find them at any Circle K or most anywhere around town in the FREE paper rack. They come out on Thursdays. It is Phoenix's (and several other major cities) entertainment newspaper.
