This is song I posted awhile back. I located a vocalist and re-mixed it. Any suggestions?

Genre Country

Verse 1
Alarm goes off, I wake up to a song
A sweet refrain of true love that's so strong
It fills my mind with thoughts of me and you
Now I'm ready to face the things that I must do
Verse 2
Allow myself a couple minutes more
Mapping out the squeaks in our old floor
'Cause I don't want to wake you when I leave
Funny how your heart can make you believe
Chorus 1
But that's just my mind, playin' tricks on me
It's so unkind, when I know it can't be
You left long ago, and it brought me to my knees
That's just my mind playin' tricks on me
Solo
Verse 3
I hit the interstate just after 5:00
Get ready for that two hour drive
It's the girls night out, have to improvise
Stop to get some flowers, then I realize
Chorus 2
That that's just my mind, playin' tricks on me
Am I goin' blind, I wipe the tears so I can see
You left long ago, and it brought me to my knees
That's just my mind playin' tricks on me
That's just my broke heart foolin' me

Hey Rob,
Cool song and very nice demo to get your concept across! Towards the end I heard more of your fiddle in the mix. I would have liked to hear that in more places throughout the song. After all, this is a "sad & lonely" kind of song, so a little more weeping fiddle could help bring out those emotions! [Linked Image]

The vocalist is very good on this. I heard a little "gravel" in his throat when he reached for a couple of the highest notes, but it works well for a "street" style performance.

I noticed you didn't mention any credit or name of the vocalist. Is he a personal friend or pro demo singer?

Good tune my friend! [Linked Image]
Michael

Hey Michael,

Thanks for the listen! The fiddle is a sample, and not totally convincing when brought to the fore ground. It's a compromise as my usual fiddle player is currently unavailable. I think you're right though, a little more "country" fiddle would also alighn it more with the genre, it's almost to "pop" now.

The vocalist is a session guy out of L.A. that I hooked up with over the internet. The strangest thing about the "gravel" in his voice that you mentioned, it was just that one note, occuring several times in the song, and was a by product of his busy schedule. Opted to settle for it as sometimes this is even requested from vocalist! I think he has a very noice voice, stellar compared to my own!

Thanks again Michael!

Rob

Rob,

Really nice storyboard you've laid for this song. I think you're a talented writer. I haven't heard the song yet 'cause it's being downloaded as I'm writing. Will listen to it later, and get back to you.

Rob,

Confirmation...you're talented for sure. What a nice song. Agree with Michale...more violins and louder at the end. And what a nice guitar solo...wish I could play like that! Wow! This is a winner. Go all out to get it published. Don't rest till you do.

Hi Rob,
Damn fine acoustic guitar in this tune.....
Nice Ballad....I liked the build in the chorus....rockin' kind of riffs...ya know?

I think the Percussion could get busier during the electric guitar solo....but it's cool as is...

Good hook too man....
Great vox...

Good job man,
Take it easy,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Hey thanks for the listen and comments! I've been looking for a vocalist for awhile to do my demo's. This guy's a pop tenor who doesn't connect with country that much, but I think it work's with this song anyway. Will look at the drums in the chorus again....might be a good idea!

This is wonderful Rob,
I think the highest praise I can give you is that the song distracts me. I see you are asking for sugesstions about possible improvements to the mix. And so I've listened 5-6 times. And everytime I get so caught up in the words, music, singing, the whole vibe to this that I can't concentrate enough to hear anything I'd change.
(must mean I like it as is) AND I DO!!!!

Ha done it again Rob another cracker. I love it all but being an old rocker LOL I flipped on the lead Guitar, absolute magic.
On the mix Rob at 1.05 it sounds as though there is keyboard coming in (Organ?), but in any case it gets a little bit too busy for me until that lead guitar comes in.
I think it needs thinning out just a little to give the instruments more definition. I love the acoustic guitar so that get's my vote to stay in, Bass just right, Drums Great, Lead Guitar Magic anything else I think is over kill.Singer is great so he can stay LOL Could be just me though Rob.
Third time around and here comes that lead Guitar, it blows what little brain I have left, it's also very Brian May in feel. Some great playing Rob.

Hey Harriet,

Wow, that is high praise! Thank you so very much!

Gerry! Thank you my friend! That thing you can't quite heae is a sampled fiddle. If I brought it up in the mix any more, it stuck out like a sore thumb! Might just nix it as you say!

Rob

Rob,

I wouldn't nix the fiddle, I really liked it. Just get a real fiddler to put in the part and use it more.

That vocal crack sounds like he's being emotional, I wouldn't worry about it. (I do vocals for a guy named Tennessee Bob, he's always telling me to sing with more grit on some words. He's gotten some movie cuts, so I guess he knows what he's doing.)

Really good song.

Hi Rob

That's a sampled fiddle? Wow! Not only is it very natural sounding but you've also taken a lot of care in programing it to make it sound "Played" like a real fiddle. I'm impressed!

Nice song, nicely played and sung. A few thoughts came to me as I listened to it so I'll share them with you for what it's worth.

- The kick drum. This was the first thing that kinda caught my ear. To me it's sound doesn't work here with too much beater and not enough shell. I'd either replace it or, at least, pull it back in the mix a bit and eq the top end off it so it's not quite so "Edgy". At the moment it's detracting from what is otherwise a nicely organic sound. Also, a tiny bit of velocity editing might help the groove to push along a bit better

- The guitar solo. Nice playing, well structured and reminiscent of David Gilmour's lyrical style. But it's not cutting through the mix as well as it could. A gentle boost around the 2-3k area might improve it quite a lot. I'd also roll of the bottom end at around 150hz. I'd also like to hear those strings brought up in the mix a bit here to better support the guitar and add to the "Majestic" quality of the solo.

I love the melody and harmonic shape of the choruses! I particularly like th III-IV-I cadence at the end. Actually, the whole song almost has a Pink Floyd flavour to it to me and I can imagine it with that type of lush, layered treatment.

VERY nice!!

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon!

As alway's, thank you for the detailed analysis and corrective measures to apply! I'm curious about the Kick. You've mentioned this also on another song of mine. I'm mixing on Mackie HR824's in a moderately treated room. (It's not perfect) I listen at low volumes and my listening position is the requisite eqilateral triangl. When making low end decisions, I'm lightly cutting the kick, (2-3 db) at 86hz and cutting the bass the same amount at 122hz with a Q of 5 on both. After much listening, twiddling, soloing etc.,this seems the best compromise, to my ears, on all of my reference monitoring.(Home stereo, car stereo, boom box, Mackie's) These settings gave me the best definiton between the bass and kick. I'm wondering if maybe I have a low frequency dip in my listening environement that coincides with a peak in yours? This might explain the objections to the kick sound?

The fiddle "sample" is sketchy, but it's what I heard whilst doing the arrangement. My usual "real" fiddle guy has not been available so I thought I would try and pull a fast one on you guy's!

I appreciate your critiques greatly my friend! They force me to micro analyze my mixes! Thanks!

Rob

Hi again Rob [Linked Image]

It's interesting that you're cutting the kick at 86 hz 'cos the spectrum still seems to peak around that area. But it's not really the eq that I was talking about so much as the actual "sound" of the kick. I only mentioned eq as a possible way of softening it a bit by getting rid of some of the beater sound - that sharp "clacky" transient. I do understand your desire to differentiate the bass from the kick but, to me, the kick just isn't sitting as subtly in the mix as I might have expected in this kind of music. Have you experimented with different samples?

One thing I've found quite useful sometimes to help the kick "sit" in the mix is to apply a tiny bit of short (around 20-30ms) gated verb. I'm not sure why but it seems to work in some mixes.

Interesting that you do the prescribed thing of listening through many different speakers and systems. I know I should do that too but, to be honest, am often too lazy LOL I guess that because I do all my "pleasure" listening through my monitors (Event 20/20s) I know them pretty well so I just use a couple of similar commercial recordings as my reference and work back from there. My studio is far from ideal in size and shape (has a nasty tendency to mask around the 120hz area) but I'm kinda used to it

Anyway, it goes without saying that the kick business is just my humble opinion [Linked Image] And I'm only being kinda pedantic in even mentioning it. As I said before, this is a VERY cool song - I like it [Linked Image]

Cheers

Simon

Verey crisp Acc Gtr playing and the mix balance was excellent.
Although, following the excellent advice you gave me on 'EQ carving' in the Recording forum a while ago I'm not surprised at the standard of the mix - you know your stuff
Its very much the type of song that James Taylor would come up with and the Gtrr intro reminded me of his trademark trills a bit
Great stuff!

Rob,

I'm listening right now, and I'll say it--I'm in love with this song. I'd love to hear Tim McGraw sing this, it'd be a perfect match IMO.
I'm not much of a technical nitpicker, it all sounded great to me!!! I feel like the chorus should repeat one more time in the end, but that's just how it felt to me.
Fantastic job, a real keeper, this one is.

Great work!!!

Hi MJM,

Thank you for the listen!

Simon,

It's kinda' funny about the beater transient, years ago I had a studio with less then ideal equipment. Used to record the band I was in and other friends and musicians. At that time, it was extremely difficult to get the beater transient to tape. A combination of bad slew rate equipment and limited mic resources. At times, the drummers equip was less then ideal and pourly maintained. Generally the kick would just go "ooofff" and just wash out the whole bottom end of the mix. I worked very hard with mic placement and eq to bring the beater pop to the foreground and shape the decay of the shell to be a little more angular then round. I guess I'm still doing this today! It is a concious thing and not an accident! I guess I like a little more "salt" in my soup then you! All is good though, I highly value other cook's perspectives, especially gourmet chef's like your self!

Hi Tony!

Thank you for your kind word's! Regarding the acoustic guitar,I recently acquired two hand picked Oktavia 012's, (small diaphram condensers), and am very pleased with the results, especially considering that the "source" is a hideous "pepto bismal pink thunderbolt super shallow Ovation" (whewh!) A superb stage guitar but not very full acoustically!

Nat,

Thank you for the listen and the kind words! You wouldn't happen to have Tim's number would you?

Rob

Ya know, Rob, your cooking analogy made me chuckle a bit. I LOVE cooking and it made me consider how my approach to the kitchen is kinda similar to my approach in the studio.

I like to use a lot of ingredients - especially unusual or slightly exotic ones. I never follow a recipe but prefer to kinda improvise and see what works through trial and error. I don't usually cook heavy meals and I sometimes cut corners and get a bit lazy in my methods. I get ideas for meals from eating out at restaurants by analysing the food and then going home and attempting to make something similar. I like to clean up as I go. I hate having others around me in the kitchen when I'm working! But, perhaps most of all, I cook out of the love of cooking which is why I would never really want to do it professionally (even though many have suggested that I should). I don't want to be bound to doing things the same way all the time and not being able to experiment constantly. And I feel pretty much the same about my music [Linked Image]

Cheers

Simon

PS.. perhaps one big difference is that in my cooking I like to use fresh and natural ingredients whereas in the studio I'm a bit more expedient. These days the sampled sounds are getting so good I'm usually happy enough to use them rather than going to the expense of hiring a live drummer and string section LOL

Hi Rob!

I think this will do better when shopping to publishers if the guitar lead is cut, and in spaces, have a more country/pop feel, along with the feeling of the song with a voilin or a Telecaster.

The singer hits the high notes in the chorus with straining his throat, breaking up, but without the good effect that could dome with that type of singing. I don't feel it sounds good there. If he could sing it strongly like he does at the end, I think he would sound really good in those earlier chorus spots.

Good song Rob! Like it a lot!

Hi Simon,

I can't cook a TV dinner, but I love gourmet food! Bon Apetit!

John,

The more I listen to it, the more I lean toward what you are suggesting. I think it went to "pop" sounding. Especially the "arena rock anthem" guitar solo. Maybe a string arrangement? What ever it is needs to be HUGE to contrast. Very good suggestions John, thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Rob,,,, You;re welcome.

Not string(s) though, but one violin, in tasty spots to compliment and counter the vocal, in my opinion. Not too much though. (Look who's talking about not too much)!!!
I should hear my own words and put them to use!

Hi, Rob.

I really enjoyed this. The chorus has such a strong melodic and lyric hook. I skimmed other people's comments and I agree with repeating the chorus at the end.
I think you need to get nitty gritty in each line and take out some unnecessary words. Such as "true" in the second line. and there are a couple other places. What that will do is give vocalists an opportunity to draw out the melody on some of the vowels.
I am also almost thinking the chorus would be stronger (absolutely my opinion [Linked Image]) if you simply switched the second and third lines. I think that might give the listener a little more time for what you're really saying to hit them.

I know I will be singing the chorus later today because it's catchy as a cold in a daycare.
