Hello Wirdaz. Yes I once thought about the theory of writing to what is already out there. However, after reading alot of pro comments on the subject, I was informed differently. Basically a good song is a good song. Write in your style and THEN look at what area of the industry suits that style and genre. There is so many styles and types out there. "Jet" isn't "Scissor Sisters"...who aren't "Madonna" or "Kylie". I do agree with the fact that being too "Artsy" can alianate an audiance and writing for radio can make sense. But Led Zeplin is one of the highest selling artists of all time...and when was the last time you heard them on a commercial radio? Heavy Metal is the highest selling genra...again, does Fox FM play it? so....don't know...Food for thought I guess. Hey guys!...Good Topic! My opinion.... I think it would depend on why you are writing. I love to write for me and in fact write a song now and then purely for me.....So if that is your inspirational flow and you dont mind if the songs sit in your desk or you play them on a sunday in the sun to family and friends..then thats a beautiful thing! but I think if you are aspiring to Write as a proffessional, to be paid for it then studing the proffessionals currently doing it is definately the key....You have to write for a market or artist in some sence...Imagine where you want your music to go , Imagine who do you want to sing it one day... It defiantely has to be commercial and have a hooky chorus....regardless of the genre from heavy metal to ballad...they all have that!....Even the most trippiest of 70's songs! The internet is a buzz with great articles to help hone your craft, if you are intereseted in going that way..TAXI has many fantastic articles available and some great hints and for the writer that wants to have their music heard on the Radio! I came across one the other week on what 100 of the past #1 Hits had in common...it was really interesting! When I find a good article like that I tend to print it off and put it into a folder and when I get to go to the beach or sit under a tree, by the local skate bowl ( yep kids!)..lol I take it and re-read over them... I think everyones writing experiences are personal and individual....and thank the lord for that!...whatever your angle....Goodluck with it and Enjoy! Music is a source! There is enough out there for EVERYONE....Including me! * Wink * Peace and Love Kitana www.kitana.info ------------------ Those that try....Succeed!

I am wondering how close Australia and New Zealand are musicially (and otherwise for that matter?). The US and Canada are very homogenized artistically, though politically there's a significant difference with the US being far more conservative and Canada being far more liberal in most things. Is there a similar relationship with Australia and NZ?

Brian</font> Hey Brian.....Do my best here: I do not think that we look to NZ at all in Comparison of anysort, including musically. We do get some good bands come across the water to end up being signed here ie: Everclear...but usually not many NZ songs end up on our charts. 'The Finn Bros and Bic Runger the exception.' How ours fair over there I am not aware...I know they have their own NZ Idol!...Never heard of the winners though. Politically, we are also very different. NZ having a Female Prime Minister and it appears also to be allot more conservative then Australia. Perhaps that is why they are all immigrating to Australian shores.....LOL ------------------ Those that try....Succeed!
