Hi Guys! The RSVP for this Sunday's event has been very low, possibly since it is Mother's Day...anyway, please RSVP to let me know if you were planning to come (the details are below). If there are at least 10-15 of us, then we'll still have the event. If not, then I'd rather we pass till we can get more folks out. Also, I'm not sure how successful we were this past month at supporting Mara (whose monthly spotlight wishlist I did paste below). Please email me or post on the LA bulletin board at www.jpfolks.com if you've given some support to Mara or plan to do something for her soon. Be sure to check out a new songwriting class forming on May 10th hosted by JPFolks Mentor: Harriet Schock (details at the very bottom) Have a magical, music-filled day Faith / JPFolks LA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ www.faithrivera.com =============== 5/8/05 JPFOLKS MOTHER'S DAY SONG CIRCLE 2pm Hosted by 2nd City Council Gallery www.2ndcitycouncil.org 435 Alamitos (between 4th & 5th) Long Beach, CA 90802-1643 (562) 901-0997 2:00-3:30pm Mother's Day Song Circle 3:30-4:00pm Mixer (eat/network/your special guests could leave at this time if they wanted to) 4:00-5:30pm Resource Sharing In honor of Mother's Day, we'll open with an 1 1/2 hours of songs celebrating women/feminine in our lives. To add to our event, let's invite a special lady or two (mom or not) to come & enjoy our special presentation of music. Please RSVP below with your Mother's Day song choice that you'd like to perform. I'd love for us to create more of a "performance" vibe, so I invite you the potential performers to do the following: dress up, really "perform" your song to the informal audience that will be there, have a special, but short greeting for moms/ladies in attendance, bring a special lady or two. I'll be selecting 15 performers based on their song choice. Once I get the performers down, I'll email you all something you can forward to your email lists to invite others to come enjoy the music & learn more about what we do. 5/8 RSVP (Please fill out completely & email back to me by hitting "reply") Name: Email: Phone: Website: Song Title & Tempo (forward me lyrics & mp3 if available): Acoustic or CD Tracks? Please, please show what extraordinary things a bunch of plain folks can do by reaching out to Mara to support her. Her wishlist is below: MARA'S WISHLIST **Wedding Song Project I've recorded a fantastic pop/country Wedding Song that I am looking to pitch to music supervisors on film & TV projects with wedding scenes (ie. reality shows, soap operas, etc). Any contacts would greatly appreciated - indie projects are cool as well. Phase two is to have the CD single available on major wedding websites and wedding-themed stores (David's Bridal, Robbins Bros, etc) with a portion of the proceeds going to breast cancer research. Any contacts in the wedding industry (or if you just know someone getting married who would like to hear the song!) would be very helpful. I can email you an MP3 if interested. **Musical Theater I'm getting back to my first love in life, which is performing in musicals. My two BIG wish shows are RENT and WE WILL ROCK YOU. I have headshot & resume available and I'm looking to make contacts with casting agents, musical theater writers & directors, playhouses and talent managers. **Flying Coaster PR - Need a bio or a press release? I write kick ass bios and press releases for indie artists ($150 bio/$60 press release). If yours needs a professional boost (or you know someone who needs one) let me know. www.flyingcoasterpr.com **None of the above apply? Well, I appreciate your willingness to make my wishes come true, so you could always check out www.marasong.com, sign up on the mailing list for the future and pick up a CD. That would be groovy. =============== HARRIET SCHOCK 10-WEEK WORKSHOP STARTING TUESDAY, May 10, 2005 7-10 PM Learn this step-by-step method of becoming remarkable at songwriting. Award-winning, gold and platinum songwriter/recording artist/author, Harriet Schock will be teaching her confidential step-by-step method in a 10-week workshop for the Songwriters Guild, starting Tuesday, May 10. Space is limited, so call right away. Harriet wrote words and music to the Grammy-nominated #1 hit, "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady" plus many songs for other artists and numerous films. Her fourth, fifth and sixth CDs, "American Romance," "Rosebud" and "Harriet Schock - Live from Fairfax to Pasadena" have recently been nationally released, as well as her book, BECOMING REMARKABLE. Harriet Schock is a renowned teacher of songwriting as well as a consultant to songwriters all over the world. She teaches a step-by-step method that enables songwriters to become remarkable at writing songs -- songs that touch people emotionally. And Harriet doesn't simply coach a student through the writing of one song. She teaches a technique that students can use now and in the future to make every single song the very best it can be. Every muscle of songwriting gets exercised. The ten-week course consists of ten lessons, which create a solid foundation for writing songs effortlessly. Problems such as beginning a song and not knowing how to finish it, unclear or illogical lyrics, lack of response from listeners, weak melody, uncompelling harmony, and other difficulties that can plague songwriters seem to vanish when a writer uses the system taught in Harriet's course. The price is $325 for non-members, $276 for Gold Members and $244 for Platinum members of the Songwriters Guild. If students do not already own Harriet Schock’s book/CD package “Becoming Remarkable/Rosebud” they will be required to purchase it at the first class for $20. Space is limited. Call (323) 462-1108 (SGA) or (323) 934-5691 (Harriet) to reserve your place and get directions. MC, Visa, Amex, Discovery accepted. For more information about Harriet Schock, you may go to http://www.harrietschock.com Hit reply to this to save your place. Just a few days left and a few openings! TESTIMONIALS "I can't think of a better way to get into songwriting. Harriet's method shows you that there's no such thing as writer's block. The class is fun and you watch everyone's creation grow, deepen and often come to a surprise ending. It's really fun and important." Tracy Newman, TV Writer/Producer, co-creator of ABC's "According to Jim" Harriet has turned my musical world upside down. Now I can see endless possibilities in my songwriting. Lisa Sanders Harriet is the fairy godmother of songwriting. She has a magic method that helps you create incredible songs. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. Annie Smith (repeat student) Harriet Schock inspires one to say what you mean and mean what you say. She provides the reliable steps to keep track of your ongoing direction until that happy result “The Song!” Madelena Morgan Harriet will open up your writing, you will not believe the things that you find yourself writing. You will actually finish your songs – imagine that. Great fun being in the class and learning a lot each time. Michelle Krell After five years of study with Harriet – her inspiration to my writing is tried and tested. I may stray but I always come back. Anna Montgomery (touring singer-songwriter) Although I’ve been in music all my life, and playing piano, I’ve never written a real song before and the process scared me. But Harriet’s easy and methodical steps made writing a creative lyric doable, and I am truly excited about what her class drew out of me, that I never knew was there. I won’t stop with one song! Roberta Zito I am a singer who also plays piano and guitar. I’ve written poetry my entire life, and had many half songs and melodies. Harriet single-handedly helped me put the pieces together to write a complete song. Her steps are clear and easy. I will continue to use her steps. Her experience, ear and guidance can benefit any songwriter. Genevieve D. Yang

I just wanted to post a note to say that a good friend of mine took Harriet Schock's class and got a huge amount out of it. I noticed a BIG difference in his work after the class compared to the work before the class - more sophistication, more clarity, less "filler".
Given my location - both for home and work - it isn't practical for me to sign up for the class, but I wanted to put in a good word for a class that obviously makes a difference.

Hi Faith, just wanted to say I went to Mara's Website and signed up for her mailing list. What great upbeat music. Thanks for the idea of the spotlight. It's what this organization is about.

Faith,
Even if this particular month hasn't been as productive as we want, I think this idea is one of the best any member has ever come up with for JPF. I am wondering how we might do something with this idea on an organization wide basis? Imagine if we had 25,000 people taking a shot at helping someone every month? Sure, 90% of people rarely lift a finger to help someone else.. but 10% almost always do.. and you never know.. it might catch on to a wider circle.
I'd like to entertain discussion on this topic!
