Hi,
I'm a songwriter based in the UK and I have several songs slated for commercial release (primarily in the US) during 2002. Consequently, I've started to think about joining a PRO.
ASCAP appears the most appealing to me, because of the impressive claims they make with respect to royalty collection, the fact that they are run by writers, and also because of their very reasonable writers' membership fee of $10 per annum.
However, as I live in the UK, I'm wondering whether it would be more appropriate for me to join the UK PRO which is called the PRS. They seem far less substantial than ASCAP and BMI and charge a one off joining fee of £100, which seems a little excessive.
I'm aware that many of the PROs (e.g. ASCAP and PRS) have agreements that allow them to collect foreign royalties on each other's behalf, so it doesn't seem to make much difference which PRO I join in terms of where I live. Or does it?
Any advice would greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Simon

Simon, You need to call ascap and PRS and ask if they have reciprocal agreements with each other. I'm sure they do and if so it doesn't matter which one you join. you will get the correct royalties. ascap is $10 a year, BMI is free to join with no dues ever, and I don't know about other PRO's (SESAC etc.) out Ben Stevenson (BMI) http://ridgewaycoloursystem.iuma.com [This message has been edited by nickdrake2001 (edited 12-26-2001).]

I'll look into that.
