I can't even begin to explain this one. Just that it's the closest thing to a love song I've ever written... Shovelhead In the hills, a baby born To parents newly wed With a face like a dirty movie And they called her Shovelhead She would prowl down by the river In the moonlight as she fed She wore a mask of darkness Little Shovelhead One day a man came calling Drawn by tales he'd read Of a girl most unusual A girl called Shovelhead (bridge) He was blinded by his lonliness His heart had made him weak They embraced behind the toolshed Too in love to speak... It's been five years, September Since she & I were wed Our happy little family And she's my Shovelhead More obscene musings from Shandytown... ------------------ Shandy Lawson http://www.shandylawson.com

Weird, but amusing, for some reason. I'm not sure what genre you're shooting for here...alt-comedy? Very interesting. When are you expecting some little spades? Corey

Evenin' Shandy,
Had a dog named Shovelhead onct. His head was all flat on top like somebody had slammed down on him good with a shovel. Brought back fond memories of that dog.

Sounds like a beautiful dog, dawg. I've been wondering if you're a David Grisman fan, by the way... Corey-- I'm kind of a "Tom Waits meets John Prine" thing (hard to envision, I know), but this one will be an attempt at a bluegrass number... I've just been completely infatuated with the mandolin lately, so I need to vent in some fairly traditional way. This tune was screaming for some McCoury picking and Monroe howling. We'll see if I can actually pull it off in a week or so. Between you and me: I can't. But I'll have fun anyway -Shandy

This'uns a dandy, Shandy. Glad to know it really is sorta bluegrassy, cause that was what it felt like to me.
BTW.. I was just listening to the music you did for Greg on Bonnie Augustine. NICE! Love that Boise, Idaho line.

Thanks, Bobbie... though I can't claim credit for any of the lines. Greg just came up with a good one there, and once in a while they strike me the right way. I think I've only done the music thing for other folks three times: you, Greg and (I believe) Jule. Coulda been you twice, I'm not sure. Who wrote "Out of the Picture...?"

shandy, Whut in the blue blazes is she eatin' (that necessitates "prowling for") down there by the river in the moonlight?? Haw! That's my favorite scene in this weird mind-movie. [My imagination is showing me, but I'm not sure I want to look! LOL]

I think whut she's eatin' is fish. Y'know, like a bear does, standing out in the water pawing at salmon with her claws... chawin' away at it on the riverbank like a kid with corn on the cob.
Or it could be frogs. I think she might be hiding in the reeds like a puma or something, ready to pounce on that sweet amphibious protein. Little girls need protein, you know. Very important in helping to develop a healthy, shiny coat and bright eyes.

Hi Shandy,
It was a toss-up for me what I would name my next child. It was either shovelhead or clawhammer. I like the former.
Haven't been here for awhile, and it's good to see that you're still at it. Nice job.
Cheers
Barry

Barry Crannell, I presume? Good to hear from ya... I actually just came back, myself. Took a year or so off, but this joint just sucks you back in like a bad horror flick. (In reality, I just missed Jule & Bobbie, but you gotta sound tough for the ladies, y'know?) Welcome back, anyway. We'd like to see what you've been up to... and by the way, I think 'Clawhammer' is a beautiful name for a little girl.

Hey Shandy! This is great stuff. Kinda reminds me a little of the hunchback story...and wasn't it appropos that shovelhead find her true love behind the toolshed. Poetic justice at its finest! I checked out your site and gotta tell ya, you have some great stuff!! Keep it up! Tink

Hey Shandy. Glad I decided to take a peek in here. I've been somewhat scarce lately myself. Good to see your, Bobbie's, Barry's (BARRY, write to me dammit!)Ozone's names again. Kinda like old home week or something.
This little bit of whimsy surely comes from the Shandy Lawson pen I came to know and love a year or so ago. At first, I wanted to know a little more of what, how and why, but then decided it didn't matter. Truth is, I just love lyrics that defy explanation and understanding.
Great to hear, see, read and sniff from you again.

Thanks for sniffin' Greg... Missed your name around here. It's like a class reunion this last week-- Jule popped up a few times, too.
True: don't wonder about the "what how & why." It makes sense in Shandytown, but there the inmates run the asylum and the streets never get cleaned. Sounds like a lousy place, but it's home.
Thanks for dropping by, Greg-- you should stick around and have a few with us, no?
