Watching Date Line NBC tonight. This was part three of their “Sexual Predators” investigation where they busted people responding to Internet solicitations of minors. While I found the entire piece both sad and disturbing, the songwriter who got busted really got to me. All the other “predators” brought booze, contraceptives, cameras and in one case, whipped cream. What the songwriter bring?………….. His CD.

What is so special about songwriters that we can imagine there is not some of every class of humanity in their number? What a person does as ewither a living or as a hobby has no bearing on what their mind and concience allows them to see as acceptable behaviour. Whole thing sounds just a little suspicious to me. Was the songwriter expecting to do kinky things to the victim with the CD? (I did manage to think of a couple. Don't ask.) I do worry about a lot of independents getting tarred advertently or inadvertently with the same brush here--yep, guy's a songwriter, has a CD, better stay away from *him*. Just because at 56 I predate a lot of things, it does not mean I am a predator... Joe www.soundclick.com/bands/7/joewrabek_music.htm

I saw the first part of that series. It was quite disturbing. I was more shocked to see school teachers, doctors, and others who work with children as an everyday thing. I am less concerned about a musician who is a pervert. Musicians are typically on the fringe anyway. The thing that should outrage people is the pervasiveness of the problem.. People who prey on children for sex, has beco me a huge problem in this country and around the world.
Who cares if a predator is a musician, He is still a predator. Who cares if he brought a CD..
Think about it. Most of these child sexual predators are our next door neighbors, not the purple haired singer on tv., They look like a "Nice Guy" the act like a "Nice Guy"
There is a great sickness in this world, and we need to be looking for a cure. Religion has not cured it, only made it worse. Politics, Secularism and Greed, have done the same.
Making jokes and flip remarks about child sex perdators just makes them stronger. Doesn't really matter if you are a predator or not. You still feed the energy that allows them to exist.

Hypothetical..
I could see someone coming up with a new show becoming a underground punked type show..(video taped) Where a bunch of bored teenage kids set up a fake house like the NBC show did. But in their episode the guys getting lured into the Fake house then unsuspectly get pummeled by baseball bats..on video of course..
That would sell like hot cakes..
I know it's sick.. Just instant rehablilitation in my mind..

I've got just one word ....
CASTRATION
inexpensive, instant and permanent
(this would be on a case by case basis of course - no castrating an 18 year old who was with a 16 year old, kind of thing...... only for the real predatory slimeballs)

Just being devil's advocate here... A lot of these guys are not necessarily "slimeballs". Some of them are thinking and functioning on an 8th grade level. Not to say that makes it right or excusable, but i've seen cases where the guy is really looking for a relationship. They're mentally challenged, not in the way we normally think of a mentally challenged person, but rather socially mentally challenged. Basically, they're too dumb to ever have a relationship with an adult, so they feel comfortable dating a minor who is mentally on their level. Now, of course, the majority are sick bastards, but as crazy as it may sound, let's not always assume that they ALL have deviant intentions. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

This is really creepy. The songwriter that was busted on Dateline was the SAME guy that I performed with last June in a Songsalive songwriters' showcase in Santa Monica....There were a total of 6 songwriters performing that night. When I saw the Dateline show, I was pretty sure - after they announced his name - that it was the same guy. Just to be sure - I checked my old emails with the artist line up that night....to see if it was the same guy- BINGO- it was....YUK....

Emily, People always ask what they can do to help rid this world of pedophiles, first to Christine; castration is not really a solution because rape and usually murder of our children has very little to do with sex. They are penetrated with many more objects than a penis and cutting the predator's testicals off does not change their sickness. Back to a small solution; Emily, if you are certain, then it is your responsiblity to all of our children to 'out' this pedophile. He is by now out of jail, if he was jailed at all, and every child is a potential victim. Otherwise you are protecting the perpetrator, not the children.

I didn't mean to suggest to Emily it was her responsibility to publicly "out" anyone. He was already on television and so to some extent he's been outed. But she doesn't have all the legal facts or direct knowledge of anything beyond watching a TV show. I do think it might be helpful for us to know who it is because I would have no problem directly confronting the person if they wanted to participate in a JPF event going forward. I had to confront someone else who was posting here who turned out to be a convicted (and later admitted directly to me it was true) child molester. That person is no long involved with our group or posting on this site.
We can't be police, but once info is made public, we can confront people and take reasonable action to protect our members. In the case of the other individual, some people were concerned that he was using a ploy to get people to trust him which could have set up future abuses. If Emily is able to let me know offline via email who the person is, we can take appropriate actions on our end without her taking on the responsibility of being judge and jury publicly based simple on watching a TV show.
I think all sane and rational people are strongly against child predators and would probably like to see them get severe punishment. (Dennis Miller suggested instead of a new "tracking" system they are recommending for convicted child rapists, that instead they use a more proven method to always know where they are.. BURIAL!) But I digress.
I think in the end this is one more case that these folks (and other horrible people) are well hidden in plain site among us. Everyone should use caution and discretion if considering meeting anyone they meet on line in person and when it comes to kids, they should NEVER be exposed to ANYONE they meet on line without a parent present at all times.
