There's A Man In My Life Copyright 2025 by Wes Ryan Genre: Country Rock Key: G Major Tempo: 120 BPM Time Signature: 4/4 Vibe/Feel: A high-energy modern country rock anthem with a suspicious twist
[Verse 1] Boot prints in the dirt I ain't seen before, I think (yeah) I smelled cologne when I came through the door (I think) I got an empty feelin’ somethin’ might be wrong (mmm…hmmm) When I reach for her she's already gone Dinner's still warm, but she’s ice cold And the smile she used to wear feels bought and sold
[Chorus] There’s a man in my life, and I don’t even know his name Just whispers in the still and a change I can’t explain Somebody’s kickin' up his boots when I’m not around And I swear I hear him in the quiet sounds She don’t say nothin’, but it cuts like a knife There’s a man in my life… and he might know my wife
[Verse 2] She’s hummin’ new songs I ain’t ever heard (mmm) Dressed up real nice, not sayin’ a word Leaves at noon every other Monday Says she’s meetin’ friends—comes back a new shade Now she can't even look me in the eye And I can’t tell if the truth’s in her sigh
[Chorus] There’s a man in my life, and I don’t even know his name Just whispers in the still and a change I can’t explain Somebody’s kickin' up his boots when I’m not around (yeah) And I swear I hear him in the quiet sounds She don’t say nothin’, but it cuts like a knife There’s a man in my life… and he might know my wife
[Bridge] I’ve begged the silence for an answer, but it won’t speak Just creaks in the floor and lies in the sheets I ain't got proof, but I’ve got the ache There’s a someone standin’ in my place
[Final Chorus] There’s a man in my life, and I don’t even know his name (hey) He's ghostin' in my hallways and messin' with my brain Somebody’s leavin’ marks I can’t erase And she ain’t tryin’ hard to hide his trace Yeah, I’m holdin’ on to a love gone dry There’s a man in my life… and he might know my wife
[Tag] There’s a man… in my life… And I… don’t EVEN… Know his name
We all find our inspiration in different things. I've found I write better when I do it in regards to my own experiences. This song was written about my first marriage. My ex was sneaking around with someone I thought was my friend in my hometown of less than 300. Seems like everyone knew it but me. I was working all of the time. I'd come home and it was like she wasn't even there. I changed the story a little from that experience but I did focus on that unexplainable feeling one gets when someone is cheating on them. I remember thinking to myself after I caught them together, "I knew it!". And I did. I felt it between the sheets, her demeanor, the still of the house, etc. Divorces can be a source of a lot of good writes. Glad you liked it.
My wife is from a town in Iowa of 200 people. If someone sneezes, everybody hears it and they can tell you who it was.
Question: (and potential song material) answering is optional Why was it that your ex got to that point, and didn't cut clean and move on with some dignity.
