A song written way before my beard was gray...........1972........produced/recorded 2024. I was in no hurry to go back to this heartache. Decided to record it before I kick the bucket. This is just another song about breaking up at the age of 19 and my 1st heartache. I remember being influenced by a (circa 1970) Glenn Campbell song, "It's only make believe." Not that there is a music similarity, but I wrote this song progressing in half step key changes like that song for a "building effect" with no real chorus. I hope you enjoy it, comments always welcome. steady-eddie [color:#33CCFF][/color] MARY DEAR - music/lyrics by e.swartz Mary DearMary dear please don’t ever leave me All I ask is that you believe me When I say that I love you so Don’t you ever, don’t ever let go You read my journal, my personal thoughts Just foolish fantasy like Camelot The things I wrote I know they hurt you so Condemning words that you would not let go My youthful ego thought flirting was clever But I went too far, and lost you forever With a broken heart, I bid you adieu And ponder my fate, had I been more true (Solo) (Repeat vs 1) Oh no --- Oh no – don’t let go, don’t let go, don’t let go

"steady-eddie!" What a nice surprise Yep', sweet-n-simple 70s alright. I'm gonna' have to try that progression with my new Gretsch and an old Marshall! Just sayin', lol... Nice Harmonies! Good to hear from you! I'm sure you've got plenty left

Nice simple song. The lyric has a pleasantly naive quality to it - how old were you when you wrote it?
The melody reminded me a bit of Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted" in places.
I enjoyed this one.

Thanks Tony!
Thanks Gavin!
I was 19 or a young 20 yrs of age. When I dusted this old song off, I kept pretty much the original lyrics that I had written back in 72'. I did tweak a couple of lines but felt I wanted the song to keep to its real youthful feelings of that time. I here the similarity as well with Ruffin song, but there is a slight different deviation of overall song melody and timing. I wasn't aware of that until recently myself. Hard to believe that this song is over 50 years old.........Although I've played the song throughout the years occasionally on my guitar, just procrastinated recording it.

Ben & Tom,
Thanks for the spin. I originally had another verse from years ago but decided to "nix" it when recording this, as that that 4th vs was too redundant so I opted for an fading outro with a slightly different melody. Rewinding my brain to 1972.........I think I was influenced Bread's 1972 "Diary" song for literary context (though without the ending "twist at the ending). I remember that feeling of "young love break-ups" and how it seemed the world was ending, it seems so innocent now, but I did want to express that desperate innocence in those vocals--probably would be better with a "young" man's voice I'm sure.
