The Old Man Blues. (copyright writer John Paragreen/ music Bill Draper)
I used run like a young gazelle I was the fastest kid on the block Now my right hip gives me gip And my knees creak when I walk, I could hear a pin hit the carpet Spot a dime from across the street Now my tv wont go any louder And I can barely see my feet.
Chorus You can work real hard And pay your dues But you cant escape The old man blues.
My buddies called me squirrel Cause I’d climb the tallest tree These days a sidewalk kerb Looks like Everest to me I rode my bike like Evel Knievel To impress Amy Wilson Now I shuffle on a zimmer And Miss World couldn’t turn me on.
Bridge I live on meds Blues, pinks and reds No big Macs for me, When I hear the doctor yell That I’m doing well I wonder how he got his degree.
Yeah I was a party animal Dancing like a wild baboon Now I get dizzy tapping a toe And I go to bed at noon, I was cool in the swimming pool As slick as any dolphin Now I’m scared to have a bath Cause I broke a rib getting in.
Chorus You can work real hard And pay your dues But you cant escape The old man blues.
No you can't escape The old man blues.

Yeah the menu cutting board....The Keg steakhouse. That was a great bargain back in my college days in the 70's....great steak and all you can eat salad bar for $5.....party time! The chords, you know , are the same ones from Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant. Thanks Tony! https://flic.kr/p/2qJp9Bg

Hi John. you are welcome. that was fun to do, and fairly easy to adapt from the chord chart I had. I participate in a large ukulele group, we meet once a week and have a profession musician teaching/leading the group. A lot of the songs are old style like this. I haven't sung it at open mic yet. I am the financial officer of a small charitable organization and we have a social gathering once a week for 3 hours....sandwiches, coffee, and an open mic for story telling, poetry reading. musicians. fun. Bill

Great fun Bill, yes that progression did sound like an "old style" of "walking blues" ...and John good lyric to work with.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Hello John V! Some fun, yes.
I missed the cadence in the sing of the bridge, and had to talky improvise, was going to do over (because that bridge poking fun at the good doctor is funny!), but then thought...ok senior moment lol, it fits. Also, when I sing at open mics, I'm always ad-libbing mistakes...it keeps me relaxed too, haha. Cheers! Bill

"Money is worst reason to be motivated NOT to do anything. Instead of letting those concerns STOP you, use it to motivate yourself to find an alternate solution that bypasses money. You will soon find that your own resourcefulness is worth far more than a pile of paper money." –Brian Austin Whitney
