Here is a challenge. We know that the song title should appear often in the lyrics and are told that it should preferably be in the chorus. I can think of several songs that break this rule. There are hit songs where the title appears only once or maybe not at all. Can you think of some. Simple rules they must have been hits or well known established songs.
Here is a starter.
The Boxer. Paul Simon. It appears only once and well into the song in the first line of the last verse. How is that for breaking the rules.

Man, my Brain's Poached this AM...
Can't think of any.
But DO recall "Tequila"...where the Hook is the ONLY Word to The Lyric! (& Of Course, "Green Onions"..which has Zero Words!)
Been a While since An Instrumental's been a hit, eh? "Telstar".."The Happy Organ".. & now Brain's back to "Empty"-&-Addlepated again...Time for the AM Coffee!
FUN Thread..Keep up da Good Work, Amigos! Big Hugs, Stan

Great topic! How about album title that aren't titled after any of the songs? Most people usually often times use a song as the title. I can think of a recent one. Carrie Underwoods new CD "Carnival Ride". She has no song that I know of named Carnival Ride. Tammy www.tammyedwards.comwww.myspace.com/tammyedwards2

iris goo goo dolls
sometimes artists misname songs they can do that they're the artist
but the songs still have a implied title and hook the most repeated phrase in the song
iris by the goo goo dolls if properly named would be "I Just Want you to know who I am"

Nah...they don't misname them. Those titles just don't conform to those pesky "rules" that don't really exist.

So what we are really saying is just about everything except country. That is the point I was trying to establish with this question. Now to prove me wrong how about any famous country songs that do not use the title in the lyric.

Big Jim,
Tom T. Hall / The Ballad of Forty Dollars. The very last line of the song is "The trouble is, the fellow owes me forty bucks". That's as close as he gets to the title. Forty dollars is not mentioned anywhere in the lyric. It was a Top ten Hit in 1970 or 1971. It's a really great story song:
Get “Ballad Of Forty Dollars” c) Tom T. Hall 1969
The man who preached the funeral Said it really was a simple way to die ... He laid down to rest one afternoon And never opened up his eyes ... They hired me and Fred and Joe To dig the grave and carry up some chairs ... It took us seven hours And I guess we must have drunk a case of beer. ...
I guess I ought to go and watch them put 'im down But I don't own a suit And anyway when they start talkin' about The fire in Hell, well, I get spooked So, I'll just sit here in my truck And act like I don't know 'im when they pass Anyway, when they're all through I've got to go to work and mow the grass.
Well, here they come and who's that Ridin' in that big ol' shiny limousine Mmh! look at all that chrome, I do believe That that's the sharpest thing I've seen That must belong to his great uncle Someone said he owned a big ol' farm When they get parked I'll mosey down and look it over, that won't do no harm.
Well, that must be the widow in the car And would you take a look at that That sure is a pretty dress You know some women do look good in black Well, he's not even in the ground And they say that his truck is up for sale They say she took it pretty hard But you can't tell too much behind the veil.
Well, listen ain't that pretty When the bugler plays the Military "TAPS" I think that when you's in the war They always hide 'n play a song like that Well, here I am and there they go And I guess you'd just call it my bad luck I hope he rests in peace, the trouble is The fellow owes me forty bucks.
I'm not sure this will qualify, but...
Johnny Cash / Folsom Prosn Blues. He says Folsom Prison, but never Folsom Prison "Blues", per se.

Only country song I can think of is George straits "The Chair" The word chair occurs 3 times in the song (not in the chorus); however "The Chair" together, is no where in the song. Derek

Badge was co written by George Harrison and he later stole Claptons arpeggio from it for Here Comes the Sun. A lot of folk do not know that. Seems Harrison stole a lot of licks and riffs. Now let the fur fly.

Oh My Big Jim
I'm gonna have to duck out of here quickly before the hot lead starts flying (lead as in bullets if anyone was wondering). I was speaking of how clapton (who was working with Harrison at the time) had written a song where harrison was helping him and harrison was looking at the music sheet. Clapton had hastily written bridge at the bridge section. Harrison thought it was the name of the song and interpreted it to be "Badge". So Clapton decided to call the song Badge. Derek

Another intersting case where a song was misnamed and it stuck was Led Zepplins "Dyer Maker". The original name of the song was Jamacia. One night in concert some drunken spectator yelled out "hey play thay Dyer Maker song". The rest is history. Derek

The way I heard it Ringo was the one who misread bridge as badge. Clapton seemingly is as bad a handwriter as me. LOL
The Police had a hit with "So Lonely." At the same time we had a BBC TV newsreader called Sue Lawley. She thought the song was about her and so tongue in cheek did many other folk so it stuck. Sue Lawley Sue Lawley was a popular chant of the time.

Hey Big Jim
That's quite possible, although I thought it was ginger baker who played drums on the track. Who knows maybe Ringo was hanging around for the heck of it. Interesting story about the police lyric. I don't think I've heard that one. Derek

You are correct Baker was the drummer but George Harrison and Ringo used to hang around rehearsals. Interesting stories. I like these things. Amazing how some great songs came about through mistakes or misunderstandings. There must be many more examples.

There's always a wisenhiemer in every crowd. LOL. I went through my song list of over 200 songs and only came up with 2 songs. "The Weight" (already stated) and "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin.

"Beat The Devil" from Kris Kristoffersons first album. There's a line in the song that says "I ain't saying I beat the devil, but I drank his beer for free, and then I stole his song." But I think the actual title is " TO Beat th Devil" so you'd be right.

Dylan "Rainy Day Women Number 12 & 35" (Everybody Must Get Stoned)
"Subterranean Homesick Blues"
And somebody mentioned Tom T. Hall. "Homecoming" never had the title either.

With the recent passing of one of greatest influences in my life, I'd offer up Larry Norman's, "The Great American Novel"
Fantastic lyrics, but never says these words.
His funeral service was held like a celebration - the way he wanted it. There were circus programs in full color that said "Larry Norman presents - a Going Away Party." Hot dogs and cracker jacks were enjoyed afterwards.
And Steve West - a wisenheimer? I resemble that remark...

Tom you reminded me of Theme from an imaginary western. Another classic.
Seems that Dylan (most of his stuff)and a few Rock idols wrote titles that did not appear in the songs. Very few country songs qualify.

Tom, Is this the same Larry Norman who was a Christian performer back in the early 70's? "No More LSD for me" & another song about the Exodus where "all the Egyptians took a bath...Dirty 'Gyptians"? In verse 2 of my song "Twisted life" I sort of reference him. My lyric "...while the lonely man with electric guitar sings the blues and he hopes to die" was about a couple of Larry's songs - "So Lonely by Myself" and "I Feel Like Dyin'"
I think we hijacked the thread....

Now to prove me wrong how about any famous country songs that do not use the title in the lyric. Has anyone mentioned John Denver's "Annie's Song"? That was country and the titled didn't appear in the lyric. Other songs I can think of (not country) where the title doesn't appear, or is twisted so as not to be exact are Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend", Billy Joel's "Scene's From An Italian Restaurant", Barry Manilow's "Weekend In New England".
