What are the royalties that record labels and artist pay writers and publishers for recording songs these days. The last that I recall was BMI= 9.1 cents and SOCAN was 8.5 cents, has there been any change over the years.

ASCAP was 9.5 on my last statement.

Music Business World article on new royalty (since 2022) for physical sales of music. Went from 9.1 cents to 12 cents for writer/publisher. Maybe it’s being phased in.

I asked SOCAN and never got a straight answer, either they did not know what I was asking or they didn't know themselves. They said it depended on the deal worked out with the artist.

This year my international royalties surpassed my domestic. That's interesting. 40+ countries show up on those statements.

Congratulations John. It seems every country has different values for music. In order to get airplay royalties you have to have a ISRC number for each song. can get costly and you may never get any airplay, the majors have that under control.

Hey Brian, I've had quite a few the last several months. "After Midnight Show" & "American Horror Stories" are two. I'll post more sometime. I am excited about a major movie placement. It hasn't been released yet, so I can't mention it until then. Thanks for asking.

I had 14 cue sheets turned into ASCAP for "Total Sports 360". I have no idea what that is. Anyone know?

I talked with my publisher today. He said there still isn't a release date, but to keep checking on IMDb for updates. He did say I could share this. The movie is "You're Dating a Narcissist". Marisa Tomei is a psychiatrist. She was Vinny's girlfriend in My Cousin Vinny. Loved her in that role.

John is the quiet musical assassin! Just pops in, gets a cut without making a noise! I am still waiting for the up to date cut list. Can you do it IMDB style where you list the year, the cut and the show/film? I think it's impressive enough to deserve such a listing!

Wow you have a lot of sync cuts man , congrats. I got a few contracts thru Nancy Peabody , But never heard much back . you must have some great contacts to get them thru , great job man .

Thanks! It's partially luck in choosing the good contacts, but also having a large amount of music and spreading it around like manure, hoping something will grow.

Thanks! It is more difficult today than it was a decade ago. Many music libraries aren't accepting new music any longer.

Yeah it was 10 years ago I was trying sync . Sounds right... even more difficult now .
Buddy of mine Topel studied with sync guys in Nashville , has a few cuts on Netflix. whole new direction than Radio songs , interesting stuff John

Yes. And the music sync business took a dive during the Covid pandemic. Libraries laid off workers, so there wasn't enough manpower to critique new music. Many libraires weren't accepting new work during that period. ASCAP employees worked from home, which slowed down the processing of new works. 2024 seems to be getting back to normal. Libraries are accepting again. Still don't know the effect AI will have on the business. Some won't accept AI productions. One of my publishers have you sign and state that AI wasn't used in the music submitted to them.

AI ? no idea John . Nashville publishers don't take AI songs , they're worried about getting sued. Not sure on sync John , probably the same deal , law suites over AI.

I imagine some AI productions will sneak through even if they are poison to publishers.

Probably , Once they nail it to real real sounding , more your field . I talked to Bz Lewis today ( my producer and mix guy) he does a lot of film and TV work , We kinda joked around on AI.
