The music and lyrics of the song were improvised on stage during a concert in Southern Ontario[10] (the guitarist, Randy Bachman, recalled it being at a concert in Kitchener,[11] although Burton Cummings, the lead singer, said it was at the Broom and Stone, a curling rink in Scarborough).[12] Bachman was playing notes while tuning his guitar after replacing a broken string, and he realized he was playing a new riff that he wanted to remember. He continued playing it and the other band members returned to the stage and joined in, creating a jam session in which Cummings improvised the lyrics.[11] They noticed a kid with a cassette recorder making a bootleg recording and asked him for the tape.[13] They listened to the tape and noted down the words that Cummings had extemporized, and which he later revised.[12]

Clue: the song was a hit in 1976 and credited to one writer. In 1986, another writer sued for plagiarism and won. This writer now shares co-writing credit. (Too many clues.)

Here’s JPF Mystery Tune #154 (Revised). Added a few more notes. This was an instrumental hit in 1968. Number 4 on the easy listening charts, or Adult Contemporary.
No, David, it’s not Hold Me Tight, sorry. It’s an instrumental and was written by a French artist, singer-songwriter, but performed by a different French musician and orchestra leader. It did chart in the U.S. though in 1968.

Alice's restaurant! That is a coincidence. I just read in an article( I was reading for research for the next NTT), that the chord structure utilized for this song used the circle of fifths in organizing the chord selection...cool.
This is NTT # 155. This song is a classic folk song. Its origins are lost in the mists of time. Its been reworked and sung by many country music (outlaws) Bluegrass genre.
The music artist I am currently thinking of (and part of this contest, that you must guess)....I came across on a youtube short....and I was struck blind with the music emote
So I listened to more of her songs and picked one as NTT # 155.
Gimme a mina and I'll add a sound bit clue next.

The artist I'm thinking of, was raised by a single mom, left home as age 19 or so, 10 years ago, road the rails across USA, busking, playing in festivals, ended up in Nashville as one of the many street performers. She played at the dollar bill bar and has been very much american dreaming. She just recently got a gig at the grand ole opry (wherever that is).
The song I'm thinking of was Charlie Poole's first commercial recording. sold 100,000 copies.

Both writers are/were British. One was a noted film composer from the ‘60s and later years known for his lush musical scores. The other writer is primarily a lyricist who has worked with Quincy Jones, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lulu, Henry Mancini, Meat Loaf and many others.
