A new song I'm playing around with. All comments and suggestions appreciated as always.

https://soundcloud.com/themysteriousbeings/you-could-be-a-serial-killer/s-YV5hwas8khu

YOU COULD BE A SERIAL KILLER

You could be a serial killer and I'd love the cute way
You held the knife
When you drive at eighty-five, I don't know how we'll survive
But to go with you I'll risk my life
I'm so in love with you
Can't get enough of everything that you do
You think you're a superstar
Well, baby, maybe you are

When I see you come in the room
I know my heart should run for cover
Something in the way you assume we'll resume
What we started and you'll be my lover
No point in fighting it.
I know that you're right 'n'
It’s happening again

Maybe I need rehab to cure me of thinking it would be fab
To be your man
Something in my psyche that makes me say, "I likey"
Instead of getting out while I can
I guess that's just my way
Can't help believing every word that you say
I know I should run a mile
But then you flash that smile

When I see you come in the room
I know my heart should run for cover
Something in the way you assume we'll resume
What we started and you'll be my lover
No point in fighting it.
I know that you're right 'n'
It’s happening again

[Instrumental break]

No use wishing, I could break free.
My condition has no remedy.
Gave up the fight so long ago,
But I guess you already know

When I see you come in the room
I know my heart should run for cover
Something in the way you assume we'll resume
What we started and you'll be my lover
No point in fighting it.
I know that you're right 'n'
It’s happening again

I've been researching BIAB I don't think I have the system requirements and my CD player stopped working with windows 10 upgrade. It is supposed to be better than ever. I can download but if it doesn't work, I'm SOL because no refunds. Is it worth the $399.00? ? Your production sounded studio quality, maybe it has a tool I need most, some pitch correction on the vocals?

Her's the thing--my version of BIAB was for the MAc--and I think that was part of the problem. My latest co-write was done with Rick Courtney. He did his own mixing I'm pretty sure he didn't use BIAB. I'll send him a message and ask him what he used. As far as BIAB --it's a pretty steep learning curve. Below is a link to my one and only song done with BIAB. It was fun to do as a co-write. Mt barber did the vocals and base tune and I added everything else. It was during the times when the government was trying to shut down the auto factories and bailing them out, lol.

Chester, you don't need a CD player. You either run it off your computer's hard drive or, like me, off the external hard drive that is delivered with the larger versions. You can start with the basic $129 version. There is usually a sale with substantial savings around new Year, so you've just missed that frown. If it's vocal pitch correction you need, you'd be better off with Melodyne. The basic version is $99. It's easy to use and the results are very natural.

Hi Gavin,

I gotta admit while forst looking at the title of your song--I almost didn't listen to it,lol. That would have been a big mistake. It turned out great I must admit. Did I see wher you used BIAB to mix this? That came out really well--a lot better than when I tried that program, lol. Do you have BIAB for the IMAAC or regular pc? When i bought my version it was about 8 years ago for the MAC computer I dad--and I suspect that version ws missing a lot of options that the pc version probably had

Thanks Roger and Gavin for the input. I have about 20 projects I'm working on, Re-writes and some new. Financially I can't get all of them mixed by a pro. And one in particular "So long Saigon" which I wrote for a friend that served in Vietnam is outdated. no one wants to hear a song about Vietnam anymore. So, I thought I could at least get decent productions for the ones I don't send in. I really appreciate you guys getting back to me.

Thanks Roger. I'm not sure about the title. It' attention grabbing but maybe creates a false expectation for what the song is about and its tone. On the other hand, there's no other obvious title smile

I didn't mix it in BIAB. It has a DAW now but I don't like it, so I use the one I was using before I ever encountered BIAB, which is Mixcraft. I also use plug-ins from Isotope to simplify the mixing and mastering process to a level that someone like me can get to grips with.

As an aside, I was at a studio in Nashville last year and met one of the people whose guitar playing is used in BIAB. I felt like I already knew him LOL.

Thanks for the kind words, Paul. I get a bit of a kick out of unusual rhymes. And yes, that was a sax.

Glad you took a moment to read the story at SoundCloud. I do that for all my songs but I don't think many people bother with them. Too busy or too much taste LOL.

Hey Gavin,

What a great concept--unique way of expressing love and nice to hear something less trite and clever. You have a solid tune. I might like to hear the chorus (5th line) not resolve as quickly melodically, as the chorus break/lift is a needed separate itself from the verses--which are really good, both melodically and lyrically. Maybe pull you sax solo up 2db as it needs and deserves its solo space--all JMO.

A great listen!

Yeah Gavin...and great story to start a lyric on...but of course you needed a beer first. Anyone would in that condition

Thanks Eddie for listening and your suggestions. The sax solo was a little louder and I reduced the volume slightly because I thought it might hurt the ears. Maybe I was wrong.

Hey Gavin.....There is no right/wrong and different songs, different mixes are subjective in placing a solo. Years ago a former moderator of this group Colin Ward who is an expert lead guitar player, shared with me that individual instrument solos such as lead guitar, sax, flute, even keyboards when performing a solos should have the "center stage" taking the place of the front lead singer......thus they should be similar in volume else they sound like they are music in the rear. I personally agree with this production rule, though I"m sure there are exceptions, but think its a good general guideline as it makes the solo more climactic and a more effective "break" in the song. I also experiment with panning them about 20-30% left or right giving them a slightly different spot with a dedicated track rather than on their original instrument track location--feels like the sax player has moved upstage..... (saxes love reverb too--helps glue them to the mix)

Thanks Eddie. I agree with that general rule too. I went back and listened and think maybe the sax solo is a little lower than it should be in relation to the vocals. Thanks for taking the time to point it out. I'll also play around with your other suggestions regarding placement and reverb smile

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks John. The thing was that it might have taken a while to untie Gene and let him out of the van. We needed a beer quicker than that. In fact we had a couple more and forgot about him until the next morning.
