Seems like a lot of traffic. When I finally remembered my password (hadn't been on here for some time) Microsoft edge said I should change it that it had been compromised.... thought that was weird.

I used to enjoy watching those numbers. It was encouraging to see so many people pulling up my old posts.... Now, none at all.

Brian says Bots are a "Good Thing"... Hmmmm

"JAPOV" used to get a whole lot more hits on search engines as well. Now there's a lot more "copy-cats"...

It's not paranoia if it's true lol smile

This seems to be quite different then someone pulling up old posts to the front...no old posts are being pulled up now

What is happening is that pretty well all the anonymous visitors are looking at posts dating back 20 years and there are thousands of them...that is not a good thing....what are they looking for is what I want to know..there are now 5990 visitors...that is not possible when there would normally be 200 to 400 visitors and they would be viewing current posts....this is different...perhaps a moderator can look into it.

Yesterday I noticed there were over 2000 guests viewing mp3 feedback forum....now there are only 78 ...seems someone saw that I was questioning what was going on and stopped...why are there thousands of views of old posts back to 2002 ?? What info is being searched...right now mentor questions forum has 660 views and there are over 6000 guests...not possible... please let us know what is happening, Brian

In November, 2022, there were an estimated eight billion Humans in The Human Phenomenon.

The world-wide web is globally accessible.

The vast variation in numbers is indicative of something. It would take access to the metrics and some studious analysis to approach some comprehension of what is going on. I think I'll enter some stats over a little time and see if those radical increase/decrease numbers show up.

My friend just told me about getting pop-ups or news notifications about a household appliance she had just been talking about on Messenger.
You're watching your TV. Your TV is watching you.

93 robots.

12:42, PM, EST, 6010 and 92. LOL

12:29, AM, 1/17/23. 5,104, and 127 . Robots are up late. If anyone can explain what robots are, do it. I assumed its search engine stuff, running around finding hashtags or tags that might connect to searches, searchers.

FYI, relax.

The traffic is a result of actual minimum activity being surpassed finally since we restarted. Thanks to Gary Andrews in particular. New content on all the boards plus robot indexing has kicked our traffic back up. There's no hacking as we are not a worthy target. We have had a max of 37K+ on here at peak in 2020. Since then things crashed, in part due to Covid. Contrary to popular belief it did not increase numbers for much of anything. People's interests are too diversified and networks who expected to see ratings soar did not. Then we were down for almost 10 months. We came back on line but had disappeard as a site to all the webcrawlers known as "Bots" or here as "Robots." They are a VERY good thing as that means they are indexing our site for search engines.

Because we are add free, and our site has existed since nearly the dawn of the open internet, we are a trusted source in terms of search results. Why? Because we have never once attempted to game the system or "optimize" anything. That is a big bonus. Optimization is short term and must be repeated regularly because algorithms like passwords (if you are smart) must change very often to stay ahead of cheaters. But our site is indexed as reliable because no manipulation has ever gone on and that matters. I am not chasing ad revenue, or I would likely HAVE to optimize. 5K is a fraction of what we used to have. We averaged well over 25 million visitors a year, over 2 million a month and over 500K a week. At peak around 2009 we averaged a million+ a week.

So 5K? We have a ways to go. But it is getting better. I am starting to see new registrations finally. Not a ton, but a trickle. I am hoping to start a songwriting project here which might bring us some new people as well. Please welcome them in when you see someone new post (who isn't a spammer). Thankfully very few of those ever leak in.

This traffic may improve if we can start having over 20 registered users on average and posting something at any given time. I saw 31 on here at once yesterday. That was really nice to see. We used to have 500+ at a time that were registered.

Oh, and the old posts make perfect since if they are the result of web searches. It would be stranger if it was all new topics. If you folks post more topical content, that might help as well. You see our highest viewed pages, all mainstream stuff within the posts.

It doesn't help that the newer people coming into the Internet, (under 30) are increaslingly completely ending all contact with web sites such as these. It is all the TIK TOK 30 second attention span generation. Anything you have to look for, you have to actually PARTICIPATE in, do any sort of work at all, is considered as antique as rotary phones, if they knew what those were.

I think we are sort of the end of the line as people actually interested in any of this. We've seen it in Nashville, as the search for education of any kind outside of the $40,000-$50,000 a year colleges no longer exists, except the colleges indoctronating them and guess what THEY push? The 15-30 second Tik Tok world. So we probably are going to have to be content with what we have as one by one like recent members, people either die off or just age out of the equation.

We are the Dinosaurs folks. Welcome to Jurrassic park.

Dinosaur, antiquated, Jurassic, obsolescent...for sure.
Still breathing is a plus though.

Somewhat related is the "Likelihood to Commit Suicide SCALE"

If a young woman/girl in her late teens or 20s was presented with a YouTube video of me singing and playing...
And then the presenter offered her a dilemma...
"Either have sex with him or kill yourself. Which will it be?"

My marketability as a musical artist is tightly correlated with the rate at which young women would choose to off themselves.
Vegas has it at a 100 percent probability.

even before listening they have to get past omg-odwgs ...after which her sensory synapses move on from instinctive vernacular to is the old dude with guitar singing any good?

on guitar I mean.

though there may be a number of them thinking any good sexually...the Law of Large Numbers makes that so

guess the message is work on getting the sample size up

Interesting analysis, Marc, and unfortunately, very true. The question I have.... Is there anything salvageable here and can JPF morph into something new and what might that be? I would like to hear from you, and other members on this matter if possible.

Hello,

I don't know what could interest these people, and don't think it's this site or any one particular site, I think it is the common mentality of Generation Z and X. They have less than no interest in anything that came before their time, or doesn't have anything to do with them. Something a lot of us have noticed who are aging (I turn 65 this year) are seeing in overall life. As older people are getting their affairs in order, re-organizing houses, belongings, etc. and are wanting to see who they'll leave things to, NO ONE WANTS IT. Those old collectables, family heirlooms, etc. their decendants, children, grand children, etc. Don't want anything.
There is an overall movement afoot worldwide that younger generations want to have no possions, houses, cars, (the evil of humanity) jobs, etc. John Lennon would be pleased. They look at EVERYTHING THAT HAS COME BEFORE THEM AS EVIL, AND MUST BE DESTROYED OR DONE AWAY WITH. So a visit to any dump site will find tons of furniture, clothes, household items, etc. piled up.

If you want to talk about LIFE IMITATING ART, you can look at the 25 year old trend of NOT OWNING MUSIC.And NOT PAYING FOR IT. First it was file sharing and then comes streaming. People pay a small fee and get whatever they want, whenever they want it, for FREE. Streaming is basically doing that. Small streaming fees, cover HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF SONGS. And the royalty checks of hit writers reflect it. The only people making anything are SOCIAL INFLUENCERS, wherever that came from.

So, as far as places like this site, I do believe there will be an audience for it, people being able to FIND it or anything, is the problem. Most of the people today making any money from music, are building their own followings which maybe smaller, but hopefully loyal. For now.

My personal opinion is that the shorter attention spans and the ready at your fingertips ability to get anything anytime, simply renders anything you actually have to work for, extinct. There will be members like you see here, sticking with it, some will pony up some money to help keep it going, Brian tirelessly working, and trying to spread the world any way he can. There will always be someone looking for golf lessons, or things like music related sites, but they will be fewer in overall number. You hope everyone can keep their costs as managable as possible.

In my own world, it's quite weird. When I got into the teaching/mentoring element, there were a lot of workshops, and things nationwide (and in Canada) that were interesting in having myself and others like me to their groups. Most of the hit writers starting getting out of the actual writing world and into things like studios, publishing, and other things, as well as other non-music related businesses. Then many, I'd say most, of the writers who were successful in the 90's and early-mid 2000's started leaving town, and issuing the the artist/writers we see now. I personally started seeing less and less people interested in their home town workshops, and wanting to come to places like Nashville, where they would be involved with someone like me.
Now, I'm actually "semi retired" but busier than I've ever been. I've got more people trying to book me and actually turning people down. And the people I am working with are actually older, more settled, than before. The younger ones don't care.

So I really think we are in the decline of the professional side of music in exchange for the "everyone can do it" and more of the "no one will pay for it" at all.

In sites like this, if they can find something that interests them, possibly you might get a little more interest, but long term membership, I just doubt it. That says nothing about who is here, what they are trying to do. It's just the nature of "everyone can do anything they want anytime they want" mentality. I actually believe now we have more people DOING music than actually LISTENING to music.

I could always be wrong, and would be glad if I was. But it's not what I'm seeing. As I'm aging out too, it won't matter for long. I hope there is some people that carry on, but if there isn't, so be it. Everything has a life cycle. This one might just be running it's course.

Real good read, I have antiques, coin collections, some family heirlooms from the 1800's and my kids don't know they exist. I tell them to go through this stuff when I pass especially the coins, but they don't care. The digital age came, and music and musicians weren't ready for it. Used to be I'd buy an album check out the artwork, liner notes and who played on the tracks. I read every word on the product. Now kids just stream, go from one thing to another, don't even know if most have any favorite artists or not. They only listen to new stuff and that's all they check out.

Having said that I have no problem with INDIE music as it has allowed some great artists to get exposure. But has saturated the market and that has turned to streaming now. Heck kids don.t even have physical copies of the games the play on their X-boxes , it's all downloads.

You tell ME what they are viewing since you say you know it isn't real? Gary went through and posted new content on every board. So the webcrawlers came in and indexed it and we started getting google referrals. I checked last time we had 5K with 31 active users and they were coming from keyword searches primarily. Bots show up as bots. No one is gaming the system. The traffic seems to only happen when we've have sustained periods of 20+ people on line. But as activity drops, so does the traffic and if no one interacts with any of Gary's content, all the traffic will disappear.

I know folks have been asleep but we used to have 500+ registered users and 25K visitors nearly 24/7. Being down for 10 months is a death knell for most sites. It will take sustained traffic and activity by those of you posting for the traffic to keep getting referred, otherwise it will fade away again.

Just now we had 9 people online and we have crashed all the way down to under 200 visitors. Hopefully if we can get 30-40 people on here regularly, we will see numbers go back up. If you folks that ARE here would respond to some of Gary's posts and each others it would also help.

Traffic is ALWAYS a good thing. This panic seems bizarre to me.

By the way, Stephen McDonald has donated $100 to our upcoming Song Project. If we have at least 10 songs following the project guidelines, we will give out that money to be used towards a demo. He is stepping up to try and improve traffic.

Young people today don't want responsibility any more. They'll work their regular hours on the job (if they have a job) but don't want over time, it'll interfere with their play time or partying time. They would rather rent than own anything, no responsibility again. This will be the generation that will gladly accept the Great Reset idea of world government. You'll own nothing but you'll be happy. That is until they realize that the government owns them. Millions of jobs go unfilled while millions go unemployed, something doesn't sound right with this picture but it is a reality.

The reason is that no one interacted with the new content. Gary posted on every single sub-board, for the first time in years in many cased. The webcrawlers came in and indexed the site, but our little spike in people visiting (I personally invited nearly 100 former top posters to stop in) has dried up and so has our traffic.

We can see where traffic comes from. There is no money in, nor reason for, random traffic. I worked my ass off to get people to stop in, and quite a few of them did. That woke up our standing in google after dormancy and what happens? Everyone freaks out like chicken little that there's an invasion of some unknown beings! Damn, I am dumbfounded by the reaction. Dovetailing what Marc Burnett said (which I agree with for the most part) people are also in CONSTANT FEAR OF EVERYTHING! There was a time when the regulars here would invite the lurkers to join us and give them a reason to do so. Instead, the one active post is everyone in FEAR that something TERRIBLE must be happening.

You know what IS terrible? Living in fear. Sadly everyone under 30 is wrecked with fear. But it appears adults are also right there with them. I know many young parents who have their kids terrified of their own shadows. There was a time when adults soothed the fear of the young. Now they just enhance it.

Guess what? It is a fact, we are ALL going to die. Sadly we have lost 6 long time JPF members in the past month, 3 from this board and 3 from the Active part of the Organization that most of you are oblivious to. Our youngest artists are now hitting their mid 30s. I recall when Chris Young and Kacey Musgraves BOTH posted here are pre-teens!!!! Now they are the old veterans of Country Music. Kasey is 34 and Chris is 37!!!! When they started here over 20 years ago (Chris when he was 12, Kasey when she was 13) we were the most cutting edge musician site in the world and by far the largest music organization in history. They were rarities as most JPF members never visited this board just as most board members never attended an event or entered our music awards or went to local chapter meetings. But they are definitely our two biggest message board success stories.

That is because they had parents who came here for reliable help. We had a lot of long time educators and coaches volunteering. I still had them in the mid 2010s but there were not enough people participating to justify their time here. Harriet Schock (#1 for That ain't no way to treat a lady) and Alan O'day (#1 Undercover Angel and #1 Angie Baby as well as the classic Rock and Roll Heaven) used to critique lyrics and answer questions in real time here long before YouTube and CellPhone Cameras etc. But participation among board users just was never great. When we did a Lyric Category and had 1000's of Lyrics submitted and then did judging on this board, nearly all the entrants came from the non-board members. Our mentors stuck to live events where we would have 50+ musicians show up any night of the week in any city we visited.

So there ARE plenty of musicians out there. There are plenty of people searching music sites. There are plenty of lurkers. But no longer will people sign up by registering. Most companies pay Facebook or Apple or Google and let people register through them with a single click to get people registered. I can't pay 100K to activate that ability. And without activity, the visitors will crash back down to a trickle.

So we will give this song collaboration a try. Someone will win $100. (well, whatever the amount is AFTER Paypal took their cut). I got 65 JPF volunteers from our facebook pages. I think we got less than 5 from here. But if we can at least get 20 to co-write 10 new songs together, maybe it will spur something positive on.

No Brian.
It's the Rooskies! I know it is. You know it is. They're everywhere. Undermining everything. They're here on this site! Hillary would be in her second term and everything would be perfect if not for their omnipresent meddling.

That being said...reach in your meds cabinet and pull out a bottle of chill pills and take a couple.
"CONSTANT FEAR OF EVERYTHING!" is a bit over-the-top given the context, don't you think?

One possible diagnosis is that you are manifesting an irrational fear of being in fear. wink

Fear not. I am here to help.

I enjoyed just a taste of that notoriety myself 20yrs ago...

Don't you see Brian? Google, and the like, are "indexing" DIY music sites like this "OUT" of their mainstream search engine algorithms... in favor of TIK-TOK. N-O-N-E of the music sites out there are getting any traffic. Unless you know the name of a particular site, you can hardly even find them. You used to be able to simply search "home recording" and literally get 500K hits, then you'd have to sift through all the trash to find sites like this. At least, that's how I did it back in the day...

It's not for a lack of interest Brian... MAB and I have been arguing that DIY musicians and songwriters have outnumbered the "Pros" 1,000,000,000/1 for MORE than 20yrs now... Marc has always blamed the internet for the death of the music industry, but I've always argued that it's for reasons other than sheer numbers. "The Powers That Be" have been trying to control and regulate information on the internet since day one. Hell, IT WAS ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR MILITARY USE! "Tagging" and "Encryption" are far from new concepts....

Knowledge has always been power, and now, power is truly global. The children are being "trained" to ignore history, and have obviously been instilled with a gleeful disdain for established authority... TicTok, TicTok...

No Tony.
I told you already. It's the Rooskies.
We are all Rooskie pawns in their game of world domination.

Ukraine is making that a little bumpy at the moment. No plan is ever perfect.

One fear that I do have....(hijack alert)
If Biden sends a bunch of Abrams to Ukraine, I'm going to buy a real-deal gas mask. You see the connection? Abrams? Abraham?

My point is that there is a realistically possible road to Armageddon teed up now. I know how much you want to see Armageddon, but I don't want you to have it. Sorry.

I hope that nobody is going to pull out nukes in a war over the most corrupt country in all of Europe.

Do you know where I can get a good gas mask? And something that will prevent my skin from melting? wink

I don't know if i would put the entire blame on the Internet. The Internet has expanded what everyone in life experiences, so there are plenty of good things with it. I would mostly put the blame on HUMAN BEHAVIOR. When everything in life is made incredibly easy, delivered to your phones or computers, and you are able to be involved with a very simple click of a button, that leads to apathy, lazyness, sloth.

My observations come from personal experience, not only in Nashville, but in the overall world at large. From Reality television shows like American Idol and the Voice, to the business, to the very act of songwriting and performing, people are just in a "whatever I want to do when I want to do it, how I want to do it" with no sense of actually EARNING anything.
When you can WRITE SOME WORDS, THROW IN SOME BEATS, A FEW CHORDS, OR SIMPLY NOTHING AND RAP IT OUT, video yourself on a camera phone, and put it on literally thousands of Internet platforms, and SOMEONE clicks on a "like" or "Views" there is no skill required. You just do it.

On the 'professional side" everything gets dumbed down and the newcomers coming into this get lazyier and lazyier. But it is endemic in everything. The Culture, education, entertainment, you name it.

In the end, personally there is nothing I can do about that .I am fortunate to have had a pretty good run at all this and I sort of just continue on whatever it is I do until no one seems to want that any more, perform when I'm asked, educate people when I can. and just sort of continue on.
About all I will do. The rest of it all will have to either take care of itself or not.

MAB

That is being turbocharged right now. AI.
Dictate a few meandering thoughts into a computer microphone.
Tell an AI app to construct a country ballad

Presto...a country ballad, and probably a pretty good one that will get better as time goes on.
Letter to a relative, eulogy, thank you note etc etc etc

The immediate concern is students having their term papers written by AI.

Can only wonder what will happen to the humans when AI does most everything.
And music...its seems to be narrowing to performances. Machines can create the songs. When people want "live music" on a Saturday night, that requires a human...for now.

MAB

Lol... But, you make that sound like an unfortunate side-effect.
THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PLAN!

Dumb sheep are easier to manipulate and control, Marc. Especially if you can fool them into "feeling good" about it. Is there any mental state or emotion that's easier to ratchet up than teenage rebellion?

Main Stream Media, "THE NEWS", has always been a very influential and powerful tool. What better way to spread "THE NEWS" than to allow children, who have already been deprived of any moral guidance or training, to entertain each other?

The "World Wide" consolidation of powers is an undeniable trend, Marc; And, if you don't believe the powers that be are using the main steam media to that effect... then you're a victim.

Sorry, but it's irresponsible to simply wash your hands and say, "The business is what it is..."

Yes. As I understand it.

That American ambassador with the English accent that testified against Trump in the impeachment hearings (as I recall) stated that Ukraine had applied for membership in NATO but had been declined pending their ability to clean up the corruption in their government. Check me.
She despised Trump because he had dumped on her, and she was providing testimony in order to convey her point that he was menacing their independence and survival by blackmailing the helpless little government, yet when asked, she said that it was too big of a cesspool to let in NATO. (Paraphrased)

Not an endorsement. If there is a more corrupt country in Europe...glad I'm not a citizen.

Then there are issues with the Warsaw Pact and subsequent agreements.

With this situation... we arent tempting a proxy war in some endless sand pit in a place that very few people could find on a map. (Afghanistan, Reagan, Stingers)
We are tempting a war over a country that BORDERS a competitor country that has a nuclear arsenal that rivals ours. And the two countries have a long intertwined and twisted history, (eastern provinces etc)

Other than Japan, the only time that I can remember sweating that the world would war with nukes was when the USSR loaded up Cuba as a counter to the US loading Anatolia somewhere. It seems that the closer the proxy wars come to the actual borders of the superpowers involved, the more fearful the threat.

Is Ukraine worth that level of threat to the average citizen of the United States? Not this one.
Comparing Putin to Hitler and the Nazis in the 1930s?...Nazis did not possess nukes.

I'm not terrified. This afternoon I'm gonna go get a beer and think about something else, but it is disconcerting that the pieces are being moved into place to make a catastrophe possible.

And there you have my take fwiw2u

Search results SHOULD be all over the map. If someone searches "Songs about Loving to Fish" and in 2004 someone posted a lyric about "I love fishing" then that is the page they will go to. It is so simple. New posts don't bring in traffic unless the info within comes from a search. With 100's of millions of pages of text on this site (if you printed them all out) that is a lot of random stuff that might show up.

I can see where a visitor was directed from.. a search result, another page link, or direct url etc. Most of that traffic was being directed by GOOGLE SEARCH. If it is from a search, that means Google was bringing results from our board which has been indexed over and over and over for 25 years. All those millions of pages of text can produce search hits.

Of course it is up to Google's Algorithm to decide if we are a reliable site. It ebbs and flows and has for years.

Gary and I have been working to pump up traffic. He is posting content all over the site. It triggers "Activity" on the site which was completely down for 10 months. So the unknown algorithm decided to send us some traffic. It produced 25 new members as well. That is more than the last 14 months COMBINED!!!! (Including the 10 we were down).

Those new registered visitors plus new posts, plus we had a day where we averaged over 20 registered visitors on the site at all times. That hasn't happened since before the shut down. We were averaging single digits most days.

I got over 100 Top posters to log in that hadn't in years in many cases. Some posted, some just checked out what was going on. But that also likely triggered some criteria (it is all a secret that people make and spend millions trying to figure out) for Google to send us some traffic. Unfortunately the traffic didn't stay on the site long enough for it to sustain the traffic and now it is back down.

I got literally panicked emails from people fearing we were hacked because we had some traffic. I have been monitoring this site for nearly 25 years. We used to average WAY more traffic than what we had last week. But it always goes through ups and downs. We enjoy the traffic when it comes.

I am hoping to get double digit new people to participate in our Songwriting project. Unfortunately only a couple of regulars even showed interest. Nevertheless, if we can get 20 people to participate in it, we will move forward and see where it takes us.

On the 'professional side" everything gets dumbed down and the newcomers coming into this get lazyier and lazyier. But it is endemic in everything. The Culture, education, entertainment, you name it.

I did exactly that. I asked AI to write lyrics "in the style of X" and on the subject of Y" and almost instantly it wrote out completely original lyrics and in truth, every single one of the 10 I played around with were good enough to make a song out of and in some cases likely could be tweaked into a good song. AI is that advanced. I typed in Prince, The Cure, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith etc. and it did an amazing job of getting the vibe of something they might have written. And you can keep refining it and get it to a surprisingly accurate place.

I got 4 emails/pms and 2 Messenger Notes saying the site was hacked or broken. I won't out the people unless they want to, as some are ON THIS POST! That is 6 different people! Then comments here also seem very concerned about it. Just read it. Please tell me what bad thing happened?

What was going on is SEARCH RESULTS! Note to ALL: Most of the "unregistered" viewers here are coming off a search result, then exiting after seeing that one page. About 10-20% are surfing newer posts because they like reading the site. The rest are just random SEARCH RESULTS. I don't know how many more times I have to say it! Only 10-20% visit more than 1 page per visit. Even registered users online rarely read more than a handful of posts max per visit. Welcome to the internet.

@Brian Austin Whitney

Hmmmm... So, if I'm understanding you correctly Brian, if this site gets 3000 search result "hits", that doesn't necessarily mean we have 3000 anonymous viewers. In fact, only a fraction of those "hits" even bother navigating to this site. Is that right?

And some navigate here willingly in their spare time or less

WRT to amateur musicians..tech and the internet are the great levelers and allow people to get things before eyeballs cheaply

So yes the amateurs talented and less vastly outnumber the professionals who vie for cultural relevance through their stories and personas..

But unlike the pros who actually live the perks and warts and all life, the amateurs can only be said to dabble.

That's me.
