A few years back I used to post here quite frequently. It's been a while but it feels good to finally have some time to spend enjoying music again! I've bounced back and forth with a few different versions of this song and have recently added piano to kind of fill out some empty space, So, My questions are, does the piano work and if so, should it be louder in the mix. When I was recording it i thought the volume was fine but hearing it on soundcloud I'm thinking maybe it should come up a bit. At least in the intro. Any thought about this or any other aspects of the song would be greatly appreciated! https://soundcloud.com/user-655800373/whenever-our-hearts-beat-the-same-revisedWhenever Our Hearts Beat The Same You’ve seen the worst of me it’s true An understand that I won’t change No one knows you like I do You’re unpredictable and strange You don’t my friends or where we go Or care too much for clothes I wear Can’t stand to watch those daytime shows You make me watch and you don’t care Chorus: So what is the attraction? Can someone please explain? This undeniable reaction Whenever our hearts beat the same Tell me why do our hearts beat the same You like sports, that would be great If I were born my fathers son I seldom do appreciate The kind of things you think are fun You like walking on the sand Soft candle lights… a perfect day I like listening to the band Playing loud and staying late Chorus: So what is the attraction? Can someone please explain? This undeniable reaction Whenever our hearts beat the same Tell me why do our hearts beat the same Repeat Chorus

Great song Tom. It all sounds good to me although you could maybe drop an instrument here and there for variance.

Hi Tom, The alternation of G and GMaj7 chords has a very interesting obsessional side and your voice revolves around it with great accuracy and finesse. Kudos to you!

Great tune Tom!
To answer your question, yes I feel the piano should generally especially in places as piano is definitely an instrument in a mix that needs to have clarity else it will muddy your other instruments--not that yours sounds muddy. I think the key to having clarity with your piano is look at your guitar tracks which you probably have panned far L & far R for a good wide stereo sound. Experiment panning the piano a little more mid L or mid R and EQ with cutting out the lows with mild compression, mild reverb keeping sound more up front--possibly automate (volume) the track where you want the piano to come more forward.....maybe stronger at intro to launch song then pic your spots. If you have two guitar tracks, lower the volume or automate the track where your piano is panned--giving more space for the piano in those spots. I think piano makes a great outro as well. Just food for thought--you have a good arrangement for sure. I like what Vic said about featuring the instruments a bit--so I guess I may be saying the same thing, just a bit more verbose!
A great listen, and nice vocals mate!

MFB,
Yes, it's an age old story that is difficult to put a new spin on. But I'll keep trying anyway! LOL! Thanks for listening!

Hey Tom,
It's fun yet so challenging to re-work older material...I like the feel of the tune...Now to your question...
I probably would've waited to bring in the piano...I'd like to hear the acoustics carry the first verse as you don't "need" that piano yet...
Piano volume to me is about right...In fact to bring it up would throw the mix off...
The Acoustics are the lead instrument so the piano should come in and out...You wanna notice it in spots, not through each bar...Which is what you have now...
The mix defintely could use a few dynamics...But that is arrangement choices....Needs a break-down somewhere
Welcome back

Lovely song - great hook - and you respect it throughout. I like Vic's suggestion - maybe drop an instrument at some point = gets pretty busy in places. Great vocals BTW
cheers Paul
