The thread about "songs that made you cry" made me think of this song, but then I said hell this makes me happy not sad.

One of the finest songs, in my opinion right up there with the best ballads, but its one of The Who's least known tracks. Really all Pete Townshend he sings it as well as plays the uke. Great strings too

Such a beautiful song, and as i scroll youtube I see Pearl Jam and others have covered it, so it's not as forgotten as I thought. Dont know if this will take off as a thread or not, i have others

Once in a dream
Far beyond these castle walls
Down by the bay where the
Moonlit water falls
I stood alone while the minstrel sang his song
So afraid I'd lost my soul
There in the fog his song kept calling me
Leading me on with its haunting melody
Deep in my heart a voice kept echoing
I knew I'd soon be wandering
Far beyond these castle walls
Where the distant harbour meets the sky
There the battle raged like hell
And every dove had lost its will to fly
Far beyond these castle walls
Where I thought I heard Tiresias say
Life is never what it seems
And every man must meet his destiny

A classic yet mostly forgotten or not known at all. Daltrey did a horrible cover imo. Great songwriting and arrangement. Lots of dynamics, beautiful musicianship. It has it all. His self titled album and the follow up, Resolution, are must listens imo.

Wow, great tune never heard of it. I dont listen to much Daltrey solo, Townshends stuff is amazing. I did love Daltrys solo Under A Raging Moon, and an album youll find in a discount rack, called rocks in the head, Every song is good and he wrote many of them, co writ.

I agree, his cover of this not as good.

I bought The Who By Numbers back in the 70s and this is the song on the album that has stuck in my mind more than any of the others.

Well, since FD started this.... Meeting Across The River, one of the most underrated Springsteen songs. It's buried among all the better known songs on Born To Run but when I heard it the first time I loved it from the first note. For sheer atmosphere, it's hard to beat. As far as I can remember, it's the only Springsteen song to really feature the trumpet like this.

Who by numbers has so many great songs, slip kid and squeeze box, but are not considered in their greatest hits. However much I booze, dreamin from the waist, just some really solid songs, they just dont get the fanfare Baba Oreilly or My generation get.

Meeting across the river almost didnt make the album! That awesome trumpet is Randy Brecker legendary jazz trumpeter, incredible parts. Puts you right in that scene

The whole BTR album had many sit in pros like David Sanborn and Brecker, they wanted the album to be great, His first two albums didnt sell.

Thats one of my favorite songs out of his whole collection. The mystery of it, whats this guy up to, what he is trying to do. Great lyrics and of course the music...

Another vastly under-rated artist who had so many great tunes is Graham Parker. Growing up, Graham Parker and the Rumour's Squeezing Out Sparks was one of my favorite albums. Wore out the grooves on it. The lyrics hit hard. Parker has said it is neither pro life nor pro choice. It is about simply being involved in that decision making process. A very underrated tune - You Can't Be Too Strong.

Looks like we share a brain. I'm a huge Graham Parker and the Rumour fan. Howlin' Wind is one of my most played albums, although my favorite song is probably "Fool's Gold" on "Heat Treatment."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJRosJqpoog

I saw him in concert in Edinburgh many moons ago. Fantastic live performer.

There's a Springsteen connection too. The Boss called him "the only musician he would pay to see perform" and, happening to be in the same studio at the same time, recorded backing vocals on "Endless Night."

Graham Parkers Local Girls, is a favorite of mine. He has alot of great tunes.

But while were talking about beautiful songs, and such, how bout a balls out rocker? This was a staple on WDHA radio, local Jersey radio for probably 6 months, until it disappered from radio and so did the band disappear.

But if this song dont wake you up, at least after the soft intro, you aint waking up! Love the intensity and the ripping guitar solo. Seriously in a time and age where nothing disappears, this song managed to. Hard to find it anywhere.

Gotta mention Willie Nile..... By far the best singer songwriter from new york, not named Paul Simon or Billy Joel.

His 2006 album Streets of New York, was an absolute masterpiece, and if I could have an album of my own that was as good as this, I could die happy. Even though he is largely unknown. Just incredible songs, rockers, ballads, folk, everything

Never got to meet Willie, but I did meet his bass player a much younger guy named Johnny Pisano. Its the album I wish I could make if I had the chance...

I dont know how Willie Nile is not a massive Rock Star, hes basicly an indie....

The entire album is unreal, but these two stand out, "askin annie out", and "The day I saw Bo Diddley in Washington Square"

I love Willie Nile. Interestingly you didn't mention my favorite Willie Nile album ... "Golden Down." Love the title track and "Poor Boy" especially.

Another New York artist that I always thought was vastly under-rated was Garland Jeffreys. Had a minor hit with "Wild In The Streets."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RzBZsOeqOQ

My favorite album of his was Escape Artist, in 1981. Favorite track off of the album is "Modern Lovers." They all are great though. There is even a great cover of 96 Tears.

GM, i like Golden Dawn too, and his first album, its just to me the 5 straight albums,

Beautiful Wreck of the world, Streets of New York, House of a Thousand Guitars, The Innocent Ones, and American Ride,

I dont think you can name any band, besides The Beatles that made 5 consecutive albums THAT good before. He tailed off a bit recently, but those 5 are some of my all time favorites, but nobody knows, glad you do!

All Willie Al day today, Still amazing how this guy is not a major rock star, he's as good or better than bands that filled arenas and football stadiums.

NO justice....

Always cool song titles too, enjoy three more
