Hi,

I connected a TASCAM TM-80 Microphone to my TASCAM DP-32SD (including turning the Phantom Power button on),
but I have to turn the TRIM knob all the way to MIC before I can actually record vocals, but they're muffled.

Am I missing something? Is there some box I need to connect it to first?

In my experience, phantom powered mics tend to be "hotter", more sensitive and pick up more ambiance, and a bit more compressed but not louder. Phantom powered mics are great for acoustic instruments but can be problematic for singers depending upon vocal style. You generally don't want to hold a phantom powered mic to your chin

Hi JAPOV,

This is my first condensor microphone. I bought a TASCAM DP-32SD, so I wanted to find an appropriate microphone for my voice.

I connected a dynamic microphone and got the same results.

I don't really have a vocal style. Mosty what I believe I'm doing is trying to create decent demos. For now, I just want to get to the point
where the vocals are audible. After that, I'll be wanting to tweak them so that I don't cringe (too much) when I hear them.

I'm looking at the article you pointed me to, especially since I want to be able to use the phantom powered one as it's best intended to be used for.

Yep, get yourself a pop-screen, set the mic 8-10" from your face, turn up the gain and Eq for vocals

Use a compressor/limiter to make up volume in your mix

O.K., I'll get a pop screen and try it the way you're suggesting. I really want to record my vocals using the DP-32SD. I want
to keep as much contained to that environment as possible, to keep things simple. Just toying with the gain and EQ settings
helped a bit.

I have no issues whatsover recording guitar on it. If I can just take your advice and get the vocals working, I'll be a happy camper!

Thanks for this tip too, JAPOV. At least I have some direction now. "Winging it" was fun for about 10 minutes.

Bear in mind, the further away you set your mic the more room ambiance it's going to pick up. That's why they call it a "studio" mic lol, you really need a completely dead space (or closet) to record vocals with a large diaphragm condenser mic. Personally, I find it a lot easier to record vox with a common stage mic; it's all about the compression and Eq either way, but the regular dynamic mic is a lot easier to handle.
