https://soundcloud.com/wabash-cannibal/old-vaquero-demoI don't recall who I wrote this with. My mind is gone. Old Vaquero Old vaquero Red dust on your straw sombrero Ain’t you weary of the rustlers and the rattlesnakes Find some shelter from the weather All these summers turned your skin to leather And how much more can your faded saddle take
Old vaquero Say farewell to that ranchero Can’t you see time is running low in your canteen For once don’t be stubborn mi amigo Find a senorita in Tampico Fence her off a grassy acre by a desert streamSo compadre…vaya con dios And may ev’ry morning find you giving thanks For you have crossed many a rio Knowing dust awaits you on that final bankOld vaquero Don’t you fret about dinero Prove to your grey mare that prayer and fortune will provide Ride across the wild Sierra Madres Find a mission with a faithful Padre Let him walk you in a white robe to a riverside
Old vaquero Say farewell to that ranchero Can’t you see time is running low in your canteen©2009 Robert George/etc with apologies

Nice write, couch, I really like the verses and gone are the days of the AABA song structure which I feel can still tell a very strong story song. The simple acoustic melody is perfect for this one. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, folks. The arrangement could use some fleshing out. An accordion, a tasteful trumpet. The AABA structure suits alot of songs but it's not easy to write.

It has a real old time feel to the music and to the lyric itself with its rhymes and mix of English and Spanish
Can't say I'm a huge fan of the faded saddle image as too stereotype but that time running low in his canteen is exceptional. Bravo
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

The AABA structure suits alot of songs but it's not easy to write. Yeah, I have a few songs in that structure. One I cowrote years ago, we re-did for sync. I'll have to share it sometime. And one was on Bill Scull's CD long long ago. I believe you had one on there too.

Bill had a cd? I don't remember that! What song did I have on there? That was 20 years ago.
I'm so ancient.
Sigh.
