I stopped watching hockey regularly decades ago, i wasnt and im still not able to keep up with all four major sports, too much work. im football and baseball these days.
But my brother tipped me off that Islanders were in the semis, and i started watching them in the playoffs. Exciting. Such a great game, with a surprise a minute, intensity of the goalie is something I love. A string of saves...
But my brother and I grew up Islanders fans,... in NJ, doesnt make sense, we were die hard Yankee fans, and we didnt like Rangers or Devils in hockey, we liked The Islanders. They had a hall of fame line at one time.. Trottier, Bossey, Giles, Potvin and Pearson, all hall of famers, so they were giants in late 70's early 80's
But im enjoying the heck out of the series, even though i honestly couldnt name 5 players in the league right now. Feel like my dad, who would have rathered watch, "Meet The Press" than ANY sports, including the superbowl!
But he used to take us to Nassau Colliseum to see the islander, quite a ride from Jersey, and it appears this is the last season in that building. piece of history.
Anyway, game 5 tonight, two more wins for either team to the Cup!

I used to believe in jinx's I used to have my own rituals that had no basis in reality, like...If I make the next three baskets of paper into the basket, then the Yankees will win tonight... lol, think they are stress reducers
Yeah it was basicly over in the first period. It';s ok, it's been back and forth all series. might go 7 games.
Im really a spectator, I dont even know whos on their team, aside a few guys by now.,
Havent watched a hockey game or series in a LONG time
I remember when dad took us to the games in long island, i was maybe 10, we got our first taste of how nasty new yorkers can be. One game the Boston Bruins were playing us, and Clark Gillies and Terry Oreilly had three fights in the same game, Clark Gillies won all three, and the crowd was chanting "oreilly sucks... oreilly sucks" Then he got tired of getting beat up so he started with gary howett, 5"8, and Howett kicked his butt too, so he lost 4 fights in one night...lol and he was one of the best fighters in the league.
And f bombs everywhere, I thought for sure my dad was gonna lecture us, and not take us any more, he was smiliing the whole time, said nothing...did you guys have fun? lol..... Good ole dad....

The big plus for the Islanders is their coach, Barry Trotz. He gets more out of his players than just about any coach in any sport. Reminds me of Scotty Bowman who was the greatest coach ever in the NHL It pains me to say that because I grew up hating the Habs

Yes Hockey it seems the coach is important. In some sports like Baseball and Basketball its all about star power and managing the egos.
Football and Hockey I think the coach can actually win you the game in some cases. I Know for sure in football that the right game plan can win you a game, you cant win every game on coaching, but how many times does a team still win that game when their starting quarterback is not playing, coach has to completely change how they will play.
And they can bring a struggling team success of a long period of time.
I think Trotts has done that for Islanders. They play well as a team at least from what ive seen.

Well it wasn't easy, but we forced a game 7. Nice OT win.
Dont get more exciting than that!

Nothing lucky about it at all, all workman like, gritty, hard earned. Were we watching the same game?

lol, never heard of it. I thought it was a combo of puck and lucky.
Anyway, what a great win. Total team effort, i hope i dont start watching Hockey again, I wont have time for music... lol
Game 7 will be tough in Tampa. And it appears there is no such thing as momentum in Hockey. One day you get shelled 7-0 next day you win a tough won in OT.
Looking forward to Tommorow night.

I'm hoping the Isles make it to the cup finals so I can cheer for Montreal and we can trash talk and everything Dom...

Well, frankly, my limited opinion is tonight is the tough one, if we get by tonight, we will win the cup.
Im a little ambivalent though, I have a song I wrote called "we havent had a winner in New York in a while" Its one of the tunes im working up as I type this.
And if the Islanders win, it would make that statement untrue, and probably force me to ditch the song.
But, I can also gear it towards baseball, which has been true since 2009.

Bummer Dom....guess we'll have to trash talk again elsewhere now that the Isles lost...but kudos to them by the slimmest of scores and those last few minutes were pretty exciting

Yeah always tough going on the road for a game 7. Proud of our effort, our goalie really came up big for us, but you have to credit Tampa, they completely shut down our offense, really couldn't get a clean shot on goal all night. That's what champions do. Tampa is dominating sports all around really, Bucs won superbowl, The Rays are very good in baseball, Lightning in hockey.
Well two pluses, I dont have to watch hockey now, at least not until Islanders are back in it, myabe next year...and it keeps my song alive....
