This Song is in memory of John Lewis, a civil rights activist and member of Congress. The words of the song came from what people said about him on his passing last July.

Any song with bagpipes is going to resonate with me smile That must be the Nova Scotia in you coming through. Nice simple message and polished arrangement that really suits the subject. I've never heard the expression "Rest ye long" before. Is that a local turn of phrase?

Real nice Steve....yes simple, easy message..but nice interesting music ...really like how the the bridge breaks..and that last note is so colourful...before coming back to the hook and going to the intrumental...every section works..

Vnorth,

Powerful tribute. Especially liked your drums and the panning of that mix--it gives action to the song. Bag Pipes always grab your don't they?

Thanks, Gavin, for your comments, most appreciated. Pretty well every word in the song comes from comments I heard from people speaking of John on TV and internet, including "Rest Ye Long". I've heard it before but I didn't come up with the expression for this song but based on his tireless work it is really appropriate.

The bagpipes go so well with this. Especially with the subject matter. I would have to think mixing bagpipes isn't the easiest thing to do. They sound well placed in this mix. The rest of the music is great also. Piano playing is outstanding in places and I really like how the instruments come in and out throughout the song.

Overall a really great piece!

Very nice tribute, very good full and crisp sound, since its not about somebody close id add that I think there may be too many rest ye longs... in there. I may have opted for more lyrics and less modulations.

personal preference.

I enjoyed the track!

Thank you, John, for the listen and comment. I really appreciate the "every section works" comment. When I first heard someone say"rest ye long" on TV, I said,OK that's the hook I wanted to use it throughout the song but I realized overuse might get boring. I think I overcame my problem by making each section of the song different than anything else in the song. The vocals are quite different between the 1st and 2nd verses, followed by a bridge and then the solo followed by V3 which was different than 1 and 2, The final section was completely different again. Doing a little modulation on a couple of notes gave it a different feel as well. I also wanted music to be more dominant and the use of a cool pad helped to make that happen. The bagpipes were the last piece I put in which seemed appropriate and filled out the music as well. The fellow I work with on all my songs, Jon Hemingway, is a high end singer, musician song arranger and engineer. He contributed so much to this process. His piano work in this song,IMO is so good.

Thanks s-e for the listen and comment. I'm a big fan of using toms in a song. They IMO give the song the lift it needed. I have used bagpipes in a couple of other songs. The provide a really nice background sound that makes it different than other fillers like strings etc.

Man on man Steve. I went back to this again to listen and I found you allow this to be downloaded !!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU! I did.

Now can I set this to a video?

See what I did here....we can do something similar for John Lewis as well....

Thanks for the post and your enthusiasm for the song, much appreciated. You must be reading my mind. Having run a video/film post production company in Vancouver, for 15 years, where we did many music videos for such singers as Jann Arden and Sarah McLachlan, I have always intended to put some of my songs to video. I started last year with this video ....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTwCQgGaGiY&feature=youtu.be .

I am just starting to do the next one for Rest Ye Long. Instead of creating a second video off the same song, if you want to send material to be incorporated into the video I'm working on, that would be great.

I viewed your video and it's interesting we both created something around MLK at about the same time.

Steve

Thank you for your take on last summer. It was raw, emotional time and it seems we both needed to express some of what we felt needed (re)saying.

And with your history... and seeing you have already focused on the idea....I expect you have a vision and whatever I might possibly add would be amateurish....I by no means feel I could meet "professional standards". So thank you for your kind offer..but I will see what you come up with for it

In the meantime I am recording songs I've written and learning more about smartphones and youtube. smile

Cheers

Hey Ricky, thanks for the listen and comment, most appreciated. Actually the bagpipes are a sample so mixing wasn't too difficult. I really like the piano work Jon did in this tune. Basically it was one take and a little tweaking. He is a superb pianist.

Everything you hear is a sample, Jon uses a Korg Triton but we seldom use the internal samples preferring to use others. We make good use of pads in most of the songs we produce and this one was no different. Jon is a great engineer and because he is so talented musically, it's just a thrill to work with him. We've been doing this since 2010 having produced over 40 songs in total. In those years no one else has ever been in the room. I do all the song writing and initial music with my D 18 guitar. Once we lay down a rough vocal/guitar track, we basically start with a blank page and fill it in together. The arrangement of the song is very collaborative. The end result is I think we put out some pretty good material. Each song takes about 30 to 40 hours to complete over 3 to 4 months.

Thanks, Fd for the listen and comment, most appreciated.

When I started writing the song I gave some thought to fewer rest ye long because it might sound too monotonous. I opted, instead, to have each section different than all others and placed emphasis on music over lyric. The lyric was created from things said about John at his passing. I think the modulations make the song stronger so they gotta stay. The bagpipes and the pad give a nice feel to the song.
