This is an 80s cover song I am working on. Just about finished. Mostly curious how the mix sounds to you guys? First use of home studio live drums! Thanks. The Promise by When In Rome Covered by RetroMatic https://soundcloud.com/user-322910118/the-promise

I really love that song, always think of Napolean Dynamite at the end. One of the rare synth pop songs I like
Nice job, i like your final chorus most, seems to flow best. Nice sound. Enjoyed.

Mix sounds great to me! Sometimes I think I'm getting the hang of mixing my own songs, and then I hear something like this, and well... I've got a long way to go. Nice work!

Thanks Fdemetrio.
I need to check but I thought the song at the end of Napoleon was Forever Young by Alphaville? (Another song I would consider covering) Maybe they played this song as well?
Thanks for the listen and comment!

It's part of Napolean Dynamite, that movie was a bonding movie for my nephew and I, so i remember it well. Forever young was played at the prom, but this was the ending https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azSxYbFovWo

Someone needs to break the sad news to When In Rome that this cover is better than the original. Just a way better feel. Great arrangement and really good vocals, outstanding harmonies. Props to you RL

Sounds fantastic through my headphones. Great production. By that I don't mean that it sounds like a professionally produced song. Professionally produced songs can still be crap. This sounds like it is done by a pro at the top of his game. I like the way it builds in intensity without actually hurting your ears. You obviously know what you're doing.

Thanks Rob L!
Steve - It was that you said "sad" news that really got me laughing. I think that's pretty funny! Thanks again.
Thanks Gavin. I don't personally feel like my mixing is that great but I must be getting better! I have to mention that I think the Slate vsx headphones are helping me a lot.

Ricky,
It sounds fantastic. Nice work here.
If I had any polish sug on your drum mix, possibly widen toms & maybe certain cymbal crashes a bit. Having said that a drum kit centered is more probably more natural and the balance is still good, but it is cool to hear "some" panning/widening with certain drum tracks if you have those mic'd drum kit parts on separate multi-tracks.
I enjoyed this!

Eddie,
Thanks for the listen and comments.
I'm recording the drums with 5 mics for now. They are on the snare and kick with 2 overheads and a room mic. I tried to get them wider in the mix but it didn't seem to work that well. I might need to add more mics to get that width but I also wonder if the overheads could be placed differently to help.
I'll be checking into it for sure!

I woulda bet good money that was a drum machine you're using, and not real drums. Woulda lost I guess...

Indifferent...
Ill have to listen with a better system when i get a chance, listening through small computer speaker with not much bass. drum software and machines are the norm now so it's not a knock to say they were used. When using a click track, it becomes more like a drum machine anyway.
I think it was that tisshhh sound of the snare, hats sound a bit robo too, but not in a bad way. sounds more electronic than real is all. Are you triggering with pads?

No. Real drum set. Just triggered the snare and kick to get a better overall sound. Hats are live as are the cymbals.

Well it's a synth pop song anyway, made to be electro. They probably used electronic drums on the original.
Yours is a hybrid of rock and synth pop.

Yeah that's kind of what I was going for. Take some of the older heavy synth/electronic songs and add real instrumentation.
This one came out good. We'll see what happens from here on out...
