Note to moderators : Do not mix with the Covid thread already in place. No political comment allowed. All medical comments welcome.

Hey All,

Well, it's been a few interesting days. As you guys know, we are a small island in the Pacific which has coped quite well with the current situation. Having not had a community acquired case for over a year, we are now faced with one case where a quarantine worker was infected by a guest and then went, with symptoms, to a funeral attended by over 500 people.

Result : Total lockdown of 2 cities.

I just wanted to repost the measures that have been put in place by the Chief Medical Officer, and the government, which may seem harsh, but have proved to be very effective both in Oz and NZ. Quote ....

A woman is a new COVID-19 case from Cunningham
High-risk businesses such as gyms, cinemas, bars, taverns, gaming centres cannot open for the next 14 days
Non-work gatherings of any size cannot take place anywhere. These gathering restrictions are nationwide
Fiji has another COVID-19 community case which has also resulted in the Health Ministry announcing new guidelines for the whole of Viti Levu while some guidelines remain for the whole country.

Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says after the announcement about the funeral in Tavakubu, Lautoka last Friday and Saturday, a family in Suva has come forward to let the health officials know that they had attended the funeral.

He says as of yesterday morning, one of these family members, a 40-year-old woman has tested positive for COVID-19.

The woman resides in Wainitarawau Settlement in Cunningham. She lives at home with her husband and five children. They are all in isolation at Navua Hospital.

Her family members have all tested negative for the virus so far.

From 10pm Tuesday through yesterday, the ministry has activated containment teams to establish a screening zone at the Wainitarawau Settlement.

Doctor Fong says the rules for the zone are simple: No one is allowed out. Those who live in this area are being allowed back in, but they must stay there.

They are screening every Fijian in that zone, and they will keep the area contained for at least the next 14 days.

He says the density of people living within the settlement make this area particularly high-risk for the spread of the virus, so they are not taking any chances.

Doctor Fong says they are still terming the Tavakubu funeral as a super spreader event.

He says this virus is as deadly as it has ever been.

Doctor Fong says it is more transmissible, and we must treat it more seriously than we ever have before.

If you were at the funeral in Tavakubu, either at the residence or at Peceliema Church, on Friday 16th April or Saturday 17th April and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has not yet contacted you, please call 158 right now.

Your life, and the lives of those you love, may be at-risk.

Please, pick up the phone and dial 158.

Although these measures are tough and severely restrict business, the vast majority of prople are adhering to them, knowing that a short term loss is far better than an ongoing loss.

I can only commend the CMO and the PM on fast and decisive action, which science has proven, will slow if not stop the current outbrake.

It's simple of course, as Fiji is an island and can easily maintain it's borders and still maintain a quality of life which supports all those in the community. Do I wear a mask ? Yes. Do I practice social distancing ? Yes. Do I stay at home as requested ? Yes. Is my business suffering ? Yes. Is it the best course of action on a medical and scientific basis ? Yes.

Are my human rights violated by these necessary measures ? No.

I agree what has been done because it is simply necessary. Perhaps if more nations had a more rational and inclusive approach, we can all get over this thing sooner rather than later.

cheers, niteshift

Seems like there's a much greater focus on "TESTING" where you're at. To me, that makes a lot of sense!

Yeah be safe Nite. Too bad about Fiji. I know it was being as responsible as it could be and their measures were working. Shows you what patient zero can do to a place

In Canada some provinces are in lockdown (including Ontario) and across Canada there are various stages of reopenings. No province is out of the woods yet

I've had my first jab of Phizer but the advice is to still socially distance, wear a mask, avoid gatherings of more than a few people....but like it has always been, that is to protect others as well as yourself.

I've had two pfizers as of about 4 weeks ago. It provides a great deal of emotional relief knowing that I'm vacinated, but questions linger about duration, this and that. So even though I have started going back to the gym after a year, I still exercise caution and watch where my hands go.

Regarding the gym, which is the downtown Y in Houston...

a couple of weeks ago, it was pretty empty when I first went back and used it at 11am on a weekday. Two days ago at the same time it looked like a pre-covid attendance. People seem to be getting their shots and moving on.

The 14 day moving average for the transmissivity rate in Houston is trending upward at 10.2% Because it is a 14 day moving average that number is up to 14 days old. I think that we are suffering the Spring Break spike as well as the consequences of a dropped guard.

The one case has now gone up to 19 in three days. It is worrying that the soldier in quarantine was immunised, and yet passed on the virus to a member of staff.

JAPOV, yes, mass screening and testing door to door.

We carry the app, as most folks do. Also, when you go to the supermarket, they take your name and number. This makes sense as if an infected person was in the store, they can easily contact trace.

I am hopeful this strategy will work, because if we get a larger transmission rate, the health services here will not be able to cope. We'll pray for the best possible outcome.

cheers, niteshift

Well, i think contract tracing is impossible to do. "somebody was at walmart two days ago, and you may have been exposed" Do yu really think anybody is going to turn themseves in, and go through all that hassle? They are going to avoid the situation and either wait it out, or ignore it.

I guess in theory it works, but if you cant get people to wear masks, social distance, and get vaccinations, then how can you expect them to cooperate with tracing...I dunno. Ive been around people who were coughing alot, and got mad when I even mentioned going to a doctor.

Whats concerning is New Jersey has many people vaccinated already and were still getting 3000 cases per day

Hey Fd,

Yes, I'd agree as regard to the vaccine. It works, but does not stop you from spreading the virus if you are infected. It simply boosts your immune system and very much lowers your risk of ending up in intensive care. In other words, it greatly reduces the death toll. It also very much slows down the transmission rate.

It is up to each community to decide which is the best course of action. I don't think there is any "best" course of action, but any measures which can reduce harm to others and is medically proven should be used.

Here in Fiji, it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, neither is it compulsorily to put the tracing app on your phone, yet most folks support the initiatives taken. I don't think it's about a cure, more about harm minimization.

cheers, niteshift

Another 4 community cases. All international and regional flights banned. Roadblocks everywhere, and only essential travel and services open. Masks mandatory. No church services or gatherings allowed.

It's a good move. If it's stopped within 10 days, the curfew will be lifted. If not, then another 14 days. No arrests for breaking the curfew, and most all agree upon the action taken. Here's hoping that folks will be sensible and protect their neighbors.

Hey Fd, yes, we're all hoping that will be the case.

It only took one small mistake in breach of protocol and that turned the whole place upside down.

The CMO and PM acted quickly and decisively and although the measures are tough, they are most probably the best course of action. Vaccine rollout has started, which certainly helps the situation, and being an isolated group of islands certainly makes containment procedures much easier.

I miss a meal and a drink at a bar, but it's a small price to pay to mitigate the situation There has been one bonus.... home delivery pizza shops are doing well. smile

Take care all.

Well, the situation has worsened. Now 50 cases, all in isolation, but 2 cases are contact untraceable. Hence, Suva to the south and Lautoka to the north have been put in complete lockdown from 8 PM last night. And that's complete. No supermarkets or any other shops open until Monday morning. No take out deliveries. A stay at home order is in place. This is in order to do house to house screening.

We are in a containment zone in Nadi, but cannot leave. No travel allowed, but we can go to the supermarket and order take out. You have to sign in, wear a mask and have the tracing app switched on on your phone.

It may seem extreme, but the case load has gone from one to 50 in 10 days. Vaccine programs have been rolled out. I hope they catch this thing, as Fiji only has a small and limited medical service.

Here's to another weekend of Netflix. smile

Stay safe.

cheers, niteshift

Is there any word about how many of those 50 had already been vaccinated?

I couldn't say, but the soldier who was the primary, or secondary source ( from looking after people in quarantine ) WAS vaccinated.

It is appearing that the vaccine will stop you from getting the disease, but how much it lowers the infection rate is yet to be determined. I'm quite sure it does reduce the transmission rate, but could not say by how much.

Regardless, if we can keep vulnerable people out of intensive care, it's all a bonus.

cheers, niteshift

My understanding is that even if you have been vaccinated, you can still get COVID, but the symptoms will be relatively mild and only a handful of deaths reported so far for those vaccinated.

Hence the requirement to continue safety protocols because you may get it and pass it on while still feeling fine

Regarding the posted transmissivity rate in Houston....

On 04/07, the 14 day moving average was 8.2. And had been trending downward.
on 04/21 (most recent average) the 14 day moving average is 14.7.

Doesnt appear to be over with, and the full verdict regarding the ramifications of the virus dont appear truly known....imo
I suggest caution.

Yes, I think caution is the best policy. Better to get it over with sooner than later.

Saying no political commentary on what has become a worldwide political issue doesn't cut it. I am merging all Covid discussions into one. Just letting everyone know.

Hey Brian,

Whilst I understand your point of view, if politics enters the discussion, it confuses a very serious medical issue.

Of course there are politics involved...... big time, on a global basis.

My concern is medical and I simply wish to say what is happening on the ground at a practical level in a small country in the middle of the Pacific.

There are medical issues, but then of course they relate to peoples lives, both their health and the economic impact.

Dr James Fong is the CMO here, and is being widely recognized world wide for his sensible and reasoned response to an acute medical problem...... regardless of politics. just Google his press conferences and you will see a man who is straight to the point.

Yes, Covid has had a huge impact on Fiji, yet everyone is working through it to get the job done.

This is, of course my own personal opinion, from a small isolated island. I wouldn't like this thread to be mixed up with the global issue as a whole.

I hope you understand my viewpoint,

cheers, niteshift

Well, things just got a lot worse. More cases and one more death.
Despite containment measures, it appears active in the community

Suva is in full lockdown for 4 days from tomorrow. Nadi, where we live is essential business only with outside movement discouraged. Curfew from 6 PM to 4 AM. Vaccination rollout is going well.

It appears it is spreading, as some folks are leaving their designated containment zones and traveling to see friends and realities, making contact tracing difficult. There are always those that will break the rules and make the situation worse for everyone.

Here's hoping this weekend's lockdwn, even though it might not be able to stop the virus, will at least be able to slow it down.

Stay safe.

cheers, niteshift

It seems to me that Fiji would be the perfect test site for the various vaccines available... Why hasn't the entire island been vaccinated already?

That's what we are working towards JAPOV.

As there are a number of vaccine candidates, and they are all provided by different donors, which one is best for the population as a whole ?

The Seychelles has vaccinated virtually their entire population, yet their transmission rate has increased by 20%.

Unfortunately, our strain is the double mutant strain from India, which in some ways is diverting vaccination attempts, and has a very much higher transmission rate.

If we don't get improvement in the coming days, the lockdown will be tightened further.

I agree with the CMO.... the virus has to have a human host to live, and social isolation may be the simplest and effective form of finding an answer. The medical staff are out in force, but as a small country we only have so many personnel, regardless of financial aid and logistical support.

Here's hoping ! Stay safe.

Thanks for posting Nite. Appreciate the look into your country's dealings with the virus.
In the states, they are repeatedly saying that the vaccines are effective against the various mutants. Please continue to let us know how that works out over there.

Bright spot...Texas had no covid relate deaths yesterday, per the morning news.

That's good news for Texas Sunset, as it's a huge State.

Only one more case here yesterday, 2 of the 51 cases have been put in ICU.

Vaccinations have already started. Oz and NZ donated 1.5m doses for a population of 900.00 so we are well covered. Logistically it's difficult as there are 333 islands in the group, some quite remote.

The take up rate seems to be popular. I get the logic here. If everyone is vaccinated, we can unlock the borders and the tourists will return Whether or not they bring in Covid then becomes a moot point.

There will be some small groups who will oppose vaccination but that's up to them to take their chances.

Stay safe.

cheers, niteshift

Well, things are fairly stable. The total lockdown has been lifted but we still have a curfew from 6 PM. All non-essential business is closed, and the containment zones remain in place.

A total of 62 cases, but the new ones are from the same households and have been in home quarantine. So, no new community transmission.

The lockdown seems to be working, and the vaccination rollout is working well. 14,000 swabs are being processed from the containment areas, and to date only 5 positives yesterday.

Schools have been closed for another month, so I think that indicates that the current measures may be in place for some time. An announcement will be made soon.

*sigh* More home delivered pizza, beer and Netflix for some time I think.

cheers, niteshift

Hey JAPOV,

I don't think the pizza joints need a stimulus package, they seem to being going full on, as are other restaurants which do take out or delivery. Going out for a meal or a beer is still banned.

I feel for the small businesses which have been forced to close ( also the hotels ) while the large supermarkets are reaping the benefits. There is an online system to apply to open, but I think it will take some time to implement.

Another 27 cases yesterday, so the numbers are steadily increasing. 9 at a Navy barracks, which does not look good for the future. Also, there are some who are breaching the containment areas and curfews, and spreading it further.

*sigh* Do I get a refund from Netfllix when I have watched all their movies ? smile

cheers, niteshift

I was thinking more along the line of "FREE GOVERNMENT PIZZA"! But the Dems here in the US probably wouldn't be able to decide on toppings...

Hey JAPOV,

Yes, free government pizza would be great ! , but here also, the toppings could not be agreed upon. smile

The situation has become steadily worse, but thankfully most cases are contacts of those already in containment. We have a couple of cases which have no particular contact with those already infected, which is of great concern.

The containment areas are still in place and you can enter a shop but must carry a phone with the bluetooth app turned on. Also wear a mask and practice social distancing. Curfew remains from 8 PM to 4 AM with essential businesses only open for business.

The bluetooth app has provided invaluable in contract tracing and has saved a lot of time.

Vaccination roll out is going well with a large take up.

Of course, there are some who will protest the rules and get arrested. About 50 a day.

Also of course, there is also some criticism from radical groups and misinformation on social media.

The Health Ministry is doing a great job, and the Chief CMO Dr Fong revises the situation daily depending what is happening on the ground.

With all due respect to Dr Fong, it is not up to HIM to make the decisions which I agree with. It is up to the situation on the ground, the advice of his medical team which he listens to, the data presented , knowledge we have learned over the last 2 years and advice provided by the WHO. 1.5 million doses of vaccines have been provided for a population of 900,000 from the Oz nd NZ governments, as well as financial assistance to roll it out, and financial economical support for the local community.

Dr Fong can only provide advice based upon medical and scientific evidence, and he has made the best possible decisions from a number of bad choices.

Those that criticize from an unfounded and ignorant position, usually to promote their own personal agenda, can only but hope that they are never placed in such a similar situation. It is far better to work together than to criticize those which are doing there best for the best possible outcome.

Although the pandemic has had a great economic toll, the consequences of not working together and letting this roll on with reduced oversight will only prolong the hardship already being experienced.

Bula vinaka Fiji, and keep a steady course.

cheers, niteshift

Ok, now I'm ANGRY !

We had 83 new cases yesterday, 11 without any known trace. The figures are growing exponentially on a daily basis,

Add to this that 47 people were arrested, most for breaking curfew or breaching containment zones. Most were drunk.

Then one lady who was positive decided to go to a funeral of over 100 people where such gatherings are banned,

There some who just WILL NOT LEARN,

Aghhhhhh....... all it means is that the lockdown will continue further until the idiots in the community take some self responsibility.

This is causing a great deal of harm, both socially and economically.

WAKE UP you morons. You are simply making the situation worse.

no cheers, niiteshift

Nite, are you gonna stand there and go against what Japov thinks?'

Its pretty clear that the vaccine does not work, cause all 83 cases were vaccinated people, and if we needed a vaccine wouldnt tucker carlson tell us that?

Huh? Walk around and visit the old age homes too.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO .

Hey Fd, no that's not correct. The 83 cases were simply contacts of other infected people already in lockdown.. That is a part of unqualified information which is circulating on social media. As far as I know, they were not vaccinated. Also, 11 people with no traceable contact is of great concern.

We're now up to 240k vaccinated out of a population of 900k.

Although it hurts me both socially and financially, as a medic myself, the CMO is doing the best job he can, and I hope he keeps analyzing the data, as he does on a daily basis to get us through this mess.

Vaccination and social isolation greatly reduces it's spread. Simple scientific fact.

Stay safe.

cheers, nishift

Hey Fd, although I appreciate the humor, I'm just a too little involved in the reality side of things.

Yes, ,there are some great jokes such as the run on toilet paper in Oz which made us all look like damn morons.

I love a joke, but it needs to be pertinent and provide comic relief to a very serious situation.

All jokes accepted as long as they don't stir the pot. smile

Well, it just got a heck of a lot worse here. 59 days in lockdown so far.

We are averaging over 100 cases a day, and although most have been tracked, there are many with no contact source.

Worst thing is that it has infected the medical response teams and even the Navy and police and hospitals.

Johns Hopkins data suggests an exponential rise, and of course, it has wrecked the economy.

Oz medical response teams are on standby to assist if necessary.

The good news is that 42% of the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, and people are sharing food and resources as best as possible. At least we can all live on fresh fish, fruit and vegetables which grow wild.

At the moment I am still building our restaurant and bar, so am kept busy on that. It is expected that this wave will continue for another 3-4 months, so let's look forward to the days of some sort of normality again.

Stay safe folks ! And we welcome everyone back to Fiji when the nightmare is over. smile

Man Geoff I do hope things get better soon for you and Fiji

Luckily you are starting to vaccinate and hopefully things will turn in a week or two three

In the meantime, stay safe and work on that bar

You should actually do a documentary on your bar reno and sell it to HGTV. My wife is carzy about these reno shows...it subsidizes the cost nicely...

NIte for most of The U.S. it's redundant, for yourself and people in Fiji, its brand new. Im in NJ bordering New York, nobody had it worse than us, and no vaccines, treatments, were available, they were ordering ventilators like they were toilet paper.

You are very lucky to have a vaccine at same time it got started there, and we do hope Fiji bounces back. I understand Indonesia is getting hammered with the delta variant, as long as people deny the vaccine, variants are going to pop up, probably getting more virulent cause theyll have less people to infect.

Hey John and Fd,

Yes, we are quite fortunate in that Fiji, before the pandemic, was 369 days without one case, so we have a year's data on how other countries have dealt with it. Also plenty of vaccine.

Oz is deploring AUSMAT ( Oz medical assistance teams ) which is also a huge bonus, as it has infected the hospitals, front line staff, police and military personel.

Oz was very prepared and as it happened, has had very few cases, so have excess capacity to send us. Bring in those Hercules boys !

John, yes, good idea about the doco. We have taken plenty of photos and video, so have plenty to work with. We know the folks at Fiji TV and my daughter is a Sydney based actor, so we have the skills and resources to do it. Just got to find the right angle to make it interesting huh ?

Ok, must fly now and go and build a bar and eat pizza. grin

Thanks for your interest and comments and stay safe.

cheers, niteshift

Thanks for the kind wishes John,

The situation here has got a lot worse. We missed the first wave by shutting down the borders. This one was imported by returning citizens, and spread to the staff, and then the community.

We simply don't have the hospital capacity like in the US.

There is a lot of aid being sent from Oz, NZ and China, and the vaccination rate has passed 46%, so we might be able to get it under control.

So yes, all things will pass. It just better pass before we run out of pizza and beer. grin

If people will continue getting the vaccines, you should be okay in about 4 to 6 weeks.
It turned from bad to good very quickly in Houston once the vaccines got distributed.
