Other than the Cold War there was greater sense of calm. And then my generation (boomers) went to work on destroying that beginning in the 60s. And then the same people who denounced their parents as "capitalist pigs" became even greedier than their parents in the 80s.

And now Western Society has returned to a more typical version of itself. The rot has returned much fuller.

In every era, you Revelations enthusiasts announce that all of the signs are in place and the end times are nigh. Don't get your hopes up to high Tony. wink

Yes, and any man not seeking God's will must only be serving his own...

But...

We are that generation that witnessed the rebirth of Israel and the desert blooms again...

In the old testament Israel is always referred to as a fig tree... Hosea 9:10, Jeremiah 8:13, Jeremiah 24:, Micah4:4

Matthew 24:
32“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Lol... Define fate. I'm just a messenger and a repentant witness, not a fortune teller... and no, God is not a time traveler lol. Linear time is our limitation, not His. He is the Alpha AND Omega. He knows our past, present, and future because this linear, physical existence that we enjoy is his creation. Even if we could map the entirety of this seemingly infinite physical universe, we would still only come to one conclusion... We are not gods, and some things are simply not meant for us to understand.

Ok. Be all that as it may...

If you talk to someone who has any sway with those events, ask them if they can't find a workaround for the whole Armageddon thing. Sounds awful. Maybe have a beer summit instead?

Christianity= love, compassion, love those who hate you, whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers.

"There is another commandement, and its as important as "love God with all your heart" and its "love thy neighbor".

Now that's the part most Bible readers forget. They dont have to do anything, just say God is my savior, and all is well.

Religious people are often the nastiest people. Ever bump into an old lady with one of those huge church hats? Youll get an earful.

Didnt Jesus say "faith without acts is dead"? Dont be so sure you're going to Heaven. Dont make up your own rules.

Dom doesnt want this thread to keep going, he's sick of it... Love your brother as you would yourself, and stop posting this stuff.

"Whatsoever you do, to the least of my brothers, as you do unto me." that's what it's all about right there. Its not about reciting words.

I think the reality of God envelops our universe and existence if we we ascribe to God the creation of our universe, and believe God to be the sum of all existance, all the known and unknown out there for all time

Still our one shared Judeo Christian Islamic God is one way to look at ultimate reality. Our world has been gifted with a number of other important beliefs that should all be accorded respect.

I like where Dom's mind is at in this, in that the universal rule shared among religions is in fact the Golden Rule he cites

My friend and colleague Paul McKenna created the Golden Rule Poster which captures the way this rule is phrased across all beliefs...and it has circulated around the world

Everyone has the right to believe what they may and act on their beliefs to the extent they do no harm to others in the name of God. Bless Everett for his consistent belief in his version of faith. I may not be a literal believer in the Bible as he is, and I find his pronouncements irrelevent to me, but I find his dedication to what he believes to be his duty to evangelize admirable.

Picking and choosing what you like out of the Bible is also illogical
You ignore Jesus, but read Revelation, which is so far out there, nobody could understand it.

Our Earth has been destroyed at least four times, we were once ruled by dinosaurs, we have been pummeled by asteroids for thousands of years, and had hurricanes, tornados, flooding, for THOUSANDS of years. weve gone through 5 ice ages, and deep in human history we were nothing but savage hunters looking for food. No different than other animals now.

Logic goes out the window, it makes ZERO sense.

I was raised catholic and I do believe in God, but its a ever changing belief. I think there is something to Heaven being on Earth someday, because physics has shown us that we dont see our environment, we could be walking amongst spirits and ancestors all the time and not know it or see it.

Its possible there is a spiritual part of us, and I like to believe there is something. it may be inherant in all living beings. We are one with the universe. We are made with the same stuff from stars, Maybe Jesus was trying to nudge us in the right direction.

But I dont believe in a brick house in the sky.

I ignore Jesus...?

Revelation 1:
1This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon come to pass. He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John, 2who testifies to everything he saw. This is the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
3Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, because the time is near.

I highly recommend you continue reading...

Returning to the post quoted below....
It seems that Meghan and Harry have ignited a major battle in the Spotify Wars. Spotify is giving them 25 million for the exclusive right to their podcasts.
It is the same Meghan who denounced the royals as racist and privileged. Now her marital connection to them and their privilege is the sole reason that she has the privilege of scoring 25 million for a podcast.

And musicians are screaming WTF? 25 million? There is all that money available, and it is going exclusively to them?!!!!!

article
https://nypost.com/2021/04/24/prince-harry-meghan-markle-25m-spotify-deal-enrages-artists/

If songwriters are going to score wins in this war, it needs to be at this battle. The "royals" have brought it front and center to the public.

Beyond that they are infatuated with the "stars." The songwriters dont even exist in their galaxy unless they are stars singing their own songs.

The next issue is the streamers themselves and their hold on the product and delivery. Their market share makes them appear very strong.

The next issue is the division of profits. I've no idea how much is there and what the big stars get...but we know that the streamers possess whatever monies there are, so they will have to agree to a different distribution. Which means that they and the stars will have to change their take. Not likely.

Lastly, is the influence of the songwriters and their advocates. They can write articles and hold symposiums...but can they actually modify the forces in control. What leverage do they have. Witholding their work product is futile. Too many of them will break ranks or not join their ranks at all if they have something that is working.

The question...Are the songwriters howling at the moon in the hopes of changing its orbit? Or can they actually change its orbit.

We'll see.

We are past the "era of the song" and are in the "ERA OF THE CELEBRITY." That is all that motivates viewers or listeners, and all that people really care about. Music is everywhere, mostly all disposable and people no longer look at music at all as they once did. Where once music was a primary influence in our lives, top 40, then 20 radio, artists and their songs were paramount. Fewer songs were in the forefront, so the attention was focused on those and the artists.

Than came cable television, multiple channels, more radio stations, mor avenues to get music. THEN, came the Internet, and people could stream whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. They also could file share and pirate music for free. Music was moved to the background. And with the net platforms, endless streaming for next to nothing, millions and millions of choices, artists everywhere, music was the disposable, "anyone can do it" element. Music and musicians now are the equivilant of the endless people that paint, sculpt, or draw for those flea markets, craft fairs, sidewalk art shows. Everyone can do it, it's all subjective and for the most part only worth what the artist themselves can generate.

The celebrity culture permeates everything we do. Sports stars tweets can incite societal upheaval, every one weighs in on every issue. Viral presence is far more important than anything creative. Celebrities dictate every aspect. The only comforting thought is that they are as fleeting as anything. In a society with an 8-30 second attention span, today's mega stars are tomorrows answer to a trivia question. Their names pop up, and most people's response is "WHO? Oh yeah, that's like so three weeks ago."

There will be new celebrities, new mergers, new people coming up to replace what was THE RAGE a few weeks before. All disposable, all forgettable.

And that. Is where we are. Do yourselves a favor and don't be expecting "the return of music or whatever." It's not coming back.

A podcast is still content, and content people will follow if it is interesting enough...so many people are in fact interested in the story that Spotify is betting their podcats will be listened to by many

Don't see this as any different from a major star being signed to a contract to produce content for TV, radio, a live show, Netflix etc etc.

It is simply alternative spotify programming.

It is not like they walked into a recording studio with a full band and autotune to create a song written especially for them.

Agree Marc

Also appears that Meghan has made this a telling moment in the Spotify War.
Giving her 25 million versus giving an established musician or songwriter $25 has drawn a battle line, and her celebrity and that of the royals has made the Spotify War public.
Because of exactly what you said. The public is obsessed with her and the longest running masquerade party in Western Civ which is the "royals."

And because of all that we get to see (in Britain) if the musicians and songwriters have any actual ammunition to fight with.
I also instinctively agree with your last sentence that things have changed and wont unchange to any significant degree.

Music has not gone anywhere, and not going anywhere. We can use the same technology that tries to doom it, by listening to good music.

The only difference is celebrity and media dominance renders the few lucky enough to be there musicians, the kings of music. And all else is considered chit. But in a way, that has always been there. The grammy's have always celebrated the few and lucky enough to be there, and ive had conversation with people, and they believe the grammys are the best musicians. "Oh, well, if so and so was so good, why wasnt he nominated for a grammy? DUHHHHH

I dont believe songs are dead, Tayor Swift would be Taylor Chit without her songs. She not a great singer, not bad, but not great, sounds sweet and nice, like her demographic. Not a great musician, shes not even a great entertainer, compared to likes of Lady Gaga, and Beyonce who are probably way more musically and dancibly talented.

But what she did have was her songs, her songs captured the imagination of young girls, like nobody has. That's talent, and she writes a nice catchy hook.

All my favorites from yesteryear stink now cause they cant write any more. Eventually you hit a wall, everybody does. But there are indies out there who blow my mind, and make a living, they just aint gonna be walking the red carpet.

But I think theres also people who roll their eyes and celebrity today. Its like, when it first started, it was interesting, now social media is so forced, and so stupid, and so..."off the top of my head" that nobody is even ready when something interesting comes along.

Most people have to be bored with social media by now, and must also realize that nobody gives a damn what they think. Soon the younger generations will want an alternative to social media, i think weve seen it a bit with cell phones.

But, Great local indies are still doing well but lack of gigs has hurt them. Great songs? Look no further, even caught attention of the boss...lol a multi millionaire and a scrub... lol

To my view, the current issues that matter are....

Spotify's gross revenue and if it could be increased. User fees ceilings.
Spotify's net profit and if it could be distributed differently and create any true satisfaction.
Spotify's willingness to cooperate in a redistribution plan.
The desire and ability of governments to enforce a redistribution.
The legal ramifications of governments and courts getting into redistribution.
The ability of the musicians to coerce Spotify into giving them more of THEIR profits using adversarial techniques.

I dont see it happening to any significant degree.

And even I have never written a song about Bruce, I have name dropped him in songs.

But Its dangerous writing a song like this, cause you stereotype yourself.. Eric Church, great song though.

I saw Roseanne Cash in Marfa, Texas a couple of years ago. She was very good.

You could step outside the venue and throw a rock and literally hit the train track that connects NOLA with LA. So when the train came by, it added to the family nostalgia.

Really can't see the Spotify issue as a problem in this area...

Content is ALWAYS the filler between advertising and in subscription models, it drives revenue

Paying for a Windsor|Markle podcast is a Spotify business decision. It will attract an audience or it won't..If the latter, they will get cancelled...if it is a new Howard Stern Show it will last

In the end, the audience will decide.

Did they get a boost up from they celebrity status? Undoubtably to absolutely true

But there is nothing new here WRT to obsession with celebrity...the National Enquirer started in 1926.

There was a famous rivalry in the 1940s between two hollywood gossip collumnists, Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons...whose reach extended out to 75 million Americans

Nothing new there either

Some magazines are simply showcases for celebrities ...People, US, Entertainment Weekly.... and Sports Illustrated wants stories about accomplished, famous, celebrity athletes

In all cases it is about advertising and subscription revenue...which can only come if the eyeballs are drawn to content

If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

All of that might true John V, but I think that the current issue up to bat is whether or not musicians and songwriters will go to the mailbox and find a check for a couple of thousand or $25 ...for the exact same work product.

Is there any way to reverse any of it or should they just resign to it and think about something else?
People hold on to things like livelihoods. They often want final proof that they should merely give up, because time has passed them by.
Meghan and Harry may have provided the opportunity to obtain that proof.

Is it willful ignorance or effectual societal programming? I can't decide any more. Attention span v/s perpetual celebrity drama, talent v/s promotion, profitable product v/s peripheral endorsements... Can't any of you see the bigger picture? Profit driven commercial capitalism is designed and engineered to distract and convince you to choose sides and remain brand name loyal. It's every bit as political as a presidential campaign, and public address (the media) is where the rubber meets the road. It's a cult of market manipulation, and if you can't see that whoever owns the media only feeds you what they want you to consume, then your fate is sealed and you will never think for yourself again. Because money is celebrity, money is entertainment, money is notoriety, money is influence, money is power, and money is all that currently matters. It doesn't matter if you're a songwriter, seamstress, shoe maker, or chef; If you're not accepted and appropriately politically branded by the media, then you will never be seen.

Tony

Human beings have not changed much in thousands of years. The big attractions have always been gold, glamour, power and drama.
What changes are the things around human beings. That is noticeably different today, but the basic draws remain the same.

And no offense to you...but enough money beat God and Jesus in a head to head battle 2,000 years ago...and I'm afraid that it still does.

As Chris Rock once said...."A man is only as faithful as his options."

People dont realize how good of a guitar player Bruce is too. And he probably made Warren Zevons day showing up to lay down a solo for him.

Ponder this...Matthew 5:29 (pertaining to lust) "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell"

Pastor said that this passage shouldn't be taken literally. So my question... what part of the Bible should be taken litterally, and what part shouldn't - and who decides?

Whoever is preaching decides. Along with the people listening who agree.
And if people dont agree, they might break off and start their own church, in order to preach the true truth somewhere else...and purify their earthly beings.

Like Ricky Gervais said...(paraphrased)....there are 4300 religions in the world and person X thinks that they are populated by misguided fools...except for one.

It's amazing how much Religious and spiritual imagery is in Springsteens music. So much so that a minister wrote a book about it, he gives sermons referencing Bruce Springsteen songs.

Sorry to interrupt all the sidetracking and apocalypsin' go on around here, but returning briefly to the point, here is another view that offer's one individual's theory about goings on in the music delivery world. It is a personal opinion but presented reasonably and methodically.

Adam Raised A Cain

(From Darkness On The Edge Of Town - 1978)

"In the Bible Cain slew Abel and East of Eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past
Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins, you inherit the flames Adam raised a Cain"

. Living Proof

(From Lucky Town - 1992)

"In a world so hard and dirty so fouled and confused
Searching for a little bit of God's mercy
I found living proof"

. Across The Border

(From The Ghost Of Tom Joad - 1995)

"For what are we without hope in our hearts?
That someday we'll drink from God's blessed waters and eat the fruit from the vine
I know love and fortune will be mine, somewhere across the border"

5. My City Of Ruins

(From The Rising - 2002)

"Now with these hands... I pray Lord... With these hands...I pray for the strength, Lord
I pray for the faith, Lord, we pray for your love, Lord, we pray for the lost, Lord, we pray for this world, Lord...
Come on, rise up... Come on, rise up"

6. Jesus Was An Only Son

(From Devils & Dust - 2005)

"Jesus was an only son, as he walked up Calvary Hill
His mother Mary walking beside him, in the path where his blood spilled
Jesus was an only son, in the hills of Nazareth
As he lay reading the Psalms of David, at his mother's feet"

7. Rocky Ground

(From Wrecking Ball - 2012)

"Forty days and nights of rain washed this land
Jesus said the money changers, in this temple will not stand
Find your flock, get them to higher ground
The floodwater's rising, we're Canaan bound"

8. Land Of Hope And Dreams

(From Wrecking Ball - 2012)

"This train... Carries saints and sinners, This train... Carries losers and winners, This train... Carries whores and gamblers, This train... Carries lost souls, I said this train... Dreams will not be thwarted, This train... Faith will be rewarded"

9. Heaven's Wall

(From High Hopes - 2014)

"There was a woman waiting at the well, drawing water 'neath a desert sky of blue
She said he'll heal the blind, raise the dead, cure that sickness out of you"

10. This Is Your Sword

(From High Hopes - 2014)

"The times they are dark, darkness covers the earth, but this world's filled with the beauty of God's work

Hold tight to your promise, stay righteous, stay strong, for the days of miracles will come along

This is your sword, this is your shield, this is the power of love revealed"

Trust me Dom, the Bible is a whole lot more interesting, and a whole lot scarier, than any Springsteen album lol.

Let's write a real song...

The signs of the time are lost on the blind
Who have eyes but refuse to see
Those who have ears but refuse to hear
Deny the truth that was given for free

Let the blood rise to the bridles
Let them lament what they've done
Let the meek reclaim God's gift
In the name of the triumphant Son

The vain and deceitful, the greedy and evil
With crowns of gold but feet of clay
The lion of Judah, Yeshua, hallelujah
Will claim their thrones on judgment day

Let the birds feast on their flesh
Let their inequity be undone
Let the lightning strike in the east
And sound the return of the triumphant Son

We make idols out of sport stars, musicians, singer, etc., but we must be careful not to make gods out of them. Jesus is the only God that walked on this earth and only He deserves to be worshiped and praised as the Saviour of man. Only through Him and His sacrifice can our sins be forgiven, only through Him can we gain Heaven. I can admire people that have been given special talents in many aspects of life, but I'll never put them on a pedestal and worship them to the point of making them a god. They are flawed human beings like everyone else needing a Saviour to forgive their sins.

Tony and Everett...

Please explain your viewpoint to me regarding something.
There are people like me who are agnostic. Not atheist. Not antagonistic towards religion. We get why people want to find a connection to their reason for being. And dont fault them for choosing to accept Christianity as that reason. But we, personally, view the story of Christianity and Jesus with doubts.

Aside from that...I dont think that any reasonable person doubts that the quickest way to an argument is religion or politics. Even though this is a song site, that seems to be no issue. I've been on motorcycle ridership sites where conversations about either were stopped when they started.

I dont view your enthusiasm for your religion as anything bad. Been around it my whole life. But what do you feel about possibly offending or making those people uncomfortable with very different religious views or "non"-views? Does what offends them matter? If not, why not?

I know that the question is a cliche, but I dont ever have an opportunity to ask it in such a direct context.

Also...Bonus question....
You are convinced that the partitioning of Israel means that the end times are at hand. And that the prophesized one world government is arising as we speak, which will enable the anti-Christ. And then all the books and tv shows will come true. The earth will become enveloped in war, after which the victorious prince of peace will rule for a millenium.

But...what do you say to someone like me who agrees with you that some unified globalist government is something to be resisted...Yet...I am not at all certain that I want a one world government composed in your favored image?
