Got some good news this week for this song, Dave and I signed a publishing contract for a one song deal.
It's with a UK publisher.
Also Dave has a new album out on Spotify, Rising From the Dead

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13845224

Songs from the Parlour (David Lekich and John Vaughan)

(V) The wind is howling at my door
trying hard but it won't get in.
The hallway clock struck midnight
and I canít sleep at all again.

(C) Because these songs from the parlour
that keep filling up my mind,
carrying me off to the nights of summer
back to happier times.
Yes, itís songs from the parlour,
the ones sheís left behindó
Songs from the parlour,
songs for old times.

(V) This room is my refuge
from the cold and lonely nights.
If I could shake her memory
I just might get some sleep tonight.

(B) So I pour a glass of whiskey
and smoke another cigarette
I keep her picture by the fire,
but itís her voice I canít forget.

(C) But these songs from the parlour
keep filling up my mind,
carrying me off to the nights of summer
back to happier times.
Yes, itís songs from the parlour,
Sent from my Huawei phone

Songs from the Parlour (David Lekich and John Vaughan)

(V) The wind is howling at my door (When sung, a very brief 'rest' between 'wind' and 'is' could make this Line more clear.)
trying hard but it won't get in. (Lines 1 and 2, present tense, 'is'. Line 3, 'struck', past tense. 'strikes'? Happening now.)
The hallway clock struck midnight
and I canít sleep at all again. (Delete 'and'?)

(C) Because these songs from the parlour (I'd delete 'Because'. The Line will read/sing the same without it.)
that keep filling up my mind, (I'd delete 'that'. It seems to set up for something else to be said.)
carrying me off to the nights of summer
back to happier times.
Yes, itís songs from the parlour,
the ones sheís left behindó (I wonder if singing directly to 'her' would be stronger. "the ones YOU left behind".)
Songs from the parlour,
songs for old times. (Each word in this Line has to be enunciated clearly, each given its space to communicate its meaning. If slurred together they lose their effect.)

(V) This room is my refuge
from the cold and lonely nights.
If I could shake her memory ('YOUR' memory)(He doesn't enunciate the 'i' in 'If'.)
I just might get some sleep tonight.

(B) So I pour a glass of whiskey
and smoke another cigarette
I keep her picture by the fire, (YOUR picture)
but itís her voice I canít forget. (YOUR voice)

(C) But these songs from the parlour (Delete 'But'?)
keep filling up my mind, (You've deleted 'that' in this second giving of the Chorus. See the difference it makes?)
carrying me off to the nights of summer
back to happier times.
Yes, itís songs from the parlour,

Sent from my Huawei phone (I thought this was a Line in the Song, a 'Product Placement' perhaps, to clear with Huawei and possibly get paid for an endorsement.)

Congratulations! Deej has done a great job with this, both the vocals and the arrangement. The lyric ain't bad either smile I'm not surprised a UK publisher was interested. This feels like the kind of thing a British folk band might perform.

The ending sounds a bit weird, like there's a bum note.

I think "Sent from my Huawei phone" should be the title LOL

Thanks Gavin a foot in the door after a disappointing contract with a publisher a couple of years back.
Glad you liked it

Really nice song Has a great feel to it. Would love to have you throw some harmonies on the chorus. Well put together.

Nice work. I agree DJ's voice carries the song, but it is a nice melodic hook, lyrical and sonic. The voice makes it seem the song is happening, and the attention is on the vocal. Very good chorus.

If only there was a way to get the music up to snuff with the vocal. It's just below it, inmho, guitars in BIAB never get by my ear. Im hoping to have better success with different acoustic software.

DJ also appears to be a nice guy, generous with his time and willing to work with lyricists who dont have those capabilities.

Ever hear of a guy named Luke Kelly? a favorite of my dads, the voice reminds me of him.

Good luck with the publishing and the album, im mulling one myself. But i figure I need to record at least one song...

Fde, Luke Kelly? Your dad has great taste!
Sadly he's no longer around but there's plenty of his stuff on YouTube as a solo singer and with the Dubliners.
Dave has a unique voice and talent and yes it's a privilege to work with someone of his caliber who is willing to give guys like me a chance, when lyric writers are a dime a dozen.
Thanks for the listen and comnents
John

Good luck with this one John and Deej.
Here's hoping it gets somewhere.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

It is hard to get much prettier than that.
Guitar is lovely and very tonal. Vox match up real well.

DJ,
It sounds like you have tamed your inflections a little in this song. Sounds good.
They still sound expressive and exuberant, but the taming down lays into this song real well...imho.

Pretty song. Professional quality to my ear.

If you go back into the song...one suggestion is to eq the guitar and cut some low mids and try to back out that low hum. It might make the overall sound of the song a little crisper and slightly more present.

Thanks SP.
Great feedback. This take is the version the publisher got to hear. Apparently they have their own stable of performers and the song will be used as a demo for artists to hear.
Last week my contact said he was confident of a pairing- we'll see!
Thanks for your comments and suggestion.

Late to the party but on board from the beginning to the end

I caught the UK flavour too but to me it was Chris de Burgh...well technically he's Irish

And I was talking to someone the other day about setting up ending tension by going to relative minor before settling back on the root in a song ending

Great example of this in this song
