I'd like to get back to some music topics. First up, name your 3 favorite American Bands!

I will start:

1. Aerosmith
2. Eagles
3. Beach Boys

Each of these bands represented the best of their genres I think. They defined American Hard Rock, American Folk Rock and American Pop Rock.

What are your top 3?

Brian

Allman Brothers Band
Counting Crows
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band

I would have put The Band in there, but they are 4 Canadians and 1 American!

Those are not bands John.... Lol

Its funny we had this conversion a few months ago at labor day I think. Nobody could come up with any. For me, the best American bands came as a result of the British invasion . Somebody did say Credence....

Bruce and E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Ramones

So many honorable mentions, Doors, Beach Boys, The Cars, REM, Grateful Dead, Boston, Eagles, Foo Fighters, Green Day. I like alot of the garage rock revival Bands of the 90s and 2000s. Smaller impact bands like the strokes, jack white/white stripes, Never liked grunge.

But John, a band should have a guitar in it.......lol

Hey John L
I thought all those heavies, Benny, Henry and Miller, back in that era had Swing bands, and traveled all over the world?

ok. I always liked this group, Mr. Mister they did not do a ton of music but all good stuff. I liked everything they did. I heard they were session players that got together.. there are so many groups out there, I think my Favs changed with the years some too..those three I`ll always go back and give a listen.

I think they did have small narrowed group to travel and play swing, we will have to ask John...H e might have me by a few years but not many....lol

Doors/The Band/Three Dog Night--could easily say Eagles, CCR, even James Brown--he had a great band behind him. I was definitely a Beatle fan foremost when young.

Mister Mister were good....alot of those 80s bands had a few good songs but disappeared. Mister mister have been named dropped in at least two songs...one was trains hey soul sister...

Always hard to name a top three when theres hundreds. but ill stick with...
ESB best bar band in the world...hands down. Cut their teeth having to ensure bar owners sold beer. It wasn't enough to draw people, the owners had to make money. If you've ever played live you realize how hard that is to do. You gotta keep them not wanting to leave.

TP and Heartbreakers , Mike Campbell's guitar with Pettys voice and songs....fuhgettabout it.

Ramones... kings of the two minute, no frills pop song. Hard to write so Simply, and everything they did tipped a hat to the rock that came before them. So underrated.

I think Allman Brothers certainly were the best of the Southern Rock band genre. I am puzzled by the Black Crowes? I saw them as a one hit wonder type band that were highly overrated in their own time. I am curious why you'd put them above the dozens of other bands mentioned so far?

One of my buddies and long time JPF Member Bob Malone is Fogerty's keyboard player. I've gotten to hang out with Fogerty and for a guy over 70 when he's "ON" he sounds and plays like he was still at his peak in the 60s and 70s. It is a bit mind blowing. Even better was also getting to hang with a childhood idol Kenny Aronoff who is his drummer. I grew up on Mellancamp (who, as a "band" I would put up against anyone though they are backing a solo guy so not eligible) and he was his drummer during the peak years. Another Indiana guy. I think he can do more with a single tom, snare and bass drum than any other drummer incl. Ringo.

Actually in those cases I disagree FD. They were known as bands back then. Only later did we find "groups" sharing a general non headliner name for the most part. They were known as "orchestras" and "bands" and I think we often give short shrift to them because they predate Rock as we think of it in commercial terms, but their music certainly was fertile ground for what came after. If "rock" music started with Bill Haley and the Comets and the first rock song was, as many believe, Ike Turner's Rocket 88, which used the first distorted guitar because he was a top session player and had dropped his amp which caused the fuzzy distortion he played on Rocket 88. I got that story directly from Ike by the way. I had heard it for many years so I asked him to tell it to me on his 73rd birthday party (long story how I ended up there) and he confirmed it all.

They had a big card that all these people were signing, so I signed it too and wrote "thanks for inventing Rock and Roll music Ike" I have tons of photos and also a video of him playing Proud Mary live for the last time ever according to his family.

Ha! Another band I like and have brushed with, Mr Mister. Their career was too limited. Another favorite of mine was Wang Chung. I loved their soundtrack to To Live and Die in LA which really perfectly fit the early keyboard pop/rock era and the film setting.

Your last two are definitely in the Pantheon of Greats. But musically, I just never got the relevance of the Grateful Dead? They had one late hit and basically were more of a cultural movement than a musical one. Most of their shows were heavily drug addled and hard to connect with. Most just musical masturbation with an audience. Noodle here, noodle there, take another toke and noodle on.

The fun of a topic like this is simply to see what others think and like. I am not remotely suggesting my original 3 at the top are my favorites. They aren't at all. I just think they have spawned the most derivatives after they set the pace. I love tons of smaller bands more than the Eagles or Beach Boys. Even Aerosmith were way up and way down in quality over the years and their second half resurgence came mostly on Co-writes and of all things a Diane Warren ballad "I don't want to miss a thing" which for me was their all time low point though only Tyler performed on it as far as I am aware.

I love lists. I could have said Top 10, but I thought I would start off easy and add more specific stuff going forward.

Three Dog Night was a great performance band, but they only did other people's songs (at least the hits). Definitely influential style wise.

Yes, Brian is correct. They were known as Big Bands/ The Big Band Era. Also “swing bands. I grew up with the music of big bands, thanks to my dad. Many of the big bands were fronted by great singers like Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, etc.

Back when the world was young:
Buffalo Springfield. A variety of styles, unique to the time, Lyrical intrigue and engagement, guitar solos.
Jefferson Airplane. "Surrealistic Pillow", the eclectic mix of styles I became addicted to and want in an 'album'.
The Walker Brothers.
I don't know if they were American or not. I think some of them came to Three Dog Night. Maybe to Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

Definitely The Beach Boys, a whole other thing, the 'beach sound'.
Grand Funk Railroad, "We're an American Band!"
James Gang.

Eagles, fo sho. A publisher once said, "We need another band like The Eagles. They took us in a different direction too, the 'desert sound'.
Four Tops.
Temptations.
Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

The Band.
Iron Butterfly. "Lonely Boy". American?

We didn't know and probably didn't care where they came from. They all came out of our a.m. radio in an eclectic mix, training my ear to expect that kind of creativity from a band.
The British Invasion enriched it doubly.

I think Allman Brothers certainly were the best of the Southern Rock band genre. I am puzzled by the Black Crowes? I saw them as a one hit wonder type band that were highly overrated in their own time. I am curious why you'd put them above the dozens of other bands mentioned so far?

I actually wouldn't put the Allman Brothers Band in the "southern rock" category, they are a jam band with tons of musical influences. Plus when discussing the three best rock guitarists of all time, some lists (especially mine) include Duane Allman, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix -- all pioneers in their fields.

It is Counting Crows not the Black Crowes! August and Everything After is in my opinion nearly a perfect rock album. The follow up albums were great also.

Allmans were a blues band first and foremost. They definitely dove into southern rock/country/rock/even pop. I saw Gregg Allman on same bill as Stevie Ray Vaughn. Pier in NYC, he walked out if a limo, which I could see from where I was sitting. Young girl with tight skirt got out with him...lol. No wonder he was married 7 times I think?

Counting crows are good, I loved that album too. They were part of that 90s period where rock was trying to survive a!omg with grunge.

They might not be in the tops list, but they were part of that last class of surviving rock bands..... Them, wallflowers, hootie and the blowfish, you don't even see their calibre today

They had some great songs too. Just might not put them in the legendary category. Compared to today, they are Beethoven!

Actually, the Allman Brothers were the FIRST southern rock band. They build Phil Waldens Capricorn label, which WAS Southern rock. So the truth is, they were the founding southern rock band. "Jam bands" terms didn't come till later.

I thought Skynard was the face of southern rock...

Reading up it does credit all man's as being the first southern rock band. They definitely were. I just read Gregg Allman said calling it southern rock was redundant. All rock music comes from the south.

To me the link to all music is the blues.

When I think southern rock I think Lynyrd Skynyrd, outlaws, marshall tucker, molly hatchett, 38 special, charlie daniels band and the like. Although ABB is always included as the first, they really drew their influences from rock and blues. ABB really defied that easy labelling. All you have to do is listen to the first 4:30 of mountain jam and you realize that these guys did their own thing: Mountain Jam, fillmore east

Ha! That makes so much more sense! Though I still think their contribution to music is fairly lightweight compared to others mentioned by you and everyone else, they are significantly better than the Black Crows.

One headlight was nice but the Wallflowers were pretty limited beyond that. One hit wonders all the way.

I'd think if you didn't connect with a msdd audience more than once or twice in your own timeline, it is hard to consider you among the greatest ever.

Well the blues came out of a lot of Northern manufacturing Rust belt cities as an extension of spirituals. Chicago is and was integral to Blues though certainly Robert Johnson is the key southern Icon.

I seem to be the only one who put up Van Halen. In my lifetime, I remember 3 huge moments in rock music:

When...I Wanna Hold Your Hand came on the radio. (Brits)
When...Stairway came on the radio. (Brits)
When...the intro to "You Really Got Me" came on the radio. (VH)

In all cases, those songs did not have to "grow" on most people. Those songs exploded in people's ears on the first hearing.

As American bands go, I dont know how you get bigger than Van Halen.

Brian , Wall flowers were a one ALBUM wonder I think there were 4-5 hits 6th ave heartache was one.

I was just pointing to them for the time period of counting crows. I think the 90s was the end of the rock bands who wrote good songs era. 2000 U had garage rock revival which was cool for me, but as far as concept albums and songs in the mainstream, that was the end.

But counting crows would not make my list, probably not till 50 ish. But they were really good.

Marty I dont have an issue with putting Van Halen in there. Eddie alone, but Alex as a drummer, and Michael Anthony's soaring harmonies.

American band, although VH was born n Netherlands.

And guitar innovation, that's the Hendrix of the 80s, his playing confused the he'll out of me, how is he doing that, was the question.

I just always thought of vh as a get drunk and party band, they never really wrote songs that struck, but they were highly entertaining.

As with most lists, the criteria needs to be laid out, more than this is what I like.

Wouldn't the Eagles be bigger than Van Halen?
I think that VH loses points because of Hagar, (even though they sold product) as a lot of fans preferred Roth. Also, Gary Cherone...well nuff said.

I like Sammy but would agree Roth was an amazing front man.

Like I said before, if the list is just personal favorites, anything goes.

Van Halen never wrote a Hotel California, but nobody in the Eagles was VH on guitar either.

So many variables to plug in, but like most things in the end it comes down to what you like.

Eagles were in my honorable mention list

Their heyday was

You Really Got Me
Pretty Woman
Teacher
Panama
etc....

the Roth time.
My point is that the success and fame that they achieved instantly during that time period was not exceeded by any American band.
And it was because Eddie could stun you with his playing and at the same that it stunned you... you viscerally liked what your ears heard.
Not that they werent huge with Hagar, but I think their heyday was Roth. And during their heyday, I think that they were as big as any American Band has ever been.

Side note:
Most people considered the Beatles passed their prime when they executed my favorite Beatle music. By contrast to VH the Beatles greatness has been the "legs" that all of their music had.

Side Note 2:
During his time, I dont know anyone bigger than Hendrix. He created his own category.

What are the criteria for these lists? Fame? Influence? Commercial viability? It's why I don't really do a "favorite" or "The Best" lists. I like too many and dislike too many.
And it's all subjective. So I don't get into those discussions.

The thing I was mentioning on the "Allman Brothers not being a Southern Rock band", is that you have to use the designations that were placed on them by most historians and people that do the designations, mainly, the press, the labels ,the opinion makers. Allman Brothers basically were the pioneers of Southern Rock. They were deeply southern, allowed Phil Walden to found Capricorn records with defined the Southern rock boom from the 70's to the 80's and opened the door and influenced every Southern Rock band, from Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd, 38 Special, CDB, Wet Willie, Elvin Bishop, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and every other conceivable band of those days and even the jam bands of today. So they are considered the "Grandfathers and founders of the movement" And like all the really greats, it wasn't just in Southern Rock it was bringing that to the forefront in all genres of music.
And while they are the biggest influence, ALL southern rock bands were influenced by the blues, gospel, whether it was coming out of Chicago, or Memphis, Muscle Shoals, it was all an amalgamize. So while they may fall into more than one category, they are pretty much considered THE SOUTHERN ROCK BAND.
