lol. As much as im a huge fan of the boss, is there any more celebrated, studied and talked about artist out there than he is? There are hundreds of books about his life, music, his philosophies, his songwriting, there are authors and film makers who make stories and movies out of his songs. There was a cold case episode where they used all springsteen tunes during the show. There are preachers and ministers who reference him. this guy wrote a book https://www.amazon.com/Gospel-according-Bruce-Springsteen-Redemption/dp/0664231691.The tennis player del potro said meeting springsteen was like winning the us open... https://www.sport24.co.za/Tennis/USOpen/del-potro-meeting-the-boss-like-winning-us-open-20180901There was a movie Springsteen and I based on fan experiences at concerts and in their lives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVQUeCi9V0sNow there is a movie about a Pakistani author who gets inspired by Springsteens music... https://www.thewrap.com/bruce-sprin...d-by-the-light-release-date-warner-bros/Even me somebody who has seen him over 30 times, is a bit exhausted by all the fanfare. His music means a lot to a lot of people, but there is also big money in anything Springsteen!

The only reason "Del Potro" said it was like winning the US Open is because he won the US Open once and realized it didn't change his life like he thought it might have.
I am not sure why but Bruce never caught my interest for some reason. Sure, I enjoyed some of his music as I was a kid when he was his peak charting self, but I also recall when I was in College and he was playing his huge Born In The USA tour I had a chance to go back stage, meet him etc. because he was playing at the facility where I was interning, plus free tickets to the show and I passed on it. And I don't regret it. Not because he's not good or anything silly, he really just didn't seem iconic and special to me in any way. I recall when I was even younger when Peter Frampton was the biggest rock star that I would have killed to get the same offer. Back then I couldn't even buy tickets to his sold out tour when it came to my town. We listened to the live simulcast on the radio that night. So I wasn't against being an uber fan, I just preferred Aerosmith and Heart instead. And now, decades later, and with all that I have learned about the business and all the stars I have met (including getting to hang out all day with Peter Frampton who sadly just announced he was retiring) I still don't get the fanfare over Springsteen. I don't see his catalog any more superior to others in the same eras, it is certainly impressive, but so are those others.
A classic case of different strokes. Usually people become obsessive fans when they are young and get over it when they have families and other things to obsess over. So for him to still have such a following when I ask my nephews if they like him (which I did) and they haven't the slightest idea who he is (3 different sets of nephews/cousins of varying ages). Maybe it is just nostalgia.

Brian Well it's in part because of the geography. Imagine anybody from Liverpool not liking The Beatles, Or Shepards Bush not liking The Who, or California not liking the Beach Boys, He is the most famous artist to ever come out of NJ. Sure, lots of people dont like him, but his enormous fame came from NJ. Artists from Ireland and England said they had never been to NJ but understoof what he was talking about. The jersey sound is legendary and he created it. Rock n roll with sax and organ, the sax had long been since gone. He brought it back. He has global fans now. Hes not the greatest musical talent, not the greatest singer. But hes one of the top 10 songwriters of the past 50 years, one of, if not the best live performers. One of the hardest workers, he worked to get the ability he has, it didn't come easy as it did for some of the other artists out there. Being born with minimal means and minimal talent, as i and most people I know were, it's inspiring. Work twice as hard as the next guy.... For me I wasnt that into until BITUSA came out, i liked some of his work, but that's what had me going backwards, his early albums were great. He writes about important things. Thats what makes him different than other pop star. He writes about things only country artists used to write about like middle classness, dignity, family, faith, purpose, that's not something that typically gets covered in a 3 minute pop song. Thats the connection..... the politics i could do without. I love Aerosmith and Heart, Steven Tyler is a great front man

The more I hear about Springsteen the more I feel I "should" be a fan lol.... Has anyone seen this yet? I havent yet, i actually even havent seen Yesterday yet, im trying to get my niece and nephew to go with me so i can inspire them, so far it hasnt happened.... Well, ive seen Springsteen 30+ times, I know people who have seen him all over the us hundreds of times. Thats Grateful Dead territory! Start with the first 3 albums, That's a starters point. They didnt sell as well, but the songs were so beyond his years and creative, songs like For You, Blinded by The Light, Sandy, Incident on 57th Street, of Course Born To Run, which I thought was his own Like a Rolling Stone. Darkness on the Eedge of Town blew my mind, The Promised Land, BadLands, Candys room, the guitars were blaring on that album as well as The RIver. Best SONGWRITING album for sure was Nebraska. But in reality, unless youve seen the man in concert, you cant appreciate his music. Heres just another day at the office, mindblowing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QWhPWBJPikPolitics....well, at one time he never said a word, then he started speaking on politics, i preferred it better when he stayed away from politics, i didnt understand when he sang "Fortunate Son" at a concert to entertain the troops., didnt make sense to me. I dont disagree on everything or agree on everything, and I dont deny his right to say what he thinks.... it's just.... That said, he has inspired me probably more than any other artist...I am from Jersey....

I saw the movie...very good, social comment that applies today. See now you inspired me to go see it Neil, I cant have people seeing it before me, what will i tell the children? Never thought somebody from your background would like the boss, but he is a bit universal, hey this movie is about a Pakistani who gets inspired.

His albums these days only have a few good songs each. But he still performs live better than most artists in their 20's

Eh, well, I took some time to look in the Music Catalogs to see if they had any Springsteen. Well sure enough one Catalog has a CD of Bruce Springsteen's Greatest Hits. 18 Songs. Careful there FD, it's on CD, something you think is on it's way out. Geronimo!

He was never a greatest hits kind of artist, most hits he wrote he gave away to other artists. I would have had a bunch of other greatest hits on that cd. But hes proven he can do country too. His duet with Rosanne Cash was gorgeous. Sea of Heartbreak.... She said she was blown away by his country music knowledge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv9lAQExP-kOr the man in black himself covering Bruce songs. Most of the real country artists from yesteryear appreciate Springsteen. U might like these...I swear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRSvNbMwQtQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHLQPgrSfWYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F04YAnxuU2g/

Well, I have heard that Rock musicians like Classic Country. But, I digress, what do I know. I dont consider todays stuff country anyway. My dad used to put on Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, WIllie Nelson, When I was a kid i thought that was the weirdest sounding music and stupid. Now I wish that stuff was still around

I haven't seen Springsteen play as often as Fdemetrio. Maybe 4 or 5 times. The first time was in Scotland in a relatively small venue, an old movie theater that held 3000 people. I waited in line all night for tickets and didn't get any. He got ill and had to cancel and, to make up for it, came back at the end of the tour and played two nights. I was able to get tickets for the second night. Since then I've seen him play much bigger venues, but nothing beat that first one. Actually, no concert I've ever been to could compare. It was shortly after the release of "The River." This would have to be my favorite track on that album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8qpTL1wxGQ

It's not just country he can dabble in. When I saw him play in Charlotte, the last half an hour or so was Irish traditional music! It was a complete surprise, although when you think about his music, it kind of makes sense that he would have an appreciation of that stuff too.

There'a a big wide hole where no one is touring... in the 35-55 range.. that's because those artists came of age post internet/email/mo3s and music has been decalued since then. So without young kids who grow up with their fanbases, there's not much going on. Once Heart, Aerosmith, Fogerty, Journey, Springsteen etc. age out of touring, it'a going to be a pretty weak field especially in Rock.

Thats an asute observation. I took my nephew with me a few summers ago. It happened to be a night where Bruce broke the all time record for longest concert..(his own record) 4 hours+ (the next night he went to Philly and broke THAT record) My nephew kept wanting to sit down, and I said you dont sit at a Springsteen concert! He liked it but thought it was too long. I noticed alot of young kids with the parents and he usually invites a young kid on stage to sing a song, and they usually know the words too which is strange. yeah music is in a bad place right now. Have to enjoy whats still around!

Amazingly, I just saw this for the first time tonght, while self isolating. Apparently HBO is running it now. It was out of the theaters too fast to plan seeing it.
Review? Corny-? Yep, Paki kid gets into Springsteen, starts reciting his lyrics during a thunder storm, while being bullied by some Nazis, while trying to get the girl.
Socially relavent? Yep.
It's part musical part movie.
The one thing it does is show the power of Bruce's earlier stuff. Touched on btr, the river and darkness. It had the same affect on me, inspired the hell out of me, and it felt like he was speaking to me....even though the movie was on the cheesey side!
The last half hour was really good.

Blinded By The Lights by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The most original sounding cover ever created.
His early stuff and up to Nebraska seems the most straight forward. I never got into his performance or politicizing, but he has done important music.

I was a big fan of the Jersey Devil with the original E street band, used to deal in bootleg albums and cassettes of him, but after his broken love album Tunnel of Love, he kinda went from albums of great songs to one or two great songs an album for me, all the best, john ps I saw the movie and I liked it, had some touching scenes, and most of the songs used came from his early stuff

Although some of Bruce's tunes were fun; I could never get into him - I guess all the macho stuff didn't appeal to me. I always went with the underdog and of course since I am a woman l listened to lot's of female singers and bands.
Never even owned one of his recordings.

Jane, Bruce's entire catalog is ABOUT the underdog. Nobody's music is more ABOUT the underdog! He himself was an underdog, came from nothing.
I viewed his stuff as like Rocky balboa against Appollo Creed.
This movie was ABOUT an underdog, who finds success in the end.
I see what you mean but his music is actually very sensitive, he is a ham on stage for sure ,but that's what gives him his audience.
Maybe you don't like power anthems, , but he has plenty of sensitive and under stated songs too.

Yeh, I like power anthems. But, too late to get into him now - he is a very, very rich man I am sure;
Give me a poor man/woman with a guitar singing the blues and I will sing along with him anyday!

Rich men with guitars started out as poor men playing guitars LOL. I don't think Bruce has lost sight of this. That's why he has such a unique connection with a live audience. A Springsteen concert is an experience like no other.

in his autobiograohy, He told the story of how took the bus to audition for John hammond, the same guy who discovered Bob Dylan. He didn't even own an acoustic guitar, he borrowed it from a friend, driving on a bus with no guitar case for the guitar. Now he could buy the guitar company, and the bus company.
Ironically born in the USA was the a!bum that I really became aware of him, I liked it but didn't flip over it. Then I started going backwards and became a diehard.
Jane, your idea is that all musicians should never find success? We're all trying for that, almost all of us never will.
Hey I have some indie artists I think belong right at the top and would gladly go if they had the shot.
I agree that the most honest, hungrier music comes from artists early and before money and business takes over, but we're not all supposed to fail, the actual idea is to find success of at least fine happiness with our music.
I agree Gavin, and Jane, your logic is flawed, can you still listen to The Beatles, even if Paul is knighted, has more money than some countries, and doesn't write better songs than me right now?
Songs are frozen in time, the times and the people change, but those songs stay there, on tape or cd, nobody can take away your music.
A great song or album is like a dog, loyal till the end.
Never too late, most of the music I like is the first album or two of most artists.

Loved the movie "Blinded By The Light". Vic Arnold opened my eyes to his lyrics and after watching this movie, I realized his skill as a lyric writer and it is nice to see someone show that lyrics really do matter.

Well he comes from a long line of writers influenced by Dylan.
I never got Dylan as a writer. It may be because I was yet around when was writing civil rights songs.
I think lyrics matter for many reasons, the way they sound, for telling a story, to help them stand out from other songs.
I dont think it's about writing just cause you want to write a song, but writing because you really have something to say. and maybe, when you do have something to say others might get it.
When I heard bruce, I heard a guy who wanted to tell me something. Not a guy who wanted to be a writer. I think that's a big difference.
Not so much any more, he still has some good songs but his desperation, and intensity ain't there any more. No artist stays great for 40 years.
But guys like Bruce, Pete Townshend, Tom Petty, had a bit more to say than the typical songwriter. But I dig The Ramones, and many of pops one hit wonder songs too, those are more about enterainment
The music always matters most, but when you have something to say it's a nice one- two punch.
I enjoyed the movie, some of the hokiness and cheesiness was hard to swallow, kind of a breakfast club 80s movie vibe. it was based on a true story.
