Received an update yesterday from ASCAP. I was wondering how this will affect royalty payments. Here's a paragraph from the email: "During this crisis, as we see more and more of our licensees who pay us start to feel the impact of the economic downturn, this translates into less revenue for ASCAP and less money available for distributions for our members. We have already been contacted by numerous licensees who are attempting to pay less, pay late or not pay at all." I was thinking the opposite... I would think in these times, that TV (Netflix, HBO, etc.) would experience a boom. Times like these, people need the Entertainment Business more than ever. Only time will tell. ASCAP is existing in employees’ homes only at present. I wonder how BMI and SESAC are being affected? My son's favorite line - "It is what it is"... Best, John

I tend to read too much into the statements they release. One signed by Paul and the other by the Lady CEO. My level of trust is at an all-time low due to the fake political vendetta we endured (now threatening to re-start). In one ASCAP notification, we were cautioned that some of the streaming services were pleading for lower rates or delayed payments. I would have thought all this shelter-in-place activity would create a demand out of sheer boredom? (Thus more streaming and/or downloads and resulting revenue!)
Like you, John... I wonder if BMI or SESAC are getting the same story line from streaming entities. I've been polishing "T%#@s" to help me do something to pass the time. Social distancing is not designed for humans... but I'll do my best to endure it. A few of my re-recordings have been pleasant surprises.
I am grateful to VP Pence's "healthcare team" for the tireless job they are doing. I wish the President would excuse himself from the press interview/inquisition part of each reporting session. That would probably cut the interview time in half and reduce the number of snarky questions from smart-ass media people. He really does have better things to do but tends to be a lightning rod at these sessions. Have you noticed how tired all these folks on-stage seem to appear?
Sorry for "droning-on"... but blame it on boredom!
Regards, ----Dave

Well Dave, if there is a shortage in funds, I hope they distribute it fairly and not show favoritism. Yeah, I know, I'm so naive. Best, John

A lot might depend on the mix of revenue sources that ASCAP has.
I imagine revenue from jukeboxes and live performances in any venue has dried up to near nothing. Movie theatres are closed, but HBO, Netflicks, etc. should have more business than ever. Spotify and other streaming services ought to have more plays. Also if the payments are for a pre-virus quarter, the number of plays might be normal but the band/performer may not be unable to make the payment due to lack of work now.
But there may be other factors involved. if a person is home because they were laid off, they not only won't be signing up for more online services, they might cancel the ones they had (and miss them a lot).. Even if a person is not laid off, they may be worried about future layoffs and may be cutting back spending including online services and steaming.
I myself am watching twice as much on HBO and Netflix, but I was subscribed to both of those already.
I would recomend examing your next statement and compare it to a statement in a pre-virus time period. If you're allowed to share info from it, I would be curious how it all breaks down.

My theory as well David. I would think TV cable, Netflix, HBO, etc... would be doing a good business now. ASCAP did say the April 26 domestic royalties won't be affected. It's the ones following that. John

I received the same email. I thought of venues that pay the license fee in order to use music in their operations that were shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions. I would think that from where your royalties come, you may not be affected the same as one who performs in such venues.

Summeoyo Possibly Summeoyo. From what I read, it sounded like an across-the-board reduction in royalty payments. Maybe a 10% reduction for all ASCAP members. Don't know... Best, John

Interesting, John:
I have not received my daily e-letter from Dean Kay... but sounds like good old "cash basis ASCAP" will be putting our checks in the mail. (Mind you, I won't be holding my breath... but maybe Santa Claus does actually exist somewhere between Nashville and NYC!)
Applying for a grant seems a bit "commradish" to me... but time will tell?
Thanks, ----Dave
