What is one of your favorite memories of JPF. Was it a song, something someone posted or a kindness that you couldn't imagine or just a hilarious moment or post? Is it just the memory of someone who used to visit here that makes you feel good to recall? REMIND us of the good things that JPF has given you as a member.
HERE'S AN EXAMPLE....does anyone remember when Ben Willis pawned his Martin guitar and the JPF community came together and helped him get it back?
What is one of your memories?

What a great topic Tammy.
I have many many memories of kind actions from other members.
2 that spring to mind are.
I don't remember names, perhaps someone will remember, but a member went out of his way to deliver a gift of one of his guitars to another member who wanted to learn how to play the guitar.
Also when my Helen passed away and I wanted to have a special song for her funeral, 2 members offered to do it for me. I had the lyrics and tune and only 5 days to get it done.
I did select the recording that Chris of 'Songcat' (who is a member of JPF) which is now 'Tunedly' did. The amazing thing for me was that all of the musicians and the vocalist in his studio, refused to take any payment from me, and they where all working session players and vocalist. Ok, they aren't members, but it was Chris who came through for me, when I was at a very sad place.
I am sure I could think of other kindnesses afforded to me, so sorry if I missed anyone.
God Bless to all Roy and Helen

Well, so many have given so much to me here, like all the great reviews and suggestions I've cataloged over the years.
Brian picking me up when I was down, private messages in agreement, you (tammy) skyrocketing from zero to 100 in mere months, hearing kaufman's works and being counseled at a low point by him, schick and his professionalism, mackie constantly moving forward, fdem and honesty, glynda trying new avenues, roy being stalwart.....mfb, sub, zaneski, whitesides, barnette, barry, calvin....I mean......jesus....the amount of things I've experienced by being here amongst you all.
It cannot be spoken, just cannot.
I will remain a lifer here, but things ebb and flow......I cannot be here all the time.
I just say thank you to all of you.

I had a feeling something was askew.

JPF was my lifeline for a few years while I took care of my mother. She was bedridden and had dementia, and I was getting more and more isolated as the work became more involved.
I would come here and be free for an hour or two, while mom slept and I had a little energy. Listen to Louis Twinn and wonder how it was that he just had to start singing and I would get immediately choked up and oft times cry. I remember Ricki and Scott would get similarly affected as well. Something so honest in his voice that always killed me and still does to this day.
I remember the day Beth first said "musicate" and "musication" and it stuck..
I remember once I participated in a bunch of us musicators making demos for "lyrics only folks" who would each post a lyric in a special thread, then Mark, Geoff aka Niteshift, Mike Caro, Scott, myself and other musicators would each choose a lyric and then produce that lyric for that lucky JPF member. I remember how happy we made a lot of "lyrics only" folks feel when we did that. And when we critiqued each others work it was all respectful. That was probably thee most happy and fulfilling group experience for me, here.
A bird in a Kristi McKeever lyric was nixed by another collab partner's rewrite the day before the Kentucky Derby, and in the middle of Kristi and I working on songs together. I noted that in that 2009 Kentucky Derby there was a horse called "Mine That Bird" that had absolutely no chance of winning cuz it was 50 to 1..but I couldn't get over the feeling that the cosmos was trying to tell us something. So I bet it and it won triple figures, and that financed the next few demos of ours which included work by Halie Loren.
I have several friendships that started here and moved beyond..but JPF was ground zero..

I remember when I joined about 2006. The site was loaded with talent. From Al David who played guitar for the Earnest Tubb band to Mike Caro (Sub) who played bass on a Madonna cut and a Michael Jackson cut to Mike Dunbar from Nashville who played for Willie Nelson and so many others. I know Mike is still playing in Nashville.
I know Sub is still playing at clubs in Staten Island and Mike is still at it in Nashville. So many others who used pseudonyms that we'll never know. I asked Mike why he left. He said because of the negativity. Some challenged his knowledge of the music business and he didn't really need the aggravation. Those guys were gems.

Get well Brian, we need you here. The power of prayer availed much, it only takes the Saviour's touch, to raise you from a hospital bed, even to raise the sleeping dead.

There are certain moments at JPF that really shine for me.
In the early days (for me, anyway...sometime around 2006 I think?) it was great to stumble upon a place full of songwriters, old and young, many of whom never even played in a band, which I found fascinating. Learning how a lyricist for a country song approached things really opened my mind to writing differently than I had for the prior thirty years. I found myself trying to write from several different start-points—the lyric (I RARELY did that before), the bass line, the title. I started collaborating with people, and that makes you learn exponentially...weird sparks fly and stranger things happen.
My favorite memories stem from when I began trying to give back in different ways than just critiques, with which I have a love-hate relationship—sometimes they're essential, sometimes they're Kryptonite. When Mike Caro was struggling, I was able to send him a really nice microphone, something he never expected and really needed. One of these days I'm going to call in my marker and get him to mix a track for me. But it made me feel good, and the memory shines.
I got a huge kick out of "donating" a few songs for various challenges. One of them was to give an opportunity for other members to "topline" a rock song—take a finished instrumental track, and create the melody and lyrics. A lot of people really enjoyed doing that, and that made me feel good about all of my aimless, nonstop musicmaking. It let my music touch other people in a different but meaningful way. It was very rewarding.
And I have been gifted with a lot of bellylaughs. Collaborating with Calvin is a good way to get those...his perfectly demented lyrics never fail to crack me up, and laughing is gravely important to me. One of the funniest nights of my life was recording my version of his song Catwalk Candy (and how cool is he to allow me to basically ignore his finished song and just up and write new music entirely? It seems rude, but it was all just a lot of fun)...my wife and two daughters took turns walking up to a mic and saying hilarious things, like improv comedians, saying stuff you might hear in a Zoolander movie. "Hairspray!" "I'm sooo hot." "Vee haf sooo much Cahndy". I went to bed that night exhausted from laughing so hard.
I've seen great souls come and go, came in just after Dawg's time, and I sure miss the thoughts of Stan, of Graham, all the sound advice from two Mikes. I've seen great talents allow themselves to emerge from this terrifying cauldron of onlookers, going from insecure fledgling fool-arounders to much more confident, high-quality songwriters. I've seen people learn and learn and learn...and I've seen people absolutely, utterly reject learning a single damned thing, as they gripe about what they won't understand.
That's what makes me return. There are times when I think it's all just a bunch of bored, dissatisfied people sitting at computers annoying each other. But I know it has always been more than that. It is where we go to find kindred souls who create. Creating is a lonely pursuit, usually. Expressing yourself is as lonely as it gets. It's good to have a place where others feel the same, and share the work.

Some of my favorite memories here thus far are my conversations via messaging with "Tampa Stan". I never met him. Never spoke personally to him but man could he make me laugh and smile and feel good about life. I miss him and think about him frequently. Big Guy Hugs, Stan.
I still owe a debt of gratitude to John Kloberdanz (sp?). Without him I would have missed my chance to put myself out there and perform. I am forever grateful for your support and guidance.
When Glynda Duncan received my suggestion for "Bag of Tears" , I'm pretty sure we both wept over that whole endeavor. One of the proudest moments in my life. Thank you, Glynda.
Back in 2011, Jen Warner reached out to me out of the blue and to my surprise had asked if I would let her sing duet for "Where We've Been". It was my first ever attempt at something like that and I am so grateful for her contribution. That song remains one of my all-time favorites.
What can I say about Michael Zaneski that hasn't already been written, said or indelibly etched into the very fabric of the music world at large? Your production of two of my songs ("Wanna Stay In Love" and "Where We've Been") remains the pinnacle of my musical journey. Thank you again for that, sir!
Roy Cooper. Forever unwavering. God bless you and Helen.
I've had so many interactions with the lot of you here. Some good. Some thought-provoking and most of them stuck in my head. Thank you to each and every one of you for giving me a voice, showing me the ropes, kicking me in the butt and being kind enough to allow me to be me in spite of myself.
I wish Brian a speedy recovery. He is, after all, how we are all here still today. Get well soon, Brian!!
Peace,
Dave Gill

It's always amazed me how small, seemingly inconsequential actions, can change the course of a life entirely Back in the early 2000's, I would write songs and play them for my wife and a few friends. Then forget them. One day, I wrote a song with a title that I was sure someone must have used already. I decided to do a search to see if there were any other songs with the same title. I don't know why - it's not like I was going to do anything with mine. Anyway, I got a hit to this place called JPF where someone had, indeed, posted a song with the same title. But I started reading and lurking - and then joined. And, after a few months, it was with much trepidation that I posted my first mp3. Folks were very supportive - in fact I was amazed that such gifted songwriters and musicians would let me hang out with them. Over the years, I've had people here record my songs. I've created melodies and rough productions for lyrics-only folks. I've had people agree to play instruments or sing on my tracks and I've added harmonies and harmonica to those of others. And I've collaborated on the writing of many songs. And I still feel as I've gotten much more than I've given. My musical accomplishments are minimal - but that never seemed to be the point. The joy of belonging to JPF came from interacting with the friends I've made here and the hours that I've spent in a JPF-inspired musical zone. Basically, I've led a musical life instead of having a life where I'd strum the guitar every few months. All because of a totally unnecessary google search. Too many great memories to list here though I'll relate one. One spring, several of us at JPF decided to get together for a weekend jam session. Busy as people are, they had to cancel. Except for Clint Anglin. Clint and I knew each other through JPF but had never met in person. So he books a plane ticket and flies to Florida to spend the weekend with a person he'd never met. Who does that? We had a great time - arranging songs and then recording them. And taking some time off to do some nature photography. That was a risky thing for him to do - but it worked out so well. And it made me a little more willing to take some risks. There was a time when I commented on virtually every song that came up on the mp3 forum. Times change though - responsibilities appear and disposable time shrinks. I'm not here as often because I'm writing far fewer songs. But I'll never forget the impact that JPF has had on me and I'm enriched by the many friends that I've met here and continue to interact with. A mere "thank-you" seems inadequate. Best wishes and good luck on your surgeries, Brian. Multiply the impact you've had on me by thousands and you get some idea of how much you've made the world a more musical, and therefore better, place. And how you'll continue to do so. Scott

Wow that's incredibly uncanny. I had a buddy wo lasts years derby, the most astonishing part was the big favorite Maximum Security, actually won with no effort at all, but was disqualified for jumping the lane. I happened to be at the Meadowlands watching the simulcast with him. It was a 20 minute delay for the judges to decide who the winner was, which has never happened in the history of it, and by default the big underdog" won. Needless to say he bought dinner..... and he did it just for the hell of it. His eyes bulged when I told him what it might pay. Needless to say he bought dinner! and alot of hugs and jumping up and down. it doesnt pay to bet big favorites they dont pay and the risk is too great. Then there was the story of Smarty Jones, against the field......... Another time

There's a definite pattern to those times I have been most proud to be a member here.
Scott, Tammy, Mark and others have alluded to it..
I notice when scanning my memories, it's those times we'd all join as one to help a newbie get better at his/her craft. Of course, it always helped if the newbie was on the humble side and really wanted to learn and grow!
Tammy, Kyle (AV Week) and Deej, to name just a few, fit that profile..and all came here pretty raw, in terms of their abilities to put together a good sound recording of their music, and it was an extremely rare occasion when they would get anything here that you would NOT call nurturing.. We'd all come together to be supportive of a Tammy or a Deej, like that..We could all sense the stuff of greatness was there, and really cared and most everyone who posted in the MP3 forum would be helpful.
And this holds TRUE. today, in today's JPF as well...we all still come together for many things..
Mike

I try not to miss a day without visiting here. I've met many people here with all kinds of personalities, most good but some not so good. Just like out in the world. I've learned many different things here and I met my main demo man here, Michael, whom I appreciate very much, I've told him he was a God send when I needed him. People here don't always see eye to eye, which is to be expected with so many people that come here. I don't think anyone hates anyone here, even though at times things can get pretty heavy. I've been jumped on a few times but I expected it would happen but I don't hold any grudges against anyone. I appreciated Brian taking my side a time or two. I'm praying for his recovery for his sake and his family's sake, but also for our sake, I fear this site will disappear with out him to keep it going. I don't know how I discovered this site but I'm glad I did, I've been here nearly twenty years, wow, where does time go.

Great idea. A thread we can all agree on I too stumbled on this site. In its first iteration it was a simple posting board...but it already had its early stalwarts...Bobbie Gallup, always generous, Graham Henderson, our Aussie mate who gave out GOYMs when he liked what he read. Couch was there and in great form. Then there was Tink who wrote exquisite lyrics. And what can I say about Kaley Willow except she is one of the most beautiful people, inside and out...and blossomed under our noses. Shayne Vaughan was running "The Write Stuff" at that time and I felt quite honoured to be invited there...and found JPF friends there already. One funny story...Tink posted as Cindy Miller at TWS and I found the same lyric at JPF under Tink....and IMd her to say some schmuckky was passing of her lyric as their own... Those early days were loads of fun with spontaneous "contests" ....e.g we all tackled household appliances. Tink had posted a classic "Vacuum Casanova" about a vacuum salesman and started us all off writing appliance lyrics. There were QSO's ....quick spicy ones (term coined by Anthony Torres I believe) that usually appeared before the weekend....risque lyrics that came close to crossing lines. Before Pineyfest, (early days gatherings in Nashville) a group of us met at Brian's Detroit road show. Tink from Harlen Iowa, AmigaRia from North Carolina, Anthony Torres from Detroit...and a host of others ...that was a definite highlight, All us out of towners stayed at the same motel and had some great laughs. Then there came Pineyfest I, II and III. That started over Bobbie Gallup and Corky Bernard (AKA Greydog...one of the funniest lyricists ever) getting married and inviting us all to join them at their new digs alongside the Piney River outside Nashville. Insurance issues got in the way so we all got together at the Holiday Inn in Dickson outside Nashville. That gathered 50 or so JPF members from as far away as Australia (yeah Judy Hollier) and we had several days of music and cameraderie. I still have an art deco fan Tampa Stan gave me. He actually owned a store in Tampa where he bought, fixed, and sold antique clocks and fans. It has a place in my office Perhaps the most compelling memory is the night I got news my father had been in an accident in Florida. Waiting for a flight arrangement etc took several hours overnight, but JPF members were with me all the way as I continued posting....and throughout the following days that ended in his passing. Some sent cards and I got a book on how to deal with grief. I printed off all the things people posted and bound it...and it is with other keepsakes of my dad. All in all, I would run out of space mentioning everybody who has touched me in some way. I do know that the place has inspired me, nourished me, and provided me with lots of help over the last almost 20 years and is without a doubt responsible for where I am as an amateur singer songwriter. I can only hope I gave some back.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

JPF has meant so much to so many of us... all due to Brian's generosity. Too many names from the past to mention but that zany Aussie from somewhere southeast of Perth was so kind to so many of us with free airplay of songs deserving the ash heap. Graham, you are missed.
Bethyboo (as her friends called her) was always quick to enliven a conversation and offer encouragement. When Zaneski emerged from his cocoon... we went through a spell of musical bliss... having someone with so much talent offer us demo service for next to nothing, expense-wise. His quality is amazing.
Roy Cooper has been a friend to nearly every one of us and while dealing with what would eventually become a great personal loss to him, was still always there to help us when he could.
Then our pal, Mr. Composer, John Lawrence Schick... has provided levity and leadership by example. Most of us relish in his success and enjoy his work so much.
I could go on and on, Ben, Everett, Ray, Deej, John Vaughan, Barry Butler... and so many others. But for now, we have a problem with the knowledge Brian is enduring surgery of the type somewhere out there on the edge. Please offer your support and prayers.
All my best to all of you... and forgive me if I did not give you billboard space.

Thanks Dave, Mac, Everett, Dave Gill.. Mr. Rice, you came to know that I am/was a pretty shy dude and truth is, you helped me find my voice and trust it more. Thank you, kind sir. And truth is, I owe a debt of gratitude to so many here, both past and present. I have had few, positive "constants" in my life over the last 13 years or so, and JPF has been one of them, and one of the most positive. Thanks Brian for creating and providing this wonderful place to find one's self.. and lose one's self.. Mike

I remember when I first came aboard here, some of the kindness shown by the members here putting up with me, and the posts. But they encouraged me, helped me, with writing and advise. Calvin and some other super writers would always say a word on the posts I made.
And some of the work that to this day I still listen to..Glyn and I think Carolyn Holder wrote a song Heather Knowles sang it.."Crying Woman" I thought it was great..lyric and music. Floyd Jane "Dangerous" was my fav of his..and others. Mike Zaneski his help and friendship here. But mostly the troops here, always willing to help. It has always been a warm place for me, and that will always be my memory of JPF.. Lane

I came to JPF from a very small songwriting site. I wanted more feedback on my writing. The little fireballs by many posts on the feedback forums signaled to me that this was a hoppin’ place with lots going on....! Well, I was to find out that I was right... There was a lot of critiquing going on. There were writing challenges & special “projects” along with discussions about music & songwriting that were very spirited. And the silliness! Oh my gosh! I don’t have one memory. I have many. I had a ball seriously rewriting my lyrics & learning the craft (unwittingly, initially) by commenting on other people’s work, who bravely let their writing out of the box. And I mean RE-writing....thru sharing thoughts, discussing, revising, letting it sit & gel...ultimately trusting my instincts then setting the newly born creation “free”. lol I miss that. I didn’t think of JPF as a collaboration site but more of a critique & camaraderie site. Yet Beth, Ricki & I created a song that was a hoot to write & a true collaboration in every sense of the word. And with TampaStan & especially Mike Zaneski I dug my nails in deep to flesh out a song. Ideas flew like blowing bubbles....catch ‘em quick before they’re gone! Now that’s fun! Thank you, Brian....my participation may come & go, but JPF was and is a unique space to be in where people have shown such kindness to people they’ve never met. Seeing this thread is fun! And yeah Mike, I never laughed so hard as when that “Bird” won the prize!! Woot! Great instincts! Kristi
A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. -- Abraham Maslow, American Psychologist

It was a great memory and JPF moment when Scott Campbell created a song called "Thanks Be To You" that had background vocals from many JPF folks all mixed. We all came together in his song as a background choir in this song, a wonderful memory, I was so happy to be included in that project!

Thanks to all who contributed here. This board went online in 1998 in a much different era but the fact it is still here is remarkable. The message board has always been a community unto itself within a much bigger collective. I always enjoyed the unique peronalities here and though some crossed over into the real life crowd I could come here enjoy the world within the wider JPF. My favorite thing is all of it has been preserved into roughly 100 million pages of history. We can visit Corky Bernard like hes still with us as well as all our other friends past and present.
I know things have slowed down but we can help it survive and thrive with some kindness and support for each other.
I hope we keep doing just that!

I'm so thankful for this place. Thanks for starting this, Tammy. Yes...too many great memories to name them all. The one time that stands out the most for me was when I wanted a "We Are The World" vocal effect on one of my songs. I put the word out and 8 wonderful members stepped up and another member took the time to do the music and put it all together. If you're interested, you can listen here: https://soundcloud.com/rickib/it-will-beSoundcloud is acting up for me right now but hopefully, you'll be able to hear the results of people pulling together, not for monetary gain or recognition but just for the love of music and wanting to help a fellow traveler. Thanks, Brian, for your vision and I hope you are getting stronger everyday. Ricki

Hi Ben! Al David here. It was quite an honor to be mentioned in your post. Thank you so much for the kindness. I'm back, under the name of Two Singers. I've been absent for several years but have recently returned. Went through 8 months of chemo (5-year survivor!!!), a brutal divorce and my present wife's precarious health - almost died three times since last November. I currently live in Northern Alabama - no longer in my hometown of St. Louis. I played several gigs with Ernest Tubb as his lead guitarist but was never an official member of his band, The Texas Trubadours. But I was offered the job. Couldn't accept it because I was in the Army at the time. But, it was quite a professional feather in my cap, for sure!, Just wanted to clear the air on that! Hope you are well. Wishing you the very best ... Al

Hi All ...
I joined JPF in 2001 ... close to 20 years ago. There are numerous things i recall that are special. Here are just a few:
1. Meeting and becoming very good friends with Bobbie Gallup and her husband, Corky Bernard (his screen name was Gray Dawg)
2.. Having a Top Five lyric in a lyric writing contest in the early 2,000's (out of several hundred submitted.) My former wife and I flew from St. Louis to Santa Ana, CA to be part of the awards show. It was great!
3. getting to hear the fabulous musical creations of Mark Kaufman - what a talent!!!
4. Attending three of the Nashville seminars created and hosted by Bobbie Gallup. We met a lot of the behind-the-scenes suits that gave us a lot of good info.
5. "Meeting" good and talented folks like Ben Willis, Judy Hollier, Bill Robinson, Mike Caro, John Lawrence Shick, Dave Rice, Niteshift, John Hoffman, Bailey Bridges, Cindy Miller (Tink - one of my very best friends on here at the time), and so many others.
I could go on and on but I've prob ably already said more than enough. I can't be here as often I used to, but will be every chance I get. Wishing everyone the very best ...
Al David
