I havent seen it or know much about it other than the plot is the world has never heard a Beatles song before, and this guy makes sure they do. Wouldnt that be cool, being named writer of the whole Beatles catalogue? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/26/movies/yesterday-review.htmlYesterday: It has the most intriguing premise of any film to hit theaters so far this year: After a struggling British musician (Himesh Patel) suffers a bike accident, he wakes up to find the world has no collective memory of The Beatles, thus allowing him to pass all their hit songs off as his own and quickly ascent to international superstardom. As for how it all works, all you need is Love Actually scribe Richard Curtis and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle coming together and it all but guarantees a feel-good jukebox musical that finds a most inspired way to celebrate the most beloved rock band of all time: by pretending they no longer exist. Given Curtis's involvement, it shouldn't be surprising, but beyond its high concept scenario the film also leans just as heavily into its "Will They or Won't They?" romantic subplot. In other words, it's a perfect date movie for Beatles lovers.

I saw it Friday. VERY GOOD MOVIE. A fun thing that it does is find that there are things that would not have been without the Beatles. Things in the culture, other bands. There is a point he mentions a song by the band OASIS, and goes to find out they didn't exist either. The inference is that without the Beatles, Oasis and many other bands would have never existed either. Is a very cool premise.
They never go into what happened. There was a world wide black out for 12 seconds. In that time, the main character is hit by a bus. He wakes up in the hospital, his manager (girlfriend) by his side. He had broken his guitar in his fall so she gives him a new one. When he starts playing YESTERDAY she and his friends are floored, wondering when he wrote that. You see, before his accident, he was a struggling songwriter who was actually very mediocre. He tells them and everyone that The Beatles did those songs. But they have never heard of the Beatles, Paul, George, John and Ringo. He looks them up on the Net and there is no mention no matter how he searches.
It takes him a while to decide to pass the songs off as his, and a pretty funny aspect is him trying to remember the lyrics on all those songs. I thought "I'd never remember those things either." Shows you how above everything else those guys were. And there is another funny song with his producer/publisher/new manager from LA when he plays one of his own other songs against the songs of the Beatles. She says "I hate it but don't care enough to listen a second time to find out why I hate it." That is a pretty funny and true part and shows you again, how far above everyone else the Beatles actually were.
I will admit the ending is a bit anti climatic and somewhat predictable for a love story movie, guy gets the girl and all. But most of it is just a really cool ride. And hearing those songs and watching people react who had never heard them before is well worth the price of admission. And interestingly enough one of the underlying things of the music is introducing generations who never heard that music to the music. In the world of "Life imitates art" the reality is that this movie will do just that.
Very good film. Every songwriter should be required to see it. MAB

Im gonna see if I can drag my Niece and Nephew with me to see it this weekend. Figures theyd bring up Oasis, Oasis were constantly harassed by "sounding too much like the Beatles" their response was like "we never claimed NOT to be stealing from The Beatles", they admitted it and it caught on. They were one of the better Alt bands to come out in the 90's. I still enjoy their stuff. Sounds like a fun movie, must see

I've loved "parallel universe" stuff ever since 'Fringe' --and even if it turns out to be a dream (within a dream) he's having (always a possibility with this kinda premise), I'll probably still enjoy it from what I've heard and read about it. Will probably see it over the long weekend as well. Mike

I've fantasized this science fiction scenario many times, and I KNOW I'm not alone. It seems like a Promethean kinda archetypal thing: stealing fire from the underworld to share with humanity.. Mike

I've fantasized this science fiction scenario many times, and I KNOW I'm not alone. It's kind of like the ole "being stranded on a deserted Island" with the hottest woman you can think of. It'll never happen, but its fun thinking about it What artist doesnt wish they were them, or as others say "I wish I had their money"

Saw the movie. Be aware, guys, it's a romantic comedy more than anything but the softest type of sci-fi, but it was nice hearing the songs which have mostly stripped-down but faithful renditions, though a really freaked-out version of "Help!" might be my favorite in the movie, simply cuz it tries to sound like what the lyric is saying, finally.
Spoiler Alert follows, nothing major and I'm trying to avoid spoilage, but don't read it if you want to go into the movie tabula rasa:
I was disappointed with the parallel universe stuff, though they milked a few jokes out of it, but I think anyone who would discover one major difference (between the two worlds) like the lead protagonist does would investigate that, just a little! I think the script would've been tighter without even introducing that idea, which became a distraction for me, as I thought about its implications rather than paying attention to what was happening on the screen, as they quickly abandoned pursuing this major difference between the two worlds.

I saw it too. Very lightweight, totally focused on its flimsy romantic premise and the troubled emotions of a shallow dude, but a pleasant ride. I didn't really need to see this in a theater, I guess.

I havent see it, and im the one who started the thread, lol
Well i assumed with Ed Sheeran in it it would be more of a kids movie, but being it involves The Beatles, it may be a good movie for parents to see with their kids
I guess somebody got the memo that the music world could use a new Beatles. That's the message i get

That's the message i get It's worth seeing if you like Richard Curtis feelgood movies like Four Weddings and a Funeral, or Love, Actually. It's really a romantic comedy. I actually found the concept of a weird event wiping out the existence of the Beatles more believable than the love story I'm not an Ed Sheeran fan, but he provides some pretty good comic moments and I take my hat off to him for basically allowing his songs to be juxtaposed with Beatles classics. He must have known how much they would suffer in comparison.

Yeah, I have a new respect for the treacly Ed Sheeran for playing himself in such a self-deprecating way. He was like the gross but funny bad guy who gets defeated, and to allow himself to be seen that way is pretty impressive to me. He allowed his serious career, his image, his own self to be viewed as an also-ran. Hats off to Ed.

I liked the the covers of the beatle tunes, but if the shoe were on my foot, I never would have claimed, even for a short time, the songs were mine, even if the premise of the movie happened to me. The plot has some huge holes in it, but it is fun, escapist summertime entertainment. Perhaps it will bring the tunes to a few millenials, who are not that familiar with the Beatles. Pitel is a decent vocalist, and he should write some songs, if he can. He might have a career in music, methinks.

I have been looking forward to seeing the movie ever since I heard the trailer months ago. It was a good movie. Not great, but good. I liked how the actor made thee songs “his songs” without wrecking them. As a Beatle fan, it was hard for me not to shout out lyrics as the actor tried to remember. A good family movie. No cursing, no violence, just love for the Beatles.

SPOILER ALERT POST..don't read ANY of the following if you're going to see the movie...You've been warned!!
Pat, only problem with the protagonist NOT choosing to steal The Beatles catalog is that then there's no movie! I thought Curtis did a good job setting it up so we can empathize with the decisions then lead character makes..
But once they introduce "there are no cigarettes" in this world, the idea that this is actually a parallel universe fell apart for me, cuz there's no way that could be true and NOT have a world RADICALLY different from our own, since that goes back hundreds of years and would shift the population radically. How could the protagonist NOT investigate that? At least he shoulda looked up how long Bob Fosse lived and what new movies he made! Why even introduce that idea in the first place, though..
Also, Curtis/Boyle wanted us to NOT be too sure this was a parallel universe, but perhaps all a dream. There's a crucial segment where a friend keeps saying "C'MON, JACK" over and over, and I bet everyone thought, in those moments, oh! he's about to wake up!
I am happy enough with the movie either way, but would have made it just a tad differently, I think..
Mike

I kept wanting more Lyric jokes, people saying things that happen to be Beatles Lyric Lines, or 'Jack' using Lines to philosophize to friends and other characters. "Will ya still need me? Will ya still feed me? etc." I'd like to see a remake in a few years! They could flesh out the story, add more parallel universe factors, and no soundtrack with Beatles Songs could ever be a negative.
If you want to Educate the young, give them some Beatles. I recommend starting with the first and going sequentially forward, just like it happened in the reality of our time. Some of those early albums stand up to my ear today as completely satisfying product, beginning to end. By the time the eclectic "White Album" came along I was unable to criticize and accepted it as just what The Beatles were offering me at that time, on their way along their own path.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

If he didn't have musical talent, the movie would have been a flop. I really liked his rendition of beatle tunes. What's really good about the flick is that he sang him on the set, they are live recordings I'm told, no dubs.
