Someone named Lil Nas X recorded a song called "Old Town Road" that made it to #19 on Billboard's Country charts, but the chart people took it down because it wasnt country enough. Then Lil Nas remixed it with Billy Ray Cyrus and they put it back up. Do you think that it is country enough to be on country charts? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ysFgElQtjIDisclaimer: If I mispelled the name of anything...well, oh well.

There's a category called country hop, hillbilly rap. Its just fusing styles to try to make dollars from both sets of audiences. No, its not country, but....

Personally I think that "country music" is a form of folk art and folk art is organic and evolves to whatever it evolves to be.

That's what's wrong with country today, too many other genres mixed in.

This is surely an anomaly to country music but it tickles the hell out of me and I enjoy the tune, I particularly enjoy the "youtube" rapper reviews of it. Here is another if you are interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v0zZz7i_44&list=RD5v0zZz7i_44&index=1

That's what's wrong with country today, too many other genres mixed in. I think its because as each generation grows older they hear more and more stuff. And with youtube and the internet, spotify and all that it makes much more music available. Back in the day, im assuming, if you lived in Wyoming, chances are you didnt hear anything but country. Bob Dylan said he only heard local radio growing up. Now they prolly hear everything under the sun. So somebody got the idea that since everybody hears everything, let's make music that includes everything. Its happened with rock n roll so many times. First you had true rock and roll, still based on blues, but there are now hundreds of sub categories under rock. There's hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock, alternative rock, rockabilly, surf rock, arena rock, math rock, shoe gazing rock, folk rock, country rock, Glam Rock, Beat rock, hardcore rock, Heartland rock, roots rock, list goes on forever, all started by basicly one man, Chuck Berry!

If I love country and hate rap, I'm not going to love country as much with rap included in it. If I like pizza and hate olives, if they put olives on my pizza it will turn me off against pizza. Don't add water to my rum if I like it straight.

Placing it in a genre won't change it. It is what it is. John

Michael,
I understand your point. I am not sure that time will come in our lifetimes. Perhaps in 15-20 more years. Right now music is less about changing and more about production style/technology inclusion/format changes/new monetization streams etc. They have also mostly replaced the old guard, though a few older artists are still hanging on, once the current stars replace those remaining older hanger on artists then we might see a new generation refute the current for the old. It happened in Pop music where the 80's are the new 60's which dominated a long time. 80's music first was the most popular "genre" with the actual 80's songs. Now we are in the phase where current artists are mimicking 80's styles blended with Rap/Electronic movements/technology and instead of moving on to the next "old music" era, they have splintered off into mixing genres and actually creating new sounds for the first time since the 80's. The 90's-2010's were a vapid wasteland for the most part. So I doubt we'll see a lot of resurrection of that music though it is true that Justin Timberlake is now an oldies artist.
Country doesn't seem to be taking that path. It is currently just pop music with a slight twang. I'd settle for Country Rock similar to the Eagles, but even that seems out of reach. But I suspect country WILL make the turn you hope for, but it may be too late for old farts.

yeah Brian i know things have to change and some don't like it.I guess you like the music you were brought up on for the most part and some folks don't like intruders bringing in a new sound to their genre.Maybe they should do away with genre's all together and just call it "music",hell i don't know.I'm not actually waiting for the old stuff to come back around,i have plenty of that on my shelves.Just something fresh that will make my ears smile.

Crap! .. I`m a old fart.
I can`t leave my radio on the same station to long though. I like a little bit of everything. Rap? I might do a little better with it if I understood it more, and the music wasn`t so monotonous. Throw the rap out, and I still can`t leave the radio tuned in to one station..cross over music gives the artist far more listeners I think. [more bucks for the bang] I can`t think of one person I know that didn`t like the Eagles. pop, rock, or country, singer-songwriter, folk. They had it all. [just my thought]
