We often hear of quotes from famous people, but do ordinary people ever make quotes that are original to make a point. Our friend and founder of this site, Brian, has made a number of such quotes worth noting. I invite you to make quotable quotes on this thread that makes a point. Put your thinking cap on. I'll start it off.

Eh, Well,
One I have used from time to time is: He's about as bright as a mud stained window. You may use it freely without compensation but remember, you heard it here first!

Well,
Possibly the most notable one probably from Eons ago is: A penny saved is a penny earned.

Well,
A Quote I remember from my early Navy days. There was an officer, if I remember correctly, that put out a Publication on Air Safety. I was in the Aviation Branch of the Navy. He said: It is a well known fact that a midair collision will ruin your whole day. I remember a mid air collision one time. Our Squadron had a couple of Aircraft out on a night flight. It was a clear summer night so there should have been no problem, right? Well the Aircraft had a collision. The aircraft had communications with the duty office but no communication came. A Chief Petty Officer had bailed out, hitched a ride back to the base, walked in the duty office and reported the accident.

It's funny how quotes and life stories only seem to matter if the person saying it or doing it is famous.

Like who would care about the biography of Paul McCartney, if Paul had a little group,. but then went on to be a welder.

To that I have a quote:

"Everybody has a story to tell, only a few get the tell it"

Another quote I have comes from a song title I wrote

"Every dead person I know says the same thing" a quote about not giving up.....

On his birthdays, whenever I’d tease my father about getting old, he always said, “It beats the alternative.”

Ray, a penny saved is more valuable than a penny earned because you don't have to pay tax on it. LOL

Fdemetrio You are right, everyone has a story to tell, but only stories told by famous people get listened to. LOL

Greg: healthy people are happy to be alive, some people suffering from what ever, might prefer the alternative.

Well,
One you might like Everett. God helps those that help themselves. Not sure where it came from. Another one of mine, I think. If you want to cut down a tree you have to swing the ax. You can't phone it in.

In Jersey there's a different take on that.

"Jesus loves you, everybody else thinks you're an Azzhole"

I like that one Ronnie.

Ray, I guess swinging an ax to cut down a tree is a spin off from the saying, action speaks louder than words.

Fdemetrio, no doubt some will look at Christians that way, but the bible says" the gospel is foolishness to those that are being lost, but means salvation to the believer".

Another one to think about:

When you reach the top and are #1, the only next move available to you is down. Climbing down is often harder than climbing up, especially when you stumble and fall much to quickly.

Uh, Well,
There are probably as many quotes out there as there are people.
A couple more that come to mind. HASTE MAKES WASTE. NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED. There is no right answer all the time. You just have to separate the sheep from the Goats, the Wheat from the Chaff, Fact from fiction. And, you are on your own! Or in other words, don't Zig when you need to zag.

"Democracy and freedom can never be combined without the loss of freedom and the independent mind." My eight children can quote this from their Dad (famous in his own mind).
Quotes from my Dad:
"Never S**T facing a headwind. You'll fall back in it."
"Ugly women can't help that fact but they should stay home."
"Women are like cars. Keep trading them in for newer ones."
"Most people are so stupid there's nothing to compare them to."
"I used to wish I could sing, now I wish you could."
When he got impatient, "Grandma was slow, but she was old and had a wooden leg."
"You know you're old when both your memory and your penis shrink."
Weather report: "Its colder than a witches tit in a brass bra."

I'm a better man for all this wisdom.

Bernie Laplante (from "Hero"): You remember when I said how I was gonna explain about life, buddy? Well the thing about life is, it gets weird. People are always talking ya about truth. Everybody always knows what the truth is, like it was toilet paper or somethin', and they got a supply in the closet. But what you learn, as you get older, is there ain't no truth. All there is is bullshit, pardon my vulgarity here. Layers of it. One layer of bullshit on top of another. And what you do in life like when you get older is, you pick the layer of bullshit that you prefer and that's your bullshit, so to speak.

That sounds about right. Here's a quote, created just now off the top of my head. It's dark, so you've been warned in advance if you choose to read it.

"I am far more shocked when someone is honest than when they lie. We've all been lied to by everyone all our lives with tiny bits of truth sprinkled in. Often lies are just someones attempt to make you feel better, make the world feel better, be nicer, make the world nicer but most of the time it is about power. Lies are the fuel to power. Without them, there would be little real power in this world but a lot more violence. With lies, there is far more safety, but little to no freedom. Freedom is more than most people can handle in truth. If they could handle it, they would fight much harder against the lies that created that power over you, me and them and theirs. But most people will accept the lies and the warmth from the cold hard truth that awaits them because it gives them comfort in the face of what for most, is too horrible to consider. The truth. The REAL truth, not shaded from the blistering heat that comes with it, exposing all the truth in the hearts of others IS terrifying and few would ever want to be surrounded by it 24/7. So we embrace the lies, we expand and endorse the lies and the agendas behind every one of them. And we wait, in ignorance of truth, for it all to come to an end." -Brian Austin Whitney

Perry, I had a good laugh at some of those sayings. John and Brian, a lot of truth and lies in those statements. Something like "self praise is like getting kissed by your sister, nice but nothing to crow about".

Here's an original one that fits in with what is happening a lot today. "Lies and fake news can inflict pain, penetrate the soul and destroy a life without drawing a drop of physical blood"

Um, What's that Quote again? I forgot. There are little lies, big lies, and damned lies. Somebody post the correct quote. I remember that old Ferlin Husky song. LOVE MAY KEEP THE WHOLE WORLD TURNING, BUT MONEY GREASES THE WHEEL. A real truth if I ever heard one.

Not original to him, but, when someone was being indecisive, my Dad would say:

I have a few more but if we can steal others, that's fun too.

From one of the great "BSers" of all time... Bruce Springsteen

"it's not the time in your life, it's the life in your time"

Or how bout "I went to the fights and a hockey game broke out"

"I gotta get these glasses fixed, I can see again"

Well,
One I forgot but saw it on another board. DON'T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET. And maybe, THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME. One I heard my father say one day many years ago, I'M GONNA RETIRE, AND LIVE ON MY ASSETS.

USMC Boot camp 1970. A recruit falls off an A frame on the obstacle course. A drop of about 30 ft. He bounces twice and the drill instructors rush over to him to see if he was alright. The senior drill says to him, " Pain is good, blood is Mo better!" Then 3 drills start yelling at him to get up and get moving to the next obstacle. True story.

I had a sales mgr many moons ago who was a great motivator. He used to say to me before making a sales call, "Enthusiasm begets enthusiasm!" It's true, most of the time......

When I went to college we had a very well known professor and he would say -" never quote me - If you are smart enough to quote me correctly you are smart enough to create your own quote"

Your Grandma sounds like my Grandma Perry! heh (or frankly anyone who was born pre WWII). People today have no clue how tough things were for regular people back then. Most people today wouldn't live through the "average life" many had. That said, in the USA, life for the majority of people was never better in the whole than it was in the post WWII boom. There is no greater predictor of future success than growing up in a two parent household. Back then it was the exception rather than the rule that kids would grow up with single parents, now sadly it is far more common and thus much harder for kids to get the support they need to succeed.

Those that know me well, know I can get pretty silly, and I still do at times, but not so much as I did when I was much younger. But here's a silly quote that I made up years ago that's a little goofy, yet there is some truth in the words. We've all heard the quote: "Where there's smoke, there's fire!" ...............I added a 2nd line (makes it a collab) which makes the saying a little paradoxal and comical if stated with a little dramatic conviction:

"Where there's smoke.......there's fire, and where there's fire........there's bound to be smoke!" - es

Okay, groan..............but at least I'm participating!
