Hello all! Looking for suggestions for the best inexpensive mic to record guitar with. I find direct input doesn't get the best sound and I'm currently using an omni-directional, which isn't flattering! In the past I used a cheap Apex compressor mic that worked well, but it started "hissing."
Any advice appreciated!

https://ehomerecordingstudio.com/electric-guitar-microphones/I use the 57 live and have used both the 57 and the sennheiser E609 in the studio. There are more expensive ones I use in some studio settings but those two are affordable work horses that I've found don't produce the hissing you mentioned. Hope that helps, rock on!

Not just tube pre amps - Many string players would say Crate's CA-1 is the best pre amp ever for acoustic quality and it's solid state. I have a Presonus tube pre amp and the Crate and for acoustic guitar I do prefer the Crate - but they are like chicken teeth to find. I also use the Presonus for acoustic guitar occasionally also.

Sue, Thanks for sharing the additional info on pre amps. It really is a step worth taking when you want to improve the sound quality, and who doesn't !? I'll have to find one of those chicken teeth Crate's and check it out! I'm old school tube at heart, and for so long, I've got to remind myself to keep an open mind. Hope you are doing well and getting those callouses back!

Slow but sure they are coming back. But if you go hunting for the Crate look for a CA-1P (even rarer) it has some effects on channel 2 that can be blended with channel 1. It can add a nice warm room sound to an acoustic that is real natural

Interesting, thanks for all the feedback! I'm surprised that just a Shure 57 is a possibility. Here I thought some big bucks would have to go down! I'm currently using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 unit as an interface. It's new, so I'm hoping to get away with that for now, along with a better microphone.

It's a good interface and I use it on my video editing computer if I need to add anything. To be on the safe side cut below 40 and above 15k to avoid unwanted artifacts

Well, I am still using my $6.60 Concertone Mics I bought in the Far East in the 60's when I was in the Navy. The Shure SM58 and Shure SM57 are pretty well the standards of the Industry. Both are Dynamic Mics that don't need a Pre-Amp to work. There are others that are just as good. I think it is the Electro Voice Dynamic Mics that are also good. For more Info you can go to the microphone board and read all kinds of information.

Thanks for the heads-up on the interface, Sue! And I'll check out the mic board too, hadn't seen it yet - thanks Ray!
