Haven't had much time for songs lately but I got this done today. I switched from Protools LE to Presonus (and like it) but am a little rough with it. It's a love song focused on contented bliss. Any and all sincere comments, good or bad, are sincerely appreciated. Thanks. https://www.reverbnation.com/skunkofhoustontexasBy You Martin James Lide LOC 2016 V1 I just wan-na lay by you. Martin,
A beautiful song. And wonderful recording. A great listen. Really enjoyed it.
Sounds like something Willie Nelson could have written...
Nice.

Thanks Floyd. I can't seem to escape the influence that a lifetime of exposure to Willy Nelson songs has had on me. When I play out and write, people suggest a similarity fairly frequently...but that's ok by me. Thanks for listening and the kind words.

Hi Martin, Beautiful song. I doubt there could be a more heartfelt, thoughtful composite vocal performance. I love the guitar playing as well. Pretty solo. Can't go wrong with those Tex-mexy high string thirds. Love it.. Mike

Mike Thanks for the compliments Michael. You nailed it Michael. (Smiling as I write.) The well trodden thirds were "the money" in this song. I am going to go back into the mix and pump them up so that they are more prominent during the verse. Question...Does this song lend itself to your embelishment?

I am passionate about much of the music that comes out of Texas, and that's an understatement. I'd say about 2/3rds of the music I listen to and the artists I love hail from there. There's a certain "wide-openness" and stark beauty to it, no matter how overtly different the styles are on the surface. The ballads off of Tom Russell's great "Blood and Candle Smoke" album would be a nice template for one way to produce "By You." Give a listen to "Finding You" to get an idea of one way to go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vTHExRYygIAnd "Guadalupe": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xDQyLKaQO0&index=10&list=PLjqzGcs5b5MWOYjCozZCt4tSFsp7dVUgoWith Guadalupe," the combination of those high-string thirds on the acoustic guitar with the accordion just tear my heart apart. I think "By You" is leaning somewhere in between these two productions..and I could give you something like that, from the heart, as that "sound" and production style is very close to my heart. My main thing is to be receptive to your ideas, and try to bring them to life, but I think, judging from your demo here, that we are thinking along similar lines.. Mike

What a lovely write, vocal and arrangement.
"Life has many troubles There's lots of heavy sighs but when lay down by you they all just float on by Doesn't matter where we are Doesn't matter why"
That is beautiful. Janice and I looked at each other and said "yeah!"
"It's a love song focused on contented bliss"
You most assuredly succeeded!
Thanks for sharing this.

PS "Rough" is quite relative. It sounds really good.

Nice playing and singing (your vocal phrasing reminds me a bit of our Mackie H here for some reason). Good tune and a mighty fine listen.

Appreciate it Kevin. I think that Mackie and I may be wrapped around the phrasing of songs that we heard when we were young. One of those things that you do without realizing that you do it.

Hi again, Martin:
I heard "By You" over at the Ramp and the guitar middle break caught my ear. I didn't remember it from the song posted here and had to come back and verify it. Sure 'nuff... both the same!
Wouldn't you love to hear "Willie" take a crack at this one? Not that he could do it one bit better... sometimes a little fame can make the cash register jingle a little more. Funny how he keeps on strumming that old crappy looking guitar and making it sound like a million dollars.
Anyway... "By You" sounds great on both sites and I really enjoy hearing it. ----Dave

Thanks as always Dave. Your comments and encouragement are always appreciated. I'd love to hear Willie sing the song but if the decision were mine to make, I'd lower it a half step and ask George Strait to sing it. I read that he goes through 4,000 songs to come with an album list so the chances of that happening are neglible to zero...even if I got the song in front of him. I heard he retired to....but I bet he doesn't stay retired.

Hey Martin,
Beautiful song. I especially like the verse melody. At first I thought the chorus needed more "lift" but then after hearing it the 2nd time, it really has kind of an opposite yet reflective feel rather than a hook lift, which works here. I would like to see if you further production however to give the chorus a little more identity either with music arrangement or harmony to give it slightly more distinction from the verse transition.
This is a beautiful write, and very heartfelt for sure--nice work!

Thanks Eddie.
I agree with you about lifting the chorus. I tried some things to lift it when I did the GV but I couldn't get anything to sound right and ended up staying with a "laid back" chorus that doesn't differentiate itself from the verse very much.
In the next few weeks Michael Zaneski is going to add instrumentation and production to the song and I'm hopeful that will break the chorus out a little more.
Appreciate you for listening.
Martin

Beautiful write, performance and recording. A really wonderful vocal and love the guitar playing. Sweet, simple and beautiful, just as it should be. Congrats.!
Dave
P.S. I like is. Doesn't need more production imo. Intimate ... just as it should be.

Martin,
No doubt Michael will have some good ideas for you.....and it's not a lifting chorus melody, so opt for production enhancement. Great performance.

Michael Zaneski reworked my tracks for this song. It's the best non studio recording that I've ever been able to work up out of my home. Many thanks Michael. He cleaned up and toned the vocals sweetened the guitar tone added backing vocals (I particularly liked the White Album-ish stuff on the final chorus and verse. Balanced everything I told him that I wanted to sit with it for a while before I decide what else to do but I'm not sure that anything else should be added. Opinions and comments welcome https://www.reverbnation.com/skunkofhoustontexas?profile_view_source=header_icon_nav

Morning, Martin:
Forgive my tardiness. I just listened to Zaneski's embellishments to "By You" and enjoyed every minute. I noticed the artwork and your comment "softened" and suspect it will be the cover or artwork that will accompany the song as it winds it's way through the music world.
It is such a good song and I wish you all the very best with it.
Regards, ----Dave

Regards, ----Dave It's really nice of you to say that Dave. Thanks. As far as the music world...there's no denying that I would love for some artist to say that they are interested in the song. But I give that no chance of occurring. Nevertheless writing the songs and working up the art is enjoyable in and of itself. So my goal is to enjoy it...and never completely lose hope. Always appreciative, Martin

Martin,

steady-eddie. Thanks for giving a second listen Eddie. Ultimately I agreed with you and decided to keep it clean and simple. Michael did a real nice job of balancing the parts and adding depth and vocals. After trying other instrumentation it seemed the song was more personal without them...as you had suggested.
