I used to play at a writers' night where there was a band of excellent studio musicians.
Bring your Nashville Numbers charts and they would absolutely kill it....
The First Take Band. The leader was a guy named Mike Dunbar.
It all slips into the void, I guess...

This song came from that time... it was an education...

HONKY TONK OF HIGHER LEARNING

just because i don't have a fancy diploma
just because i never went to college
doesn't mean i can't make my way in this world
i've gained the necessary knowledge
me and the boys still worry about
the grades we might be earning
hanging out here in the hallowed halls
of the honky tonk of higher learning

floyd's learning how it feels to flunk out
with phyliss over by the jukebox
hannah's teaching harry how she breaks hearts
here in this school of hard knocks
rachel's reading randy the rules of rejection
it seldom seems to concern him
he's still hanging out here in the hallowed halls
of the honky tonk of higher learning

this is where we learn the real lessons of life
keep the midnight oil burning
sink or swim get your studies in
the honky tonk of higher learning

saturday nights it's social studies
your history comes back to haunt you
you think you've got some chemistry going with the waitress
statistics say she won't want you
do a little math, figure up your tab
the wheels of knowledge just keep turning
hanging out here in the hallowed halls
of the honky tonk of higher learning

we're continuing our education
keep those neon beer signs burning
hanging out here in the hallowed halls
of the honky tonk of higher learning

ain't never graduating from these hallowed halls
the honky tonk of higher learning

©steve vincent and floyd jane

Have a beer.
Get an education.

Hangin' out in the Hallowed Halls of the Honky Tonk of higher learning. Now that is a memorable line, Mr. Jane and Mr. Vincent. As always, your delivery and production makes the audience want to get out on that dance floor or at least tap time as another beer is poured. Fun song and worthy of several more listens.

Thanks for sharing, ----Dave

Floyd, Now that's a song that fits right into the sweet spot at any honky tonk bar where boogie woogie boys and girls gather on Friday and Saturday nights. It belongs on jukeboxes and set lists of every roadhouse bar band in America. Seriously. It's not easy to write good honky tonk lyrics. But these jump out of the speakers like a Chuck Berry song. My compliments.

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Thanks, Dave... Steve and I were sitting in Douglas Corner Café, listening and talking about "the scene" and he said it was like a honky tonk of higher learning... We knew there was a song there! I wrote this the next morning... (he had written the title on a napkin and handed it to me).

I'd sit in a honky tonk all night and try to tolerate the smoke and stale beer aromas if I could come out and write a song half this good. This one needs a jukebox number assigned to it.

In that proverbial perfect world Brooks and Dunn would have made you a lot of money with this one!

Too much fun.

Among others, Alan Jackson springs to mind.

Great buzz of a dance song and a great title. Oh, and of course, great production.

What's not to like on this one? Nothing springs to mind.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

Hey Floyd,

I really enjoyed this "kick-ass" Country-Rock song, maybe actually a little more early rock-n-roll, whatever........dynamite piano!

steady-eddie.

Hi Floyd,

I was thinking that the hook was gonna miss since drinking isn't usually associated with getting "high" like smoking pot is--then I listened and read, and you made the "higher learning" about the stuff you can (*clears throat*)learn by hanging out with the same group of folks, night after night, and so it's perfect. Kind of like little Tom T Hall-ish character studies, mixed with Roger Miller's wit. Your use of "chemistry" was my favorite.

That's John Jarvis on piano? I haven't used him yet. I remember when I worked at Tower Records/Nashville--he was the 'go-to' guy on so many recordings and demos, even put out some great records on the long dead MCA "Master" series, if I be recollecting correctly. I'd love to have a crazy honky-tonk piano come in late, on a slow, dark, somber ballad, just for fun..lol..

As usual, stellar work.. smile

Mike

Kind of like little Tom T Hall-ish character studies, mixed with Roger Miller's wit. Your use of "chemistry" was my favorite.

That's John Jarvis on piano? I haven't used him yet. I remember when I worked at Tower Records/Nashville--he was the 'go-to' guy on so many recordings and demos, even put out some great records on the long dead MCA "Master" series, if I be recollecting correctly. I'd love to have a crazy honky-tonk piano come in late, on a slow, dark, somber ballad, just for fun..lol..

As usual, stellar work.. smile

Mike - I always enjoy your reviews. Your musical knowledge astounds me. Mentions of Tom T. Hall AND Roger Miller could do nothing but make me smile (Miller, I think, is one of the most underrated songwriters ever).

The piano tracks are actually Kevin McKendree - newer New Orleans Boogie tracks (using the midiSuperTrack version and rendered using 4Front TruePiano - a lot more control of the sound that way). I have used the Jarvis honky tonk tracks a lot in the past - they are awesome, too...

Thanks, once again for the nice review....
