What have we got to lose? Here's a guitar and vocal demo of one that came to me while I was on my morning walk one day. © Dan Sullivan 2016 A stroll in the park A kiss in the dark What have we got to lose? A car going past Two hearts beating fast What have we got to lose? The greatest of all Empires fall Nothing lasts forever If a moment in time is all that we find Why don’t we spend it together A pink Beaujolais A sidewalk cafe What have we got to lose? A soft summer breeze Rustling leaves What have we got to lose? After all we’ve been through what’s left to lose? What more can tomorrow bring? There’s a full moon tonight shining so bright The world’s hanging by a string A stroll in the park A kiss in the dark What have we got to lose? A car going past Two hearts beating fast What have we got to lose?

This is really a fine song, Dan. Very relaxing to listen to. I can hear how a potential production would sound on it but it stands just fine as an acoustic/vocal. Really good stuff, Pal.

Little Stevie, Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. It's a simple song, but I'm happy you could hear a fuller production in the theater of your imagination.

Thanks, Mike. The song came together quickly, including the line you liked. I guess the best songs are the easiest to write.

I like this one! The only thing that jumped out at me was this line "The greatest of all Empires fall". Seems a bit melodramatic compared to the up close and personal nature of the rest of the song.

What have we got to lose? Here's a guitar and vocal demo of one that came to me while I was on my morning walk one day. © Dan Sullivan 2016 A stroll in the park A kiss in the dark What have we got to lose? A car going past Two hearts beating fast What have we got to lose? The greatest of all Empires fall - as Colin mentioned this is a little bit "over the top" but I suppose it could work. I feel that maybe the language is mostly straight forward, so this sounds a little bit different from the way this guy is normally talking..maybe find a way of saying the same thing but more in this guy's voice?Nothing lasts forever If a moment in time is all that we find Why don’t we spend it together A pink Beaujolais - -I had to look this one up. A sidewalk cafe What have we got to lose? A soft summer breeze Rustling leaves What have we got to lose? After all we’ve been through what’s left to lose? - I feel that the tag of what have we got to lose here is too much. I like the hook a lot, but feel this one extra time pushes it to the "too much" category. jmho. What more can tomorrow bring? There’s a full moon tonight shining so bright The world’s hanging by a string A stroll in the park A kiss in the dark What have we got to lose? A car going past Two hearts beating fast What have we got to lose? Very nicely done. I just added a couple of suggestions, keep or sweep... Kimberly

Colin, Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. I didn't put any thought into the line "the greatest of all Empires fall." It was just a line that came into my head that I liked. Thinking about it now, I guess I was trying to reinforce the next line - "Nothing lasts forever." Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts on that line. It would be a boring world if we all looked at things the same way.

Nicely done Dan. It's the ultimate, who knows or cares what tomorrow may bring, love song. Also loved the no fuss production and your signature vocal.

Kimberly, Thank you for taking the time to listen, the kind words and the thoughtful suggestions. You're on the same page as Colin regarding the line about Empires falling. I guess I don't dissect the lyrics as I'm writing. I just write 'em based on what sounds good to me, without much thought about how they might be perceived - which will be different for every listener anyway. But like anyone else, sometimes after a song is finished I go back and replace a word or phrase with something I think is better.

Dan, nice writeI could hear this done as a simple acoustic song. Just acoustic guitar to compliment this pretty melody and lyric.

Mr. Nelson, Thank you for the always kind words. I threw this one together without the "backing band," so I'm happy the song itself is garnering praise. I hope to hear a CD release soon from the Bard of Baltimore. Keep up the good work.

Hey Dan,
Sweet Song! I liked a couple of Kim's sugs. I thought with the many expressions, which in "my mind" are things that we indeed do have to lose.....thus at the song's end, I might experiment with saying something to that effect such as:
So yes, we have a lot to lose......
In this manner, IMO, it gives the "expressive verse structure" a summarizing, yet clever closing realization that the small things in life are truly beautiful. (Just an idea -- use of lose)
steady-eddie.

Eddie, Thanks for listening to the song and the thoughtful suggestion. I'm not sure it's a good idea to shift gears and veer away from the hook of the song at the end. It might be a bit jarring to answer what is essentially a rhetorical question at the end of the song.

Hi Dan, You and Prine.. You're the only guys I know that can "clear the table" and write a love song that kills beautifully with the simplest and most earnest of approaches--like the first love song ever written, the first love song ever sung, like real love is truly happening, and like you are honestly meaning what you're singing.. Just you and Prine and that's about it.. Beautiful composition and nice performance. Mike
