Louis, Mike did you right on this Christian Rock song. It's a well-written and performed song. I enjoyed it. Especially the ending bit of harmony. Well done, gentlemen.

Pleasing and sincere sounding song. Nice song.
2 suggestions
...might get an emotional lift from a third voice in the harmonies.
...In the verses right before the choruses the lead vocalist drops down into the low end of his register. Imo...you are singing that too smooth and it's just starts to drag slightly. Might use some inflections in your articulation to punch up the vocal line just a little right there.

Congratulations Louis... on a very broad song-front. Wonderful adaptation lyrically and your decision to have Mike do the demo was so wise. Finally, I was blown away at his always flawless musicality and fantastic vocals. The harmonized sections were frosting on the cake. Kudos to both of you... and I suspect the "Man Upstairs" is smiling. ----Dave

Man, that's nice. I particularly love the first line of the chorus. Ending is cool too - didn't know Mike could hit those high notes.

Thanks Dan! Since the chorus repeats twice at the end, I felt like I should throw in a couple choice ad libs and make the ending harmony thicker than the rest; I'm glad you second that decision. Hi Martin, and thanks! I think a third harmony would work in some kinds of music, but here focusing on the 7th scale step for those harmonies would make it too "progressive folk-ish" like CSN & Y. The other choice would be double the melody up an octave, which might work if I lowered the entire song a third--but then the new problem would be that the lead vocal would have much less power. As to your opinion that the lead vocal is making the song drag because I am singing it too smoothly in those few seconds before the chorus, I am actually adding vibrato, a kind of inflection, to the end of that lowest word "soul," but not throwing junk into my voice, and I easily enough could have, to thicken it up, but my intention was in fact to be smooth there and not to deviate too much from Louis' rough demo, cuz I saw and still see no cause to (the word "soul" in this context just begs for smoothness, to me!), but I'm sorry singing those few seconds the way I do makes the song drag for you there. Thanks Vic. I saw an opportunity to honor my love of those early Glen Campbell records by using a baritone lead guitar in the spaces between the lead vocals, and I'm happy knowing you enjoyed the arrangement and all. It all fell into place easily cuz Louis wrote a very beautiful piece of music, and he tweaked a word here and there to make the Psalm sing better. Anyway, thanks again! Thanks Ricki. I just yelled "thank you!" thanking the writers too--and through a wormhole and just hope the writers heard. Thanks, Dave! I don't know if my musicality is flawless, but I appreciate those very kind words. It's hard to miss when presented with such a beautiful song. Thanks Mike! Louis definitely created a hopeful and spirited tone in his setting. I'm glad to have been able to honor that! Hi Scott, and thanks! The trick to high notes, at least for me, is to approach them Brazilian style--on the soft side first, and then modulate the volume from the chest--and to drink a gulp of really hot water before every take, so that that the larynx is clear of..debris..ha..you know what I mean..most of the time I just go falsetto and don't bother, lol..thanks again! Thanks Dave! Louis writes inspired music, and that makes everything come easy. Thanks again, all. Mike

Cool Christian Rock song. Solid song construction and production. I REALLY liked the harmonies.
Mike, I felt that the kick drum was a bit heavy on the low end with respect to the bass line, and that the snare could come forward more at times. Minor nits to be sure because the overall production quality is excellent.
Great job!
Peace, TC

Peace, TC Thanks TC! I'll listen again through my setup paying close attention to kick and snare. Those guys didn't stick out in a bad way through all the mixing, but I wasn't paying particular attention to them, though. Thanks again. Mike

This is really beautiful. Every aspect of it really. The melody is very gentle and Mike’s production and vocal with those harmonies are just beautiful. So uplifting. I shall sleep well tonight! Kristi

Wonderful collab guys. A lovely write Louis and another stunner of a performance and production, mike. Now I don't get into discussions about music and production, for obvious reasons but I was reading through the comments and some one mentioned that you should add a third voice to the harmonies, then you explain why you didn't but to my ears there seems to be 3. The lead and one left and one right. Please forgive my ignorance and if you will, explain what you're speaking of and what I'm missing in this case. thx a bunch BTW Like Ricki I thought the high registered vocal at the end was very cool.

Hi Nelson,
Thanks a bunch for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Your right. What both Martin and I were talking about was (the possibility)of four part harmony by adding a fourth overall voice. Somehow we had separated the "lead vocals" from our talk and were talking strictly about the other voices--the harmony vocals, of which there are two in the piece, with a third one that Martin was proposing. So that's all, just different ways of talking about the same thing.
Thanks again!
Mike

Guys!
This all works so well...Very eaglesy spread out guitar soundstage perfectly supports the lush vocals which then morph from Pure Prairie League into the Beachboys for the finale...very earwormy!
