New song I've been working on. Let me know what you think! Fear The Time Lyrics: Fear the time, when no man will stand up Give in to the masters of the field All I can do is ramble my way on Seems the world has chosen its few Fear the time when the cannonballs won't fly When the words of many aren't met by the few See the hunger in their eyes What stands before them is sure to lose So come with your bones Come fast and come strong, bring your fire Come with your hands come clean of the trance you've acquired Carry your weight Leave your masters, leave your hate Know they lie to you Know where you stand Know from pain comes a man Know what to die for Know what to die for

Hi Nick,
Another winning song. This time I wished that, like Joe Boyd did Nick Drake, you'd close mic your vocals so as to have more control over where you place them in the mix. Boyd actually used two mics, one just few inches from Drake's mouth and another one placed far away, usually near a wall, for natural ambiance. But these days we all have software reverb, so that second mic is not necessary.
You very masterfully add that looming strings/horns drone that is just perfect, but that dangerous sound isn't matched with more vocal intensity, and to me, the song really is begging for that.
It's a beauty of a song, though. I love it anyway, just think the ambient vocal sound doesn't fit as well in this one. At least not all the way through.
Mike

You have a great deal of talent. Here's wishing you success and happiness in your life... and with your music. I listened to both of your songs at the link you shared with us. Mike has made some interesting suggestions and I hope you will experiment with his ideas. He knows what he is speaking about.
All the best,
----Dave

This could well be one of best songs I've heard for a long time. My only nit is like the others have said is that a song of this quality needs to be to recorded better to really make it shine. That said it's still bloody great so well done.
Are you singing and playing at the same ? and did you only use one mic in the room. Man I love this tune like a hell of a lot.
Just been listening to Over the Hill and that again is a painfully beautiful tune. There's definitely a lot of Drake in what you do but with a really nice take on the style.
Thanks for sharing and keep them coming :-)

Thanks Andy! Yea I'm singing and playing at the same time. I only have one very cheap mic, so recording is a bit of an issue for me. I'll try and work on it in the next one though

Awesome vibe to this tune! I really like the guitar parts.
I felt that the vocals needed to come foward in the mix (more compression too so the softly sung words don't get lost). While you did convey emotion, I felt that the vocal intensity could have been stronger.
Great tune, and pretty good performance.
Peace, TC

Hi Nick, I really like your style and voice (wish I could hear it better). I just wish your lyrics were a little more transparent. I'm into listener interpretation and poetic and mystical imagery but I get frustrated if I don't get it right away. Just taking a stab at this, is it a wake up call to the apathetic masses who, by their inaction, are allowing a few to come to too much power? Am I close? If so, then this makes no sense to me. "Fear the time when the cannonballs won't fly" Wouldn't I be more fearful if they do start to fly? I read the end as a sort of pacifist call to arms and if so, "know what to die for" is a very powerful message. Let me know if I'm even in the ball park. Ricki

Hey Ricki, Thank you for the listen! You are definitely on the right track with your interpretation. The line "Fear the time when the cannonballs won't fly" refers to when the common man will no longer stand his ground. Sorry for any frustration, I know my writing style can be somewhat convoluted Nick

Listened to this last night and again today. Without reading the other comments, I immediately heard the Nick Drake influence. I became a huge fan of Nick Drake in later life and I have never heard someone who sounded remotely close to his style music until now. Excellent playing, singing and write. Just spectacular.
