This is an oldie from back in the days of Shayne Vaughn's The Write Stuff site. It needs a female vocalist but I've been told that I carried it off okay, phrasing wise. Hope you enjoy. I'm currently revisiting some of my humorous material with the goal of performing them live. If I ever posted this at JPF, it was long ago in a Galaxy far, far away. The Slow Slow Rise of Homemade Bread ©2001 Steven M. Biederman http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=6811852 Mornin’, hon, I’m baking more homemade bread today It looks like the dawning of a most unusual day………. Joanie called to imply what she won't come out and say Young Robert’s been fired – seems someone told his boss he was gay Now you and your buddies finally have it your way Did I mention that I’m baking more homemade bread….. today? Please don’t use that cup, your coffee mug’s over here Eggs over easy, just the way you like ‘em, dear……….. Joanie stopped short of naming any names out of fear Seems someone close - leaked the rumour of him being queer Prob’ly got him a raise and a few rounds of beer Try not to stomp, the bread is soooo sensitive…….. dear The slower the rise – the better the bread Time enough to clear your head Time enough to make your bed It’s the slow…slow… rise Of homemade bread Oh look there’s a robin, it looks like spring’s here to stay I was starting to worry the blue jays scared them all away……….. That reminds of something I was hoping I would not have to say you can tell everybody while it’s true young Robert may have strayed He didn’t go far and that boy’s certainly not gay Did I mention that I’m baking more homemade bread……..today?

What a cool way to start the morning with a cup of joe and, yep, Janice's homemade bread!
Fun listen indeed.

Hey, Steve:
Pretty darn original.. and I agree... it needs a female vocal but you pulled it off with style. An interesting "write" and your phrasing was good. Reminds me of TV back in the 50's and 60's. You know, Harvey Korman and what's her name... LOL!
Enjoyed. ---Dave

Stevie, this reminds me of British musical farce ala Benny Hill. I enjoyed the cloying double entendres and the conversational singing. That's not easy to pull off. The ending was great. I can see the sly smile on the Baker's face as she casually mentioned there would be more bread in the oven today.

This is great! It lulls one with the music then sneaks in the backdoor with those sly lyrics. Love that slow, slow rise. Of home made bread, I mean... Ricki

Mr. Biederman
Did'cha ever consider doing a heavy medal version of this song, and maybe instead of homemade bread, she could be making homemade pipe bombs to go blow up the company that fired Young Robert... I think it would have a much wider appeal that way, any way thats what I hear when I play this one!!
Cheers Paul

I remember this one from way back then Stevie...I liked it then and it stands the test of time..got great reviews back then as well as I recall...as I recall, the consensus was that this had such neat way of almost trivializing the bombshell by emphasizing the common day to day element of conversation around it.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Cheers Paul Hey little feller. No, a pipe bomb would be too close to home for the author. Young Robert thanks you and sends his love though. Stevie

Hi Stevie,
I love this, it's a really cool lyric and the music is my favorite kind of baroque pop; sounding like something by "The Divine Comedy" --my favorite band.
I love songs that are snippets of conversation. This reminds me of Raymond Carver, actually, like his short stories. Little moments of domestic unease. Love it.

This is HILARIOUS! Cracked me right up! I don't think it needs a female vocal...you captured her perfectly -- lol!
