A relative passed away today after a hard fought battle with cancer. Though his body was wracked with pain he asked his son in law to take him to the town centre monument of remembrance for the brave souls who gave their lives for their country so that he could place a red poppy there.
He insisted on standing from his wheel chair to salute the fallen servicemen being an army veteran himself.
His name was Ronald chambers, unknown and probably forgotten apart from those who knew and loved him

Thanks for sharing this poignant story. It rings a bell in my hall of memories in honor of my dad who endured years of agony attempting to find a cure for melanoma carcenoma. Near the end, he was practically a skeleton. My mother felt it was best that my brother and I not see him in such a state.
If we can find cures for cancer (in all it's varying forms) and a cure (or preventative measure) for alzheimer's... we will have climbed the Mount Everest of the medical world.
Thanks for sharing. I salute Ronald Chambers for his courage, patriotism and endurance of excruciating pain.

Perhaps one day someone will come up with a cure for cancer until then it's the sad episodes of watching loved ones fade day by day as in both cases here.

As a disabled Vietnam War Vet, I am humbled by the actions of your relative. He is the one deserving of a salute. It's so easy to forget those who served when we have so many other things to tend to in our lives. The fact he was willing to risk standing to offer a salute when he was close to his last day says a lot for him.
As soon as I'm finished with this, I'll stand and give a salute to Ronald Chambers for his service and his respect for the others who served.
