I struggled to get this done for 50/90, the easier tunes are always the hardest!

This is the VERY FIRST song I had ever recorded on my Tascam DP-008EX

I had never mixed anything before.

Also, this is the FIRST TIME I had ever done a mandolin track, so like it or hate it, but I'm pretty excited about it!!

Meant as a campfire, family fun type of song and TRUE STORY, I was picking blueberries in my garden and looked down and there
was a snake looking up at me....and now my exciting experience is a song!

Blueberry Snake on SoundClick

Blueberry Snake
by Tammy
© 2014

On the green, green hill at the edge of town
the people come from miles around
they'll walk all day to get to the top
for a taste of the blueberry crop

the biggest, best tastiest fruit
they want buckets of blue loot
but be careful for goodness sake
don't disturb the blueberry snake!

chorus
Blueberry Snake, Blueberry Snake
he's waiting and watching every step you make
don't eat too many
and mind what you take
and don't tread on the Blueberry Snake

The green, green patch is where he makes his home
he wants the berries for his own
better hurry and fill up your pail
and don't be steppin on his tail

He won't coil, he won't strike
if you try real hard to act polite
let him slither to his sunny place
and don't disturb the blueberry snake

chorus
Blueberry Snake, Blueberry Snake
he's waiting and watching every step you make
don't eat too many
and mind what you take
and don't tread on the Blueberry Snake

tag
In the green, green grass at the hill's peak
the blueberry snake is sound asleep

Tammy.
Once again your natural vocal and love of nature shines through in this.
You make the snake sound loveable, as I'm sure he is on a good day.
I would turn the volume down just half a tad on the guitar.

Hi Tammy!

Your writing is always so creative and nature oriented. Like Vic said, you make the snake almost likeable! And yeah, the guitar is just a tad too loud.

Loved your vocal and the lyric ... your strongest points. So nice to hear you again!

Hey TamsNumber4, it's a fun catchy song. One thing I discovered about the mandolin is that it has to be mixed just right so the "tinkle" isn't overpowering. Your "tinkle" sounds fine and fits in good with the guitar.

Very good and original song. Reminds me of my younger days in TN. There was this one snake that lived near the shed, and we were always on the lookout for it. Good work!

Very nice. Janice and I coexist with snakes on our homestead...so we much enjoyed your take on encountering one. I'd put your vocal a little more out front. You have a good voice and it oughta be prominently featured IMO. Of course I'm frequently told that I put Janice's out a bit too much on my productions. smile

Tammy, this has the feel of authentic folk music, the kind the mountain folk of Kentucky and Tennessee would have written and sang back in the 20s and 30s and even earlier. The song would have served as both entertainment and a warning to the children and careless adults in the days before television or even radio. You've done a real nice job capturing the feel and sound of that type of song.

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Hi Tammy,

How original and sweet as can be! It sounds great!
That's some picture too -- is that your photo of the snake? If so, I hope that makes it into your photo book this year!

Michael,

Thanks for the visit...I am working on getting some mando in more of my songs, glad it comes over well, this is the first time I ever played it for a recording!

I never had a snake in the blueberries...I now approach them VERY carefully!!

"the Mr. Mac alternative link"......sounds like a band name from the early 70's.:)

As per usual, your vocal is strong, and the fact you're expanding your musical tool kit with different instruments is a great thing. My nits would only be the strumming pattern is a tad stilted and the chorus feels like another verse to me......and those two things are an easy fix, with a little more time and attention. There really is not much else I could offer in the way of suggestion, you're growing in leaps and bounds.......good work. smile

I remember picking blueberries once and being startled by a snake, too. I like how you made this experience into an enjoyable story, and the "blueberry snake" warnings are sung in such a soothing way.

Having the vocal volume up a little (or the background instrumentation down) would make it easier to catch all the words when listening, but I think the overall feel of the song is great!

Tammy this is really well done. If that snake looked anything like that picture you have on the soundclick then I am thinking I would be getting my blueberry fix at the Walmart from now on....LOL..that is one scary snake.

I liked this and you are doing so well with your playing skills too. I am so proud of you

Hi Tammy,

What a cute song, but also a good one! Nice concept here--I think this song is "beggin" for a Bluegrass ensemble!

steady-eddie.
