I found a box of my old cassettes, some going back to the 1970s. I obviously want to digitize them, but all I have to play them back on is an old Radio Shack cassette desk. I applied power and it still works...but it is FILTHY! I have no cleaning fluid to clean the heads. What else can I use? Here are some options I have around the house: Visine, Bactine, Lysol, Windex, aloe vera, wine...and uh, John Varvatos cologne.
I'll take any and all advice on doing this transfer!

Go to Radio Shack and get an aerosol can of electronics cleaner. It cleans and evaporates without shorting out the electronics.

Humm, For the outside you can use Windex or a mild solution of soap and water, applied with a paper towell or even a wash rag or other such item. For the tape track Isopropel Achaol (mispelled) including the heads. If you want to open it up you can also clean any belts by putting it in play and using Q Tips to clean the belt(s).
A note. You might find your old tapes have printed thru and sound from the adjcent tape will also play. Sounding garbled. Good luck!

Colin, Ray. thanks for the tips. I should buy some canned air anyway to clean my computer, keyboard, etc. For the cassette deck I made do with Pine-Sol. Now my heads smell lemony fresh. Unfortunately, the drive post on the right, supposedly for the take up side, is turning clockwise instead of counter-clockwise....luckily I caught it before tape got eaten. I might have used a wall wart with the wrong polarity, that's all I can think of.

Possibly a loose belt - that's the most common problem with old players. You need to be very careful about spraying anything on the rubber pinch roller on the right as they can be attacked by many cleaning chemicals and turn to goo. You also need to make sure that whatever you leave completely evaporates and doesn't leave any residue. I'd say the best thing to do would be to buy some Isopropyl Alcohol from a mail order specialist - in the UK I'd suggest Studiospares or CPC but I'm not sure who the equivalents are in the US.
